Poplar Springs Shootout provides local teams a valuable tune-up
Each team entered with its own goals, from rebuilding rosters to preparing for championship runs.
For Holmes County, last season's Class 1A state runners-up, the mission is clear, finish what they started.
'I want people to say this is the team to beat this year,' rising sophomore Jacee Bowers said. 'It's a privilege. People walk in the gym and know this is the team to beat, that feels good.
'We're coming in hard, showing up every day,' rising senior Ava Jones said. 'As seniors, it's exciting. We're ready to take on the role, and our goal is to get to that last game of the season and win it all.'
The Arnold Lady Marlins celebrated a key return as rising senior Abby Long stepped back onto the court following a nine-month recovery from a torn ACL.
'Abby's worked really hard at rehab, and she's going to be a big part of our team,' Arnold Head Coach David Pleat said. 'It takes a lot of courage and commitment to come back from an ACL injury. You really admire them for that.'
Meanwhile, the Mosley Dolphins entered the tournament with just one senior, giving younger players an early opportunity to embrace leadership roles.
'Tournaments like this help us build as a team,' rising sophomore Faith Alvarado said. 'We learn how to play together and learn each other on the court. It's been really good all around.'
The host team, the Poplar Springs Lady Atomics, used the event to introduce their new head coach, JJ Price.
'I officially start July 1, but with the camp and this tournament going on, I've basically been here since the last week of May,' Price said. 'It's been a great chance to get to know the girls and start preparing.'
Holmes County finished the tournament undefeated at 7-0. First-year head coach Brandon French said they aren't slowing down anytime soon.
'We're going to keep playing,' French said. 'A lot of these young guys didn't get a ton of game experience last year, so we're getting in as many games as we can this summer. We're only a few weeks in, but everybody's stepping into their roles really well.'
Whether rebuilding or returning with veteran talent, every team left Poplar Springs with more experience, and a better understanding of what it takes to win.
The three-day event began on Monday, continued Tuesday, and wrapped up on Thursday evening.

What is the biggest remaining position battle for the Minnesota Vikings?
The Vikings have several positions where the water is murky, and they are trying to decipher what is going to happen with it. One of the positions is cornerback, where the team has some new faces thanks to some players getting healthy and others being signed. They brought in Jeff Okudah and Isaiah Rodgers in free agency. They get Mekhi Blackmon back from injury, and with those pieces, they believe their secondary should be in good shape. However, for those on the outside looking in, the position remains one that needs to be solved with all those pieces playing a part. Bleacher Report's Moe Moton broke down each team's biggest positional battle. The Vikings discussed the ongoing CB2 battle. He writes, "Based on preseason Week 1 usage and snap count, the Minnesota Vikings had a clear pecking order for the No. 2 and 3 cornerback spots. Rodgers and Okudah took the field with some starters, and Blackmon saw extended time with most of the backups. . .Coming off a torn ACL, Blackmon may need time to remind everyone of the player who showed promise in the Vikings' secondary two years ago. For now, you can pencil in Rodgers and Okudah at cornerback alongside Byron Murphy Jr." The Vikings' secondary is likely to be an issue early in the season until they find their cohesion. Once they do, and aleader from this group emerges, they should be in good shape. Thankfully, Brian Flores remains their defensive coordinator so his pressure and scheme will make up for a lot of their shortcomings.

Tottenham dealt major injury blow as James Maddison worst fears realised
Tottenham have been dealt a major blow after scans confirmed James Maddison has suffered a serious knee injury. Maddison ruptured his ACL in last week's pre-season friendly against Newcastle and Spurs have confirmed the midfielder will undergo surgery . Spurs have not put a timeframe on how long Maddison will be out but he is set for a long spell on the sidelines, in a huge setback for Spurs ahead of the new season. A Spurs statement read: We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. 'The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.' Thomas Frank was already short of creative players, with Dejan Kulusevski out for the start of the season and after Spurs missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White. Maddison's injury could force Spurs into the transfer market. The 28-year-old pulled up just minutes after coming on against Newcastle and collapsed to the pitch with his head in his hands. He is now expected the miss the majority of the forthcoming season. Maddison scored 12 goals in 45 appearances for Spurs last season. His injury also surely ends any hopes he had of forcing his way back into the England squad for the World Cup.
