Allan Ahlberg, British children's author of 'Funny Bones' and 'The Jolly Postman', dies aged 87
Ahlberg wrote 150 books, including beloved titles like 'The Jolly Postman or Other People's Letters', 'Funny Bones', 'Burglar Bill', 'Peepo!' and 'Each Peach Pear Plum'. He worked with his first wife, Janet, an award-winning illustrator, for these classics – which sold millions of copies around the world.
The prize-winning 'The Jolly Postman', published in 1991, has sold over six million copies.
In Euronews Culture's The Books That Made Us, we described "The Jolly Postman"'s 'wild and varied characters' and the happiness that decries from reading such a joyful book.
After Janet's death in 1994, he worked with other illustrators like Raymond Briggs and then went on to collaborate with his daughter Jessica for books like 'Half a Pig'.
Ahlberg also made headlines in 2014 when he refused a lifetime achievement award because it was sponsored by Amazon, which was facing criticism over its tax arrangements.
Francesca Dow, head of children's literature at Penguin Random House, said: "Allan was one of the most extraordinary authors I have had the privilege and pleasure to work with. His brilliant books – so many of them created with his late wife, Janet, the highly talented illustrator – have been described as 'mini masterpieces'.'
She added: "Allan's are some of the very best – true classics, which will be loved by children and families for years to come. Dear Allan, we will all miss you enormously."
Fellow children's author Michael Rosen said in a tribute on X: "You were a pioneer of great children's literature, both in picture books and poetry. You were clever, funny and wise. My children loved your books. So did and so DO I."
Born in Croydon in 1938, Ahlberg was adopted into a working-class family living in the West Midlands town of Oldbury. He worked as a postman and gravedigger before training to become a teacher at Sunderland Teacher Training College, where he met Janet.
Ahlberg is survived by his wife Vanessa, daughter Jessica and stepdaughters Saskia and Johanna.

Hopes new Ed Sheeran music video can bring tourists to Suffolk town
There are hopes that Ed Sheeran's new music video will provide a boost to Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk. Various locations around the west Suffolk town feature in the singer's video for his song 'A Little More', which was released on Thursday. Hengrave Hall is one of the sites which plays a prominent part, as well as All Saints Hotel in Fornham St Genevieve, Fitta Bodies Gym, the British Sugar factory and St Mary's Church. David Harris is hoping the music video can bring a boost to the area (Image: Newsquest) David Harris, of Hengrave Hall, praised Sheeran for how he helps to promote Suffolk to his millions of followers. "The platform that it gives to Bury is huge, and I think Ed Sheeran does a lot to promote Suffolk as a county," said Mr Harris. "We are very lucky to have a world superstar to have in Suffolk that does put so much back into the county. How many visitors will come to Bury that would not before?" Mr Harris believes it will make a "huge difference" for the amount of people that visit Suffolk. He praised his team for how they dealt with the filming, which took around one week, stating they "pull together to deliver the very best". Harry Potter star Rupert Grint plays a prominent role in the video, which racked up more than one million views in 24 hours. Screen Suffolk helped facilitate the filming around the town. A spokesperson for the company said: "As the official film office for the county, Screen Suffolk were delighted to facilitate filming across West Suffolk and in Ipswich. "It's so great to see Bury St Edmunds featured so recognisably in this brilliant video." Both Sheeran and Mr Grint were spotted at alongside each other earlier this year, as Ipswich Town lost 1-0 to Tottenham.

