David Beckham's bold King Charles decision after 'horror' Prince Harry blow

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

David Beckham seems to have forged a close friendship with both King Charles and Prince William - but it seems that his once friendly bond with Prince Harry has faded, especially in recent times...
His working-class roots in East London and his former footballing career means David Beckham never seemed likely to one day count royalty as close friends. But the former England captain has somehow become a regular fixture at royal events, often being pictured with the likes of King Charles and Prince William.
And today the star's royal connections were on show once again as he had a surprise meeting with the King at the Chelsea Flower Show. At the event, Beckham discussed his recent 50th birthday celebrations, with Queen Camilla asking about his fashion designer wife Victoria, who she met in March at a charity gig. Giving the royal couple an update on his wife, he said: "She's doing very well. I had a busy weekend this weekend, so it was a lot of fun, a lot of fun."

The King and Queen are even understood to have sent Beckham a birthday gift, with Charles asking him "You got it, didn't you?" And Beckham replied: "It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind." Later Camilla said: "Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses."
But despite his seemingly close royal friendships, there is one member of the Firm where it seems relations have cooled...
King Charles
As a former Spice Girl, Beckham's wife Victoria had several encounters with the King before he ascended to the throne, including one where he was showered with their kisses. But it seems it's Beckham himself who now shares a closer bond with the monarch. Last year, it was reported that the two men shared a private meeting despite the King's estranged son Prince Harry being in Britain at the time.
Weeks later, it was revealed exactly what that meeting was about as the ex-England football captain was named a King's Foundation ambassador. In photographs released to mark the announcement, Beckham was pictured with the King on the doorstep of Highgrove, Charles' Gloucestershire retreat, and shown trying out his carpentry skills with foundation students taking part in woodworking courses at the Snowdon School of Furniture.
The pair also swapped beekeeping tips as both have hives and Beckham said: "Having developed a love for the countryside I'm also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation's work. It was inspiring to hear from the King about the work of His Majesty's foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips!"

Weeks later, the two men caught up again at the inaugural King's Foundation awards at Buckingham Palace - and chatted about football by discussing England's chances in the Euro 2024 championships. Then last December, Beckham and wife Victoria joined the King and hundreds of other guests for a banquet at Buckingham Palace during the Qatar state visit.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, in a much more intimate gathering, the couple also joined Charles and Camilla for a dinner at Highgrove that celebrated ties between the UK and Italy.
Prince Harry
When it comes to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Beckham's friendship seems far less cosy. At first, it seemed the Sussexes were on very friendly terms with the Beckhams and they were reportedly eager to make Meghan feel welcome in the UK. In fact, there were reports that Victoria had given Meghan access to her little black book of her favourite hairdressers and stylists in London.

However, the first sign of tension came shortly after this, when reports about Victoria helping out Meghan were published - leaving the Sussexes upset. According to the Mail On Sunday, Harry confronted David with his suspicions in a phone call that left the ex-Manchester United star "furious".
Afterwards, the couples seemed to put the ordeal behind them with David and Victoria at St George's Chapel in Windsor to see Harry and Meghan get married in May 2018. Victoria wore a chic navy dress and hat while David looked smart in a morning suit. Several months later, the royal couple headed off on a tour of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, which coincided with the 2018 Invictus Games, which were being held in Sydney. Harry and a pregnant Meghan appeared at the opening ceremony of the Games.

Harry is said to have asked David to be an ambassador for the Invictus Games - but things reportedly turned sour when the prince refused to see the former England football captain at the event in Sydney in 2018. It was claimed that the reason Harry was keeping his friend at arms' length was Meghan - as she feared Victoria was leaking stories about her to the press.
Just last week, Harry's relationship with the Beckham clan took an unexpected turn when it emerged David's oldest son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz had been for dinner at the Sussexes' California home. Both Harry and Brooklyn are both embroiled in bitter feuds that have seemed to tear their families apart.

It is believed that Harry and wife Meghan hosted Brooklyn and his wife Nicola at their Montecito mansion just days after Brooklyn skipped his dad David's 50th birthday celebrations amid a family row.
According to The Sun, the invitation that Brooklyn and Nicola received to attend the event was 'unexpected' but one they gratefully received after feeling "battle-wounded" by the family feud. Victoria and David are said to have 'shuddered in horror' over the 'new friendship', the Daily Mail reports.
Harry has also been grappling with his own family row and earlier this month claimed the King will not speak to him and he does not know "how much longer my father has" as he spoke of his hopes for a 'reconciliation' with his family. A source told the publication: "Harry and Meghan were very empathetic and very kind to them both. 'Harry was fully aware of the situation and offered Brooklyn his unwavering support as someone who has been through similar."

