Exeter City set for £5m transfer windfall

BBC News02-04-2025
Exeter City say the club will earn more than £5m from recent transfers. The Grecians' accounts to the end of June 2024 show they made more than £5m from sales from July last year onwards. Former Exeter academy player Jay Stansfield's move from Fulham to Birmingham City in the summer of 2024 for reportedly £15m with possible add-ons saw the Grecians benefit thanks to a sell-on clause.City also sold striker Millenic Alli for a fee understood to be worth £1.5m in January, while Will Aimson also moved to Wigan for an undisclosed fee in July 2024.City say the funds are payable "over a number of years rather than being received upfront and allow the club to plan investment in the first team, academy and capital projects whilst supporting the day-to-day running of the business"."The manager has been able to recruit a number of players to replace those leaving with both loans and permanent transfers," City added in their annual report."The board will continue to do all it can to provide the manager with the resources to support the ambition of the club whilst not compromising the sustainability of the business."Stansfield's move is the latest in a long line of Exeter City academy players who have been sold for big fees in recent years. The club has earned more than £5m from England striker Ollie Watkins' moves to Brentford and Aston Villa, while Ethan Ampadu, Matt Grimes and Joel Randell have all commended fees in excess of £1m.
The fan-owned club's annual accounts show a pre-tax profit of £182,000 for the year ending 30 June 2024.The Grecians were profitable thanks to £3.1m in transfer income during the 2023-24 season after the sale of striker Sam Nombe to Rotherham United for what the club described at the time as a "record fee".City also made around £1m from a sell-on clause from former academy player Ampadu's £7m move from Chelsea to Leeds United. In addition, the club earned compensation for Archie Collins after he left for Peterborough United and agreed a compensation fee with Swansea City for Josh Key's 2023 move after a tribunal. The figures come as Exeter's turnover increased by £725,000 on the previous year although pre-tax profits dropped by £130,000 over the 12 months as the club's wages bill rose by £1.1m.

MLB roundup: Vinnie Pasquantino homer lifts Royals past Rangers

August 22 - Vinnie Pasquantino's home run in the fifth inning broke a tie and helped the Kansas City Royals take a 6-4 win Thursday to clinch the four-game set against the visiting Texas Rangers. Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez led the Royals with two hits apiece. Five Kansas City relievers combined to throw 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief work, with Angel Zerpa (5-1) recording the win. Starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Royals, who are 8-2 in their past 10 games. Corey Seager led the Rangers with three hits and a first-inning double that wound up being the team's only extra-base hit of the game. Starter Patrick Corbin was tagged for four runs over 3 2/3 innings, but Jacob Webb (4-4) took the loss after allowing Pasquantino's 26th homer of the season. Brewers 4, Cubs 1 Brice Turang homered and six pitchers combined on a five-hitter in Milwaukee's win over host Chicago. Turang's two-out, two-run homer in the second gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead. He drove Shota Imanaga's 2-0 four-seam fastball through the wind, which was blowing in, and into the stands in right for Turang's 14th home run and eighth in 18 games. Isaac Collins added a two-run single in the eighth. Milwaukee starter Quinn Priester gave up a run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings, and Trevor Megill handled the ninth for his 30th save. Imanaga (8-6) allowed two runs on three hits in seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Pete Crow-Armstrong drove in Chicago's lone run on a sacrifice fly. Athletics 8, Twins 3 Tyler Soderstrom went 4-for-4 and Lawrence Butler delivered a three-run double as the Athletics completed their first three-game sweep at Minnesota since 2014. Nick Kurtz poked his 26th home run as part of the Athletics' 12-hit attack. Jack Perkins (3-2) allowed three hits and two runs over five innings while Osvaldo Bido threw the final three innings to pick up his first MLB save. Twins starter Jose Urena (0-1) surrendered seven hits and six runs in five innings. Royce Lewis cracked an RBI double while James Outman and Austin Martin added RBI singles. Padres 8, Giants 4 Manny Machado's two-run double highlighted a six-run fifth inning for host San Diego in a come-from-behind win over National League West rival San Francisco. Machado also had an RBI single in the fourth to begin the Padres' comeback from a 2-0 deficit. Xander Bogaerts had two RBIs and Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Arraez and Ramon Laureano joined Machado in supplying two hits apiece. Rafael Devers and Willy Adames hit back-to-back homers in the sixth for the Giants, who fell to 9-22 since the All-Star Break. Andrew Knizner (RBI double) and Heliot Ramos (run-scoring double play) staked San Francisco to a first-inning lead. Dodgers 9, Rockies 5 With Shohei Ohtani taking the day off after being bruised by a comebacker the night before, Freddie Freeman and Andy Pages homered to lead Los Angeles to the victory over Colorado in Denver. Clayton Kershaw (8-2) picked up his 220th career win as he allowed six hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings. Alex Freeland went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple while Freeman, Pages and Mookie Betts poked two hits apiece. Brenton Doyle went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs for the Rockies. How Tottenham will try to stop Tijjani Reijnders and rampant Man City using Super Cup tactic

