Indonesia arrests 170 foreigners in immigration sweep
JAKARTA: (Bernama-Xinhua) The Indonesian government has arrested 170 foreigners from 27 countries during immigration operations conducted from May 14 to May 16 across Greater Jakarta, covering Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections said on Friday (May 16), reported Xinhua.
The foreigners are suspected of violating Indonesia's Immigration Law. They could face up to five years in prison plus fines.
The operation targeted apartments, cafes and shopping centres, marking the third major sweep this year, following similar actions in Bali, North Maluku, and the industrial zones of Morowali and Tobelo. - Bernama-Xinhua

Three people lose over RM80,000 to lucky draw scam
KUALA TERENGGANU: A man and two women lost a total of RM88,141.50 after falling victim to a lucky draw scam syndicate. Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the first victim initially saw a lucky draw advertisement on a social media site and clicked on the link provided to register and obtain further information. He said the victim then filled in his personal information and banking details in the hope of winning the lucky draw. "The first incident occurred on May 31 involving a 38-year-old male teacher who lost RM63,141.50. "The victim only realised the loss of the money five days after the incident and upon checking, found there were 49 transactions from his bank account to seven other unknown accounts in just two days," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 11). Azli said the second incident occurred on June 1 involving a 58-year-old company director who lost RM15,000 while the third victim was a 50-year-old female doctor who lost RM10,000 of her savings in the incident on June 5. "We have repeatedly advised the public not to click on any suspicious links on social media. "Do not give out personal and banking information carelessly because there are many fraud syndicates just waiting for victims," he said. - Bernama

Sarawak General Operations Force foils attempts to smuggle contraband goods worth nearly RM12 million

KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled several smuggling attempts involving various goods worth RM11.93 million during 'Op Taring Alpha' and 'Op Taring Awas/Batas' carried out at multiple locations across the state. Its deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said in the first operation carried out at 4.30 am yesterday, the GOF detained two trailer lorries in Sri Aman suspected of transporting smuggled goods. Advertisement 'Checks on both vehicles uncovered 21,500 cartons of white cigarettes and 51,216 litres of liquor, believed to have been brought in without the payment of duties and valid permits. 'Two local men aged 44 and 50 were also detained, while the two trailer lorries along with four containers were seized. The seizure is estimated to be worth RM10.47 million,' he said in a statement here today. Rosdi said in the second operation on June 8 at about 9.30 pm, the GOF detained two lorries in Bau suspected of transporting rattan without valid documents, and arrested two local men aged 25 and 33. 'Inspections uncovered 15 tonnes of rattan, with the total seizure valued at RM620,000,' he said. Meanwhile, Rosdi said in two separate operations on June 6, the GOF seized frozen products in Bau district and arrested a 49-year-old local man. 'At the first location, a lorry carrying 7,800 kilogrammes of frozen meat without a permit was detained at 10.05 pm, with the seizure valued at approximately RM488,600. 'At the second location, at 6.10 am in Padawan, a 27-year-old man was detained. A Toyota Harrier SUV, reported to have been fraudulently obtained, was seized. The vehicle is estimated to be worth RM175,000,' he said. Local trio, foreign woman detained for holding three men against their will
GEORGE TOWN: Three local men and a foreign woman have been arrested in connection with wrongfully confining three Indonesian men. George Town deputy OCPD Supt Lee Swee Sake said the three men, aged 40 to 56, and the woman, aged 40, have been remanded for four days from Wednesday (June 11) to June 14. "We acted upon the case after a foreign man made a police report on Tuesday (June 10) saying his friend had been 'locked up' at an apartment in George Town. "We raided the apartment and rescued three foreign men aged between 28 and 52. "They were okay and healthy," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 11). Supt Lee said during the raid, they arrested three men and a woman who were involved in the case. "Their role was to look after the victims at the apartment. "The case is being investigated under Section 344 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement for a period of ten days or more. "The suspect has been remanded to assist with further investigations," he said. Supt Lee urged the public not to make any speculations about the case as it could affect investigations. A news portal previously reported that the three victims did not know one another, and their passports were held by a suspect under the pretext of securing jobs for them. The trio are believed to have had their feet chained to the window grilles of the apartment.
