🚨 River Plate and Independiente del Valle confirm line-ups
The 'Millonario' hosts the 'Giant Killer' at the Estadio Mâs Monumental for the fifth matchday of the group stage of the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores. River Plate and Independiente del Valle face off this Thursday at the Estadio Mâs Monumental for Matchday 5 of Group B in the Copa Libertadores, where the 'Millonario' is looking to secure their spot in the round of 16, while their rival aims to pick up points to stay in the running for qualification. River comes into this match riding a positive streak of four consecutive victories, including a win in the Superclásico against Boca and qualification for the quarterfinals of the 2025 Torneo Apertura after defeating Barracas Central. In their last continental appearance, Marcelo Gallardo's team beat Barcelona SC 3-2 in Guayaquil and is now very close to securing their ticket to the next round. Hundred eyes shirt-sponsor deals to rival Premier League
The £520m Hundred investment will help lure sponsors to rival the Premier League's, according to the dealmaker at the heart of the format's recent sale. KP Snacks' current arrangement for all teams could be plunged into doubt as commercially savvy new stakeholders push for new global brand partners. The crisps and nuts manufacturer this year secured an additional England team partnership but there is no confirmation Hundred team sponsorships will continue into 2026. The entire Hundred deal with KP has been valued in reports at £4m a year, which is dwarfed by £10m-plus deals commanded by even smaller top tier English football teams. Referring to all sponsorship opportunities rather than just shirt deals, Jason Schretter, head of European operations for the Raine Group, said teams should already be anticipating bigger commercial partners. 'A lot of the sponsorship in the Hundred overall has been quite local,' Schretter said in an interview with Telegraph Sport after playing a key role in raising around £520m via the sale of stakes in all eight teams this year. 'With this now [the arrival of new investors] and a global view on this competition, you could expect that the types of sponsors that will be a part of this will be in line with the Premier League or other global sports.' The Premier League, he concedes, 'draws massively more audience', but the Hundred, with its new investors, is nevertheless a 'compelling' for the biggest brands. Schretter added: 'In terms of the younger demographic, if you're a sponsor, families, kids, like, where else do you get that reach in sport.' A week ago, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that six of eight team deals had been completed, with the purchases of stakes in Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets to be finalised by the end of September. The investors in those two teams – the Ambani family (Mumbai Indians) and Cain International (which is fronted by the Chelsea joint owner Todd Boehly) respectively – effectively have a deadline of October 1 to complete the deals as they take operational control of the teams on that date. 'I'm excited about next wave of merchandise' Proceeds are already being redistributed to the counties by the ECB, but Schretter says the game has much more than just the immediate pay day to be excited about. 'If you look at the investors, just forgetting about pounds contributed, I don't think we could have gotten any better of a group,' he said. 'I mean it's really a who's who of sports investors.' The Sun Group, owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Sunrisers Hyderabad, has paid just over £100m for a 100 per cent stake in Northern Superchargers, who are based at Yorkshire's home Headingley. Indian company RPSG Group, which owns Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and Durban's Super Giants in the SA20, has purchased 70 per cent of Manchester Originals, while GMR Group, which owns Delhi Capitals, has bought 49 per cent in Southern Brave. US-based groups Tech Titans (49 per cent), Knighthead Capital Management (49 per cent) and Washington Freedom (50 per cent) have completed purchases in London Spirit, Birmingham Phoenix and Welsh Fire, respectively. 'I think that the counties have a lot to offer in terms of understanding what the UK cricket experience is, but these partners have a lot to offer in terms of making the product better, making these things commercially more exciting,' Schretter says. 'I'm excited about the next wave of merchandise and everything that's going to come out.' Raine, which brokered the sales of Manchester United and Chelsea in recent years, overwhelmed some scepticism about their estimated valuation of the deal. However, Schretter, a founder partner in the group, said he had no trouble drumming up enthusiasm, despite a lack of cricketing knowledge in the US. 'I would say 90 per cent of the people that were in our process were people that we had already had strong relationships with,' he said. The Raine Group is also handling the sale of The Telegraph. Denver Summit hire former Man City, NYC FC manager Nick Cushing as head coach