Thomas Frank's Spurs may have missed out on Eberechi Eze — but there's no time to rest as they go to Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime. The 26-year-old arrived from AC Milan before the Club World Cup in a £46million move as the successor to the creative void being left behind by the legendary Kevin De Bruyne. And the Dutchman enjoyed one of the best debuts you are likely to see in the Premier League, scoring, assisting and becoming the heartbeat of City's play throughout their opener against Wolves. And SunSport's tactics man DEAN SCOGGINS — in our hit show Tactics Exposed — is asked how Tottenham will put the shackles on him? READ MORE IN FOOTBALL SPURRED ON Spurs 'decide to make club record bid for new target after Eze deal hijacked' WILL FRANK PARK THE BUS? Well, I'm not sure you can call it parking the bus, as they WILL attack. But if the question is if they will play a back five, like against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup, the answer is YES. Frank favours the back five against high-class opposition. It, obviously, gives an extra defender but more importantly, it allows a defender to 'jump' into midfield and press midfielders like Reijnders. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK City, who we'll come onto in more detail later, will look to flood the opposition half with numbers. But one way Spurs will try to stop him is by making the spaces that Reijnders likes to operate in as tight as possible by crowding them out. How Arsenal survived Man Utd's attacks with 'forcefield defence' Expect Micky van de Ven to do this role at times, with Spurs packing central areas to stifle space for City. Although they will need to be on top form, with Reijnders proving himself to be a two-footed player capable of creating danger out of thin air. What Wolves got wrong in their defensive plan was attempting to dive in on Reijnders too soon, with the midfielder able to skip past his marker before lifting a cross in for Erling Haaland. Even when he was boxed out, runners around him will be able to provide him with solutions to get around the press. 6 Man City's new creator had a superb debut against Wolves 6 He was all over the pitch and ran the show WHAT'S NEW WITH CITY? Pep Guardiola has been tinkering all summer, and we got sneak previews in the Club World Cup. In the 4-0 win at Wolves on Saturday, City were electric and tactically, it was very interesting. There is a new flexibility as they form a 2-3-5 attacking shape. From goal-kicks, their wingers can often start narrow, close to striker Haaland, with the full-backs providing the width to keep the game open. But as they get higher on the pitch, the wingers go from in to out, with full-backs inverting to give the three-man midfield, either side of Nico Gonzalez. This allows Reijnders and Bernardo Silva to bomb forward and join the front five. And while a lot of the talk around the country is about third-man runs, City might be about to pioneer a new sixth-man run. Spurs will sit deep in numbers against the City front five, but the inverted full-back will then bomb on to make a line-breaking run beyond the defensive line. We saw the likes of Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri do this a lot in the Club World Cup. And whatever side the ball is on, there will be an option for that sixth-man run. It is risky, but if Spurs play with five, it will give City one less player to worry about on the counter, meaning they can be that bit braver by committing an extra body forward. One other change of note is how wingers will be positioned on a goal kick. Last season, they were seen hugging the touchline, but in the Club World Cup, we saw the eights drop deeper and the wingers tuck inside closer to Haaland. The extra man is designed to lure a pressing rival into a trap and leave space behind them for City to then go directly into the likes of Haaland for a rapid attack, ironically, a very un-City-like move. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Phil Parkinson hails Wrexham's ‘statement of intent' with Callum Doyle signing

The Red Dragons have been busy this summer as Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's men rebuild for their first season back in English football's second tier since the 1981-82 campaign. Doyle, who joins in a deal the PA news agency understands to be worth £7.5million, is Wrexham's 10th permanent signing since promotion and follows last week's club-record £10m purchase of Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich. The 21-year-old has signed a contract until 2029, with City holding a buy-back option and inserting a 25 per cent sell-on clause. A fresh pour of bold. Callum Doyle joins the squad. 🔴⚪️ #WxmAFC — Wrexham AFC (@Wrexham_AFC) August 21, 2025 'Callum's a player we've obviously been looking at over the summer,' Wrexham boss Parkinson said. 'Always difficult deals to get because there's a player in demand. We've had to compete with some really good clubs to bring him here. 'He's only 21, he's got a lot of Championship experience, an England Under-21 international. I think he's a player of huge potential. 'This hasn't broken the transfer record. It's in line with other transfers we've made already this summer. Callum Doyle spent last season on loan at Norwich (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'But I think it is a statement of intent that we've won the signature over some established Championship clubs, who've been in the division and Premiership before recently, and obviously clubs in other European leagues.' Doyle came through the youth system at City, who have farmed the defender out on loans to Sunderland, Coventry, Leicester and most recently Norwich. The England Under-21 international already widespread Championship experience is in contention for Saturday's clash with Sheffield Wednesday. 'Obviously it's difficult to break through into Man City's team,' Parkinson said. 'I think Callum was at the stage in his career where he's ready to find a home, he'd had a lot of loan moves, and be part of something. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has had a busy summer in the transfer market (Cody Froggatt/PA) 'I've had a good chat with him over the last few days, and we were looking forward to getting him in with the boys. 'He's trained this morning with us and have another session and assess where he is fitness-wise because obviously he hasn't had loads of minutes, but he's here for the long term.' Wrexham may not stop there, though, and Parkinson says they are 'going to take stock' over a weekend they hope can mark the end their 43-year wait to win a match in the second tier. The Welsh side host the embattled Owls on Saturday afternoon having suffered a late 2-1 defeat in their opener at Southampton before falling to a 3-2 home loss to West Brom. Wednesday are having to balance off-field issues and Parkinson, who was manager of Bolton during some dark times, hopes they soon return to a sounder footing. 'You feel for the supporters of any club because football clubs are such a part of the community,' the Wrexham boss said. 'We know Sheffield (Wednesday), what pride they've got in that city, and the competition they have with United, et cetera. 'Everybody in football, we're all football people, understands that along the way that there are going to be clubs nearly every year who are in difficult situations, and it's important for the football community and world to support those clubs.'