Prince William
Like Harry, William has known David and Victoria for many years with the Beckhams being at Westminster Abbey when the now Prince of Wales married Kate Middleton back in 2011. In 2022, David joined both William and Kate when they travelled to Boston for the Prince of Waleses' second annual Earthshot Prize awards, where he presented one of the prizes at one of William's main projects.
And just last year, Beckham joined the heir to the throne at a fundraising event for the London Air Ambulance. During an event at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Becks was asked about his royal pals and recent work with the monarchy. And he became emotional and admitted he always gets "emotional talking about anything that I do with our Royal Family".

When it came to William, Becks said that he's joined forces with the Prince "whenever he's asked me to get involved". He explained: To be involved in that has always been a 'yes' for me. Whenever the Prince of Wales sends me a message and says 'I need you to do this' or 'be there', it's always a 'yes'."
When it came to his role with Charles' King's Foundation, he praised the monarch as an incredible man and revealed his mum Sandra burst into tears when he told her he'd been asked to be an ambassador for the charity. He added: " She knows my grandparents would have been proud that I have played such an important role in the Royal Family and the charities that they have."

I've found the perfect summer top from M&S, and I'm even more excited now I can finally shop there online again

IT can be heard to find a versatile top to style up for day or night without resorting to the same old T-shirt. So it's no wonder there's a new option from Marks & Spencer that has fashion fans all excited. 3 3 Mum-of-two Irene is among them, and took to her Instagram page to share a look at the top in question. The £35 option comes in cream or black, and features a "classic round neckline" and button up back. But it's the detail on the hem that really ups the wow factor - a gorgeous fringe trim. "How cute is this top from Marks & Spencer?" Irene captioned her Instagram Reel. In the video, she teamed the cream top with a pair of wide-legged cream trousers, metallic sandals and a straw beach-style bag. She added some cute jewellery and wore her hair in loose, beachy waves. And other people were quick to add to Irene's praise of the top. "Love this!" one wrote. As another agreed: "It's truly cute!" "Fringe trims give this elegant top a fun, free-spirited twist," M&S said of the Collection top on their website. Shoppers run for summer's 'wow factor' denim jacket in M&S, it's set to go viral "The textured detailing adds movement and flair, perfect for lifting everyday outfits." Shoppers haven't been able to nab anything from M&S online for over a month, following a damaging cyber attack over Easter weekend in April. Personal data of customers, which may have included names, email addresses, dates of birth and postal addresses, was taken in the attack - after which M&S halted online orders. But now the outlet is once again accepting online orders on certain products - with "more of our fashion, home and beauty products will be added every day", John Lyttle, M&S managing director of clothing, home and beauty, said. In a statement posted on social media, he added: "We will resume deliveries to Northern Ireland and Click and Collect in the coming weeks. "Thank you sincerely for your support and for shopping with us." Luckily enough, the fringe top is one of the products available to buy from the M&S website now. However, due to demand, delivery will take around 10 days.

Meghan Markle's Hollywood A-list wedding guests were friends she 'wanted to recruit', royal insider claims