Deal: The Yaber L2s Projector is just $134.98, and it's actually quite enjoyable!
Projectors are kind of magical. Nothing quite beats enjoying a weekend movie, cozied up in your favorite blankie, in a dark room, with a projector playing a movie on your wall. The thing is, projectors were usually very expensive, but things are changing, and now you can get something like the Yaber L2s projector, which will look great and is only going for $134.98 right now! Buy the Yaber L2s Projector for just $134.98 ($65.01 off) This offer is available from Amazon, but the official seller is Woot. That said, Woot is a deals-focused website owned by Amazon, so you're buying from a reputable source. Additionally, you get a 30-day return window, and the product is in new condition. Also, only the Misty White version is on sale. The Charcoal White model is going for $259.99. Yaber Projector L2s Home Cinema Yaber Projector L2s Home Cinema See price at Amazon Save $65.01 Limited Time Deal! If you walk inside my pad, you won't find a TV anywhere. Truth is, I don't have much time to enjoy one, so I own a projector, which I store away and only bring out when I can enjoy a good film. I have also taken it with me to other people's houses. Modern projectors are affordable, convenient, and look pretty good. This is why we can recommend something like the Yaber L2s to most people, and it costs a mere $134.98 right now! Our co-workers at have reviewed the Yaber L2s Projector, and while it isn't as impressive as more expensive models, they were quite happy with the value. The clean, simple, and compact design makes it very portable. However, it does not have a battery, so you'll need to plug it in to use it. This is why we don't truly consider it a portable projector. It's easy to carry if you want to use it at a friend's house, though. The projector is simple and user-friendly, though. You won't really need to worry much about maintenance, and operating it is straightforward. In terms of specs, we're looking at a pretty nice Full HD resolution with a 700-lumen brightness. Based on our experience, it is great for dark rooms, but things start getting a bit less visible once the environment gets a bit brighter. The image can be expanded up to a whopping 150 inches, turning any wall into a fun little movie theater. Considering the price and size, we were actually quite surprised by the audio quality. The couple of 8W JBL-powered speakers sound pretty good, and they get loud. Of course, they are still not as good as a good dedicated speaker, but it should be more than enough to enjoy a movie in your living room. If we had to complain about anything, it would be that it comes with no integrated smart TV OS. It's to be expected when a projector is this good and cheap, though. You can definitely get a smart TV dongle or box and plug it into the HDMI port. Honestly, you shouldn't consider any other options if you want to pay this little for a projector. It's kind of too good for the cost, especially at this discounted price. Go get it while you can! Follow

Netflix Has A New Political Thriller On The Way For Fans Of The Diplomat
Heads up for anyone who's been craving more of the particular brand of political maneuvering and high-stakes drama that Netflix series like "The Diplomat" have built some can't-miss storytelling around: The streaming giant has a brand new series coming in August that definitely belongs on your watchlist if you're a fan of shows like Keri Russell's acclaimed thriller. It's "Hostage," premiering on August 21, and it's all about the impossible choices that confront world leaders who find themselves forced to juggle politics with their own behind-the-scenes messes. The new show follows a British prime minister (played by Suranne Jones) whose husband is kidnapped during a state visit. Her rival, the visiting French president, is also blackmailed, twin calamities that force the two leaders to work together as their futures and lives are both at risk. The series comes from Matt Charman, the writer of "Bridge of Spies" and creator of "Treason." And for all of those reasons, including the fantastic cast that includes Julie Delpy as the French leader, it seems to me that "Hostage" is already looking like the kind of series that will have political thriller fans like me glued to the screen. "I've been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne, and I honestly believe what she's done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away," Charman said in an interview with Netflix's Tudum. "An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family — she's fierce, ruthless, and you can't take your eyes off of her." A Showdown At The Highest Level Of Power "Hostage" opens with the French president's visit to London, a bit of diplomatic pageantry that gets derailed when the British prime minister's husband is abducted. The blackmailing of the French head of state soon forces both leaders into a shaky alliance, one wherein every decision they make not only has political but personal, life-and-death ramifications. Jones commands the screen as a leader forced to balance duty with her personal desperation, while Delpy, Corey Mylchreest, and an impressive supporting cast bring their own depth to the burgeoning international crisis. There's an especially chilling moment in the trailer when one of the hostages asks a masked terrorist to have mercy on them because they have families. To which the terrorist coldly replies: "So did I." Adds Jones, in her own Tudum interview about the British leader in "Hostage": "She is put in such extreme circumstances, and we see that when push comes to shove she puts her country over her family. The original, working title for the series was 'The Choice,' and that's why." Read the original article on BGR. Solve the daily Crossword