Nick Cushing, the former Manchester City women and NYC FC manager, has been appointed as the first head coach of the expansion National Women's Soccer League team Denver Summit FC, who will play their inaugural NWSL season in 2026. Cushing, who won the 2016 English top-flight title during his first spell in charge of Manchester City, will begin work with Denver immediately, as they prepare for NWSL life after it was announced last December that they had been awarded a franchise spot as part of the division's expansion to 16 clubs for 2026. Boston Legacy FC are also joining the NWSL as a new outfit. Related: Flopped launch and new squad building: Boston and Denver's journey to the NWSL | Moving the Goalposts The Colorado club announced its new name and unveiled its crest and kit colour in July. They have been backed by high-profile investors, including the American skiing icon Mikaela Shiffrin, who is from Colorado, and they have plans to move to a new 14,500-seat purpose-built stadium in 2028. Cushing won six major trophies, including two Women's FA Cups, three League Cups, and Manchester City's sole women's league title to date during his six-year spell at the helm of the English club. He left in 2020 to take up an assistant role at MLS side New York City FC, where he was elevated to head coach in 2022. He returned to Man City as the Women's Super League side's interim head coach in March 2025, overseeing a fourth-placed finish after the sacking of Gareth Taylor. It is understood the chance to return to life and work in the United States with his family was something the 40-year-old particularly wanted, preferring this unique proposition from Denver over interest from other English clubs. Cushing said: 'Denver Summit FC's commitment to building a world-class soccer organisation really inspired me. We have a passionate, committed fanbase and we have to put a team on the field that replicates that. Our team will play an attacking form of the game that excites our stadium and makes things difficult for our opponents. We want to create a winning team as well as a great experience for all of Colorado.' Prior to Cushing's appointment, the new club named Curt Johnson as their general manager. The former North Carolina Courage GM added: 'In order to be successful right away, you need people that have experienced environments like this, have built organisations, and have had success. Nick brings world-class experience, a passion for player development, and a tactical vision that will excite Summit supporters. He's won major trophies and is the right leader to guide us into our first season and beyond.'

Former Man City, NYCFC coach will lead NWSL expansion Denver Summit FC
Incoming NWSL expansion team Denver Summit FC took a major step Wednesday, naming Nick Cushing as their first-ever head coach ahead of a debut season in 2026. Cushing, a native of England, is the first person to have been the head coach of an MLS and NWSL club, having managed New York City FC from 2022-24. Before that, he had held one of English women's soccer's highest-pressure jobs, leading Manchester City from 2013-20. This past spring, he returned to Manchester City on an interim basis after Gareth Taylor was dismissed in March. "Denver Summit FC's commitment to building a world-class soccer organization really inspired me," Cushing said in a press release. "We have a passionate, committed fanbase and we have to put a team on the field that replicates that. Our team will play an attacking form of the game that excites our stadium and makes things difficult for our opponents." NWSL: Trinity Rodman strikes game-winning goal in first game back from injury Cushing was named the Football Association (FA) Women's Manager of the Year in 2016 after his finest hour, in which Man City won the Women's Super League and the FA Women's Cup in the same season. Cushing's sides also finished in second place four times, losing out each time to Chelsea (who were coached by current U.S. women's national team head coach Emma Hayes throughout that run). During his time at Man City, Cushing played a role in developing six players (Lucy Bronze, Lauren Hemp, Esme Morgan, Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone and Keira Walsh) who played major roles for the England side that won this summer's UEFA Euro 2025 tournament. Under the City Football Group multi-club conglomerate — CFG owns men's teams in 12 countries, alongside several more in the women's game — Cushing moved to men's soccer in 2022, taking over NYCFC after Ronny Deila departed following an MLS Cup triumph the previous year. Under Cushing, NYCFC had an up-and-down three years, going on deep playoff runs in 2022 and 2024 but not qualifying for the postseason in 2023. Cushing was relieved of his duties shortly after the end of the 2024 season. As opposed to the hierarchical nature of operating at CFG clubs, Cushing will step into a blank slate with Denver. Summit FC is an independent club joining NWSL next season alongside Boston Legacy FC. As of now, that includes a roster with zero players, though ESPN reported Monday that a deal for Orlando Pride winger Ally Watt is already done. Per the report, the Colorado Springs native has already been loaned back to Orlando to complete the 2025 season before joining up with Denver in January.