It was the celebrity event of the year when Prince Harry and Meghan said 'I do' in May 2018. But while royal weddings are often a who's who of A-listers, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex 's matrimony had more of a tinsel town sparkle than any previous union. George and Amal Clooney, the cast of Suits and Oprah Winfrey were just some of the Hollywood guests in St George's Chapel. Although many famous faces from across the pond were there as friends of Meghan, it has been claimed that the duchess was not very chummy with the stars. The attendants were not Meghan's nearest and dearest but rather the friends she 'most wanted to recruit', royal insider Tina Brown wrote in her book The Palace Papers. 'The celebrity guests were a portrait not of Meghan's intimate circle but of the friends she most wanted to recruit,' Brown said. Even Oprah had 'scarcely met' Meghan before the big day and when columnist Rachel Johnson asked the Clooneys how they knew Meghan, the couple replied: 'We don't.' Since Harry and Meghan stood down as working royals in 2020, the duchess has struggled to recruit the friends she was so keen to make. George and Amal Clooney at Harry and Meghan's wedding. They were just some of the A-list celebrities at the ceremony Amal attended Meghan's lavish £221,000 New York baby shower in 2019. However, in recent years the lawyer has only deepened her ties with royals by launching the Amal Clooney Women's Empowerment Award with the King's Trust. After her notorious interview with Oprah in 2021 - when the duchess opened up about her mental health struggles and claimed a member of the Firm asked about Archie's skin colour - it does not appear the pair have been in contact much since. And Oprah was not one of the guests Meghan booked for her Netflix series With Love, Meghan. Indeed, the calibre of stars on the lifestyle programme lacked much of the Hollywood glamour the duchess attempted to project at her wedding. Meghan is said to have struggled to book some of her more famous friends for the show, which launched in March. Viewers had expected her to bring in the likes of Montecito neighbour Oprah, tennis superstar Serena Williams and filmmaker Tyler Perry - who is godfather to Princess Lilibet. The Duchess could instead only muster up Suits co-star Abigail Spencer, Delfina Figueras - socialite wife of Harry's polo-playing chum Nacho - and chef Roy Choi. The biggest stars to appear were Harry himself - restricted to a couple of minutes of the final episode in the eight-part series - and US Office actress, writer and producer Mindy Kaling, who appears in the second episode. A source told The Sun: 'They struggled to book guests. They had a real hard time, and it shows.' Hopes had been high for the series after Meghan's earlier creative projects featured a host of top-tier stars. Short-lived podcast Archetypes - which lasted 12 episodes across three months - featured Serena, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and Superbad filmmaker Judd Apatow. And Harry & Meghan, the Sussexes' first Netflix project, featured Perry and Serena, the latter talking about attending the Sussexes' wedding. But Netflix executives are alleged to have been underwhelmed by the couple's output, from docuseries Heart of Invictus through to Harry's recent series Polo, which featured very little of the duke at all. While Serena Williams did not appear in With Love, Meghan, she did take to Instagram to give it a shout-out. She wrote: 'I'm so excited for you to check out WITH LOVE, MEGHAN, now streaming exclusively on Netflix! 'Join my wonderful friend @meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, as she opens up her world and shares her personal tips for the kitchen, garden, and so much more. 'It's a fun and inspiring series that reminds us all how easy it is to bring a little beauty into our everyday lives, even when we least expect it. Can't wait for you to experience it!' With Love, Meghan cracked Netflix's 'Top 10' in the UK after one day, reaching number six in the charts. However it has been critically panned, with just a 33 per cent approval rating from professional critics according to aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In her Mail+ review, Amanda Platell branded it 'so awful it is almost compelling', while Hollywood bible Variety panned the series as 'a Montecito ego trip not worth taking'. The Guardian's Chitra Ramaswamy called it 'vacuous, over styled joylessness', while the Telegraph's Anita Singh noted glibly that the format appeared to consist of Meghan 'invit(ing) people to her pretend house and they tell her how amazing she is'. Reacting to the negative reception, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline: 'This, after the Hearts of Invictus series failed to grab viewers' attention and the Polo series predictably didn't either, is make or break for Meghan.' He added: 'Who will watch apart from the fans? Perhaps a few stay-at-home mums who can afford the luxury which Meghan obviously worships. 'At the moment she and Harry can, too. However, after spending four hours watching a series as bad as this, one has to ask, for how much longer?'

Warwickshire LGBTQIA+ people asked to share end of life stories

A new film project will share the stories of people in the LGBTQIA+ community who are facing the end of their lives, with the aim of improving the support available to project, funded by the University of Warwick, is looking for participants to share their project lead, Prof Michele Aaron, said LGBTQIA+ people were often reluctant to access end-of-life care and bereavement services because they feared discrimination."This project is all about harnessing the power of film to bring these really important stories into the world," she said. Prof Aaron, who previously worked on another series of films about people affected by terminal illness, said there was a lack of films depicting the reality of death - even more so for LGBTQIA+ people."Hollywood tells us it's painless; it's white; it's heroic; it's straight."And we don't have truthful, honest depictions of everyday LGBT experience in the world. We have sensationalist or exceptional stories."But what we're looking at is real-life stories." The project is a collaboration between the university, queer film-maker El Jones, and the charity Compassionate Communities for those taking part will be provided by Helen Juffs, an end-of-life doula who offers spiritual and emotional guidance to those dealing with a terminal diagnosis, who herself identifies as said people from the LGBTQIA+ community were often reluctant to go into institutions such as hospices because of the need to come out to fellow patients or medical described a gay woman in her 90s who was afraid well-meaning staff might pressure her to conform to feminine standards by offering to paint her nails or style her hair. "Your identity doesn't change just because you're dying," she said. "You're still from that community and you still need to be respected and treated accordingly." 'Incredibly powerful' Ms Juffs said LGBTQIA+ people also risked being subject to so-called microaggressions."It might only be a tiny thing in somebody else's mind, like assuming that you've got a husband if you're a woman, assuming that the person who visits you all the time is your brother or sister because they're the same sex as you," she explained."It's the raft of microaggressions that really make life uncomfortable in institutions."One of the participants is Trevor Yellon, a GP who struggled to find suitable bereavement support after losing his husband, Drew, to cancer in 2023."I needed someone who could understand why, as a gay man, some elements of my loss felt different and difficult - and I wasn't able to do that," said Dr Yellon."This project... will not only create awareness of the needs of LGBTQIA+ communities at end-of-life and during bereavement, but also give insight into our real lives, our monogamous, committed long-term relationships, and our care, love and grief.""It's incredibly powerful to share your story and have your voice heard," added Prof Aaron."But here specifically, the voice can then be heard by people who really need to hear it."
