Swanage beaten by Martinstown in opening game of Premier 2 campaign
The visitors batted first and were kept under pressure by an exceptional spell of economic, swing bowling by Steve Ramsay, however, crucially for the visitors they only lost one wicket.
With the confidence from this solid foundation, the visitors top-order were able to play with great freedom and flourish. This led to two majestic centuries and another half-century and at 298-3 were on course for a score in excess of 450 (especially, with the option of the extra overs), despite the best efforts of Swanage's spin-twins Sid Nash & Pete Richards.
But, when James Harding returned with his fantastic variations in seam bowling - he claimed four wickets, the visitors were still able to declare on 414-7 in the 55th over.
In response to this mammoth total, Swanage set-off in pursuit at 9 runs-an-over during the powerplay with both Tom Rutherford and Mark Stacy both sharing a half-century partnership with Mike Salmon.
But, when Salmon was dismissed for a belligerent 66 - his third half-century of the summer already, Swanage's chances of winning disappeared. So, in spite of the fact the hosts top seven all made a good start, no-one else got beyond 35 as wickets fell at regular intervals.
The hosts were left with a battle to survive the remaining overs to get a draw, but, they were prevented from doing so by the visitors rerurning overseas 'star', and the hosts were dismissed with six overs remaining.
Also on Saturday, the 2ndXI travelled to Martinstown in their latest Division 4 clash. The hosts won the toss (and quite surprisingly elected to bat first in rather overcast conditions).
The visitors' main strike-bowler - Harry Long, was unplayable. He mixed hostile seam bowling with some sensational swing bowling to claim his first five-wicket haul of the summer to help reduce the shell-shocked hosts to 68-6.
The pressure was maintained on the hosts by Josh Gould. Michael Barry & Dylan Church, also, both took a brace of wickets to enable the hosts to be skittled-out for just 115.
In reply, the visitors faced two in-form, experienced opening batsmen - Simon Goldsack and John Lewis, had few alarms against the hosts in-experienced bowling attack to complete a comprehensive 10-wicket win to keep the team in second place. This was their third opening-stand of over 100 in their last seven games together. Goldsack made 56 and Lewis 47.
As well as that, the 3rdXI played host to a very-strong Stalbridge Development XI on the Nursery Ground pitch at Days Park.
Just like over on the main pitch, the visitors powerful top-order batting line-up produced two centurions and another half-centurion as the visitors amassed a formidable score of 369-7 from their 40 overs. This was despite an incredible spell of off-spin bowling by one of Swanage's many rising 'stars' - Bradley Bulpitt - who took his first-ever five-wicket haul.
Despite the visitors monumental score, in reply, the hosts innings got-off to a positive start with a half-century stand between Don Van Staden and Gary Marsh (25). As well as that, Van Staden shared two other half-century partnerships with Geoff Willcocks (29) and Seb Wright (28) to enable Swanage to secure maximum batting points and finish on a very respectable 185-5 against a very good bowling attack, with Van Staden carrying his bat for a majestic score of 75.

Swanage's Nash and Lewis impress with partnership in defeat to Hamworthy
ON SATURDAY, the Swanage 2ndXI travelled to Hamworthy for their latest Division 4 encounter. After losing the toss and being put into bat, the visitor's opening-pair of Mike Nash & John Lewis were determined to 'lay' a sound foundation to enable the middle-order to flourish later in the innings. They were able to do this by mixing solid defence with some ferocious drives and pull-shots - together they constructed a brilliant 120-run partnership, until in the 22nd over, Lewis was caught in the outfield attempting his ninth boundary for an excellent 48. Despite losing another wicket straight away, the momentum of the innings was maintained when the in-form Sid Nash joined Mike and they both continued to bat in a positive fashion. Mike was finally dismissed trying to hit his second maximum (to go along with his other 10 boundaries) for 77. Despite the fact wickets continued to fall, Sid batted very belligerently and, fittingly brought up his second consecutive half-century, with a 'towering' six into the pavilion. He was eventually dismissed off the final ball of the innings going for his 11th boundary for 66 off just 55 balls, but had enabled the visitors to reach the respectable total of 236-6 from their 40 overs. The hosts got-off to truly remarkable start, with their 'star' batsman reaching a half-century in just the 5th over. He continued to bat in this very aggressive manner reaching a quite simply astonishing century in only the 15th over. He was finally dismissed for a staggering 141 off just 74 balls - his remarkable innings included 26 boundaries and allowed the hosts to complete a convincing nine-wicket victory in just the 27th over. Despite this defeat, the visitors remain in third place in an incredibly competitive division and are still within touching distance of the top two. Also on Saturday, the 3rdXI continued their 'fight' against relegation in Division 5 when they hosted Wimborne 4thXI on the Nursery ground at Days Park. The visited batted first and, although Paul Knight - claimed 4 wickets and Tim Ives & Sam Willcocks claimed 3 and 2 wickets respectively the visitors managed to reach 237 before they were bowled-out. In reply, the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals and, although, David Alcock made 38 were in the very precarious position of 110-7 when he was dismissed. This brought together Geoff Willcocks & Matt. Dunster - who changed the complexion of the game completely with an unbelievable 108-run partnership in only 16 overs. Willcocks struck 11 boundaries (and lost 3 balls in the process) as he 'smashed' 67 off just 52 balls. He was ably supported by Dunster - who made an enterprising 31. However, there was still more nail-biting drama to come because as they were both removed in the same over to leave the hosts 219-9. As the game entered the last over - the hosts still needed 14 runs, they were indebted to Knight who struck two of the last four balls of the match to the boundary to secure a remarkable win for Dunster's side (to move them out of the relegation places). As well as that, the 1stXI played host to Martinstown in Premier Division 2. The hosts batted first and despite another half-century by the in-form Tom Wells (59) and some resistance from the lower-order of Nick Pestana, Freddie Long & Steve Ramsay, the hosts never recovered from 131-6 and were 'shot-out' for just 185. In reply, the visitors had few-alarms in reaching their target and, although Matt. Beard took two wickets in an-over - they completed a comfortable four-wicket victory. This defeat still leaves the hosts in a secure mid-table position.

'Why don't AFC Bournemouth sponsor the air festival?'
Enviously looking across the bay from Bournemouth beach at another spectacular display by the Red Arrows at Swanage we too wondered why BCP can no longer afford anything as a summer highlight (Martin Thomas in Letters)? In two weeks time Eastbourne hosts an International Airshow with Red Arrows headlining on each of the four days - all cost neutral for the council and carbon compensated, they say. How do they do it and we can't in Bournemouth? As an extra plus we have an excellent airport with all facilities within minutes of our extensive beach display area and used by the Reds for other displays several times a year. Our remaining local bright spot must be having our Premier League football team in the heart of the town. I'm sure BCP Council is working closely with the football club in the exciting development of the Cherries stadium. As a keen fan pointed out that in the financial world of Premier League football sponsoring an airshow must rate as fairly small change? How about an AFC Bournemouth Air Festival? We live in hope!
