'Missed out badly': Ricky Ponting and co called out over 'mind-boggling' mistake

Yahoo2 days ago
South African cricket legend AB de Villiers has questioned why one of the IPL teams - including Ricky Ponting's Punjab Kings - didn't recognise Dewald Brevis' talent and pick him up in the tournament's auction. On Tuesday night, the 22-year-old Brevis made the highest score by a South African in a T20 international, leading the Proteas to a 53-run victory over Australia.
Brevis scored 125 not out from just 56 balls, blasting 12 fours and eight sixes. His mammoth score propelled South Africa to an imposing total of 7-218, before Australia made just 165 in response.
Brevis reached triple figures in just 41 balls - the second-fastest century by a South African in T20 history. It was his first hundred in international cricket, eclipsing Faf du Plessis' record of 119 for highest score by a South African. His previous high score in T20 internationals was just 41.
"I think that's just my natural way of hitting," Brevis said after scoring 96 of his runs in boundaries. "I've hit 1000s of balls, and I just want to go out there, enjoy it and have fun. Yeah, just watch it (the ball). And then if it's there, it happens."
AB de Villiers calls out IPL teams' mistake
Taking to social media after the game, South African legend de Villiers expressed his shock that Brevis wasn't picked up in the last IPL auction. He was overlooked by every franchise - including the Ponting-coached Punjab Kings - before being signed by Chennai Super Kings as an injury replacement.
"There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction!," de Villiers wrote on social media. "Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play."
He added: "Mind-boggling that he wasn't picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub."
Mind boggling that he wasn't picked up at all! To think that he came in as an injury sub🤷‍♂️😄

I bit of both. IPL scouts didn't watch how much he had improved in terms of both technique and his hitting ability after IPL 2024. I still remember Ambani's reaction when Brevis's name was called during this mega auction.

Dewald Brevis shows IPL franchises what they missed
Brevis played six games for Chennai after being picked up late in the tournament, scoring 225 runs at an average of 37.50 with a strike-rate of 180. He previously played 10 games for Mumbai Indians across the 2022 and 2024 tournaments, averaging 23 with a strike-rate in the high 120s.
Across his entire T20 career, he's scored 2438 runs with a strike-rate of 154. But it wasn't enough for Ponting or another IPL team to pick him up in the auction.

On Tuesday night in Darwin he unleashed a number of massive hits, dominating a partnership of 126 in 9.3 overs with the subdued Tristan Stubbs. His batting partner only added 31 in 22 balls as the anchorman. Their 100-run stand came up in just 44 balls, with Stubbs only contributing 16.
"Just when I reached that century, the most important thing for me it wasn't me. It's all God," he said. "I give it all to him, all the glory, and he blessed me with a talent to play like that. That's the first person I gave all the glory to. It was fun to just be in that moment. It was a special moment."
South Africa's win levelled the three-match series at 1-1 and ended Australia's record nine-game winning streak in the format. The deciding match will be played in Cairns on Saturday before a three-match one-day series between the teams in Cairns and Mackay.

O'Connor at No.10 as Wallabies suffer more injury woe

Veteran James O'Connor has been called on to take on the playmaking duties as the Wallabies seek to build on the impetus of their Lions' third-Test win with a rare victory in South Africa at the start of the Rugby Championship. But a plan for the 35-year-old O'Connor, back in the green and gold after three years, to share the No.10 role has had to be shelved after Ben Donaldson went down injured in training on Thursday. The idea had been for O'Connor to play the first 40 minutes with Donaldson coming on after the break but the injury has left the Wallabies looking at risky alternatives in the playmaking department as they get set to face the world champions in Johannesburg on Saturday (Sunday AEST). "In the second to last play of the training, 'Donno' kicked the ball and pulled up short so we don't know what the extent of the injury is," coach Joe Schmidt revealed after naming the team. "We've only been back from training for about an hour so he will get a scan now and we'll have a definitive picture because we need to know for next week as well whether we need more cover. "Nic White can cover No.10 and is astute enough to do so, Andrew Kellaway has the skill set as well if we go with what we've got at the moment." The inclusion of the 35-year-old O'Connor at No.10 is the only change to the starting XV that defeated the British & Irish Lions 22-12 in Sydney a fortnight ago, as he comes into the side after Tom Lynagh suffered a concussion in that encouraging victory. O'Connor, who helped New Zealand outfit Crusaders win the Super Rugby title this season, hasn't played for the Wallabies since 2022 but still looks the safest pair of hands after all the fly-half woes Schmidt has had to contend with, what with first-choice Noah Lolesio also out with neck trouble. O'Connor's halfback partner will be another veteran, White, who has doubled back on his decision to retire after the Lions series when first choice Jake Gordon got injured. That means Australia will go from a five-three to six-two split between forwards and backs among the replacements. Yet Schmidt sounded upbeat as he noted: "The group has had a good week of preparation, adjusting pretty well to the time zone and the altitude well here in Johannesburg. "There's not many bigger Tests than playing South Africa on their home turf and we know we're going to need to be at our best on Saturday night." Australia are seeking their first win at Ellis Park since 1963, when they beat South Africa 11-9. Goal No.1 for pick No.2, Havana Harris ☀️#AFLWEaglesSuns — AFL Women's (@aflwomens) August 14, 2025 West Coast dominated the first quarter thanks to the efforts of Roberts, who kicked her first goal from a holding-the-ball free kick. She followed it up with a flying 45m shot on the run that was touched on the line, but soon had her second goal via a dribbling effort to give West Coast a 13-2 advantage at the break. The only down-side for the Eagles was a game-ending footy injury to defender Beth Schilling. Roberts was restricted to four disposals in the second quarter as the Suns clamped down on the star midfielder, with neither side able to score a goal. Gold Coast finally scored their first goal of the match early in the third term when Georgia Clayden converted her close-range set shot. The margin was just three points at the time, but Painter turned the game on its head with a three-goal burst. Her first goal came courtesy of a holding free kick, and her second was a smart left-foot snap after dropping a mark. PAINTER'S GOT THREE IN A QUARTER!#AFLWEaglesSuns — AFL Women's (@aflwomens) August 14, 2025 Painter's third goal came from a thing of beauty - a high floating mark in a pack of four players. By the time Painter had weaved her magic, Gold Coast trailed by 21 points at the final change. Harris tried her best to catapult the Suns back into the match, but West Coast's tough tackling and calmness under pressure ensured the home side got over the line.
