PHOENIX (AP) — Zac Gallen has been one of baseball's best pitchers the past three seasons, the player the Arizona Diamondbacks could rely on when things weren't go so well.
The Diamondbacks are in a rut and not even their ace has been able to pull them out of it.

Gallen (3-7) labored for the fourth straight start, allowing six runs in less than six innings of a 10-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
'I don't want to be overly critical of Zac because he's so good and can be an elite, dominant major league pitcher for his next start to the rest of the season, but at this point I know how frustrated he is — I can see it,' Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. 'The inconsistencies of results have been there, so it's an indication that he's grinding for sure.'
Gallen has been grinding more this season perhaps more than any other time since he arrived in the desert in 2019.
The right-hander won at least 12 games the previous three seasons — a high of 17 in 2023 — has annually been in the mix for the NL Cy Young Award, finishing third two seasons ago.

Gallen has been dominant at times this season, labored others.
The 29-year-old opened the season by allowing four runs in four innings against the Chicago Cubs, then tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium his next start.
The up and down continued from there.
Gallen had consecutive games of allowing one run in wins over the New York Mets, but also has allowed at least four runs seven times — one more than the entire 2024 season. He has allowed 19 earned runs over 22 innings his last four starts and his 5.54 ERA is on pace to be the highest of his career by more than a run.
The biggest issue: walks.

Gallen has been a pitcher who's around the plate most of his career, yet has struggled at times to find the zone this season. He's walked 32 already this season at a rate of 4.2 per nine innings — well over his career average of 2.9.
Gallen walked three against the Pirates, all to lead off innings. All three scored.
'Obviously, it's really frustrating because for me, I'm not really trying to walk anybody,' said Gallen, who allowed five earned runs on five hits in five-plus innings. 'There pitches I missed by an entire plate, trying to go in and throwing it in the other batter's box. It just feels very uncharacteristic, in a way, that walks been an issue."
Gallen had been the Arizona's rock, the player they could count on after a difficult loss or stretch of games. He couldn't come through against the Pirates, extending a stretch where nothing seems to be going right for the Diamondbacks.

The loss to the Pirates came a night after Arizona gave up seven runs in the eighth inning of a 9-6 loss to the Pirates. Above .500 since the second game of the season, the Diamondbacks are now 27-28 after their seventh loss in eight games.
'In this game, when you're down it'll get you, that's for sure,' Gallen said. 'Obviously, you can't say keep doing what we're doing, but just keep plugging away, just kind of keep hitting that rock and one day it will break.'
Based on Gallen's past performances, it's just a matter of time.

Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes leaves game against Nationals with elbow discomfort

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes was lifted after just 70 pitches Sunday against the Washington Nationals with right elbow discomfort. Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters after Arizona's 3-1 win that Burnes will have an MRI on Monday. Advertisement Arizona led 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Burnes allowed a single by CJ Abrams with two outs. The right-hander then gestured toward the dugout with his glove and yelled in frustration. Jalen Beeks replaced Burnes and gave up an RBI single before getting the third out. Burnes allowed a run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, with a walk and six strikeouts. He is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts this season. Arizona signed Burnes to a $210 million, six-year contract before the season. He's been effective, but the Diamondbacks have dealt with a slew of pitching injuries. Jordan Montgomery (Tommy John surgery) is out for the season, Eduardo Rodríguez (shoulder) is on the injured list and reliever A.J. Puk (elbow) is on the IL as well. Advertisement Arizona allowed 10 runs in the first inning Saturday, its ninth loss in 10 games. Durability hasn't been much of a concern for the 30-year-old Burnes, who has made at least 28 starts in every season since he won the 2021 National League Cy Young Award for Milwaukee. He spent his first six years with the Brewers before being traded to Baltimore before the 2024 season. After one year with the Orioles, he signed with the Diamondbacks as a free agent.

Machado homers and hits go-ahead sac fly as the Padres beat the Pirates 6-4

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado homered in the first inning and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in a four-run seventh for the San Diego Padres, who rallied past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 on Sunday to take two of three games in their series. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot to tie Roberto Clemente for third place on Pittsburgh's career list with 240 homers. Adam Frazier also went deep to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Gavin Sheets slammed face-first into the wall while tracking Frazier's homer and left the game. The Padres started their comeback in the sixth when Jackson Merrill's second double of the game brought in three-time batting champion Luis Arraez, who was aboard on a one-out double. San Diego broke through against reliever Tanner Rainey (0-1), who came on to start the seventh and walked three of the five batters he faced and allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Elías Díaz. After Rainey walked Fernando Tatis Jr. to load the bases with one out, Caleb Ferguson came on and allowed Arraez's single that tied it and Machado's sac fly. Tyler Wade beat out a bases-loaded single that Ferguson knocked down but couldn't find in time to make a play. It was the second homer in two games and fifth of the season for the 38-year-old McCutchen, who's in his 17th big league season and 12th with Pittsburgh over two stints. The shot off Randy Vásquez with one out in the third inning gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Machado's homer off starter Andrew Heaney was his seventh. Key stat McCutchen has 324 homers during a 17-year career in which he's also played for Philadelphia, Milwaukee, San Francisco and the New York Yankees. Up next Pirates RHP Paul Skenes (4-5, 2.15 ERA) is scheduled to start Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series against Houston that begins a nine-game homestand. The Padres hadn't announced a starter for Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at San Francisco. ___
