Wealthy Georgia wife arrested for drunkenly killing husband in shocking golf cart accident

Daily Mail17 hours ago
A wealthy Georgia wife was arrested for drunkenly driving a golf cart, leading to her husband's death in a shocking accident.
Cynthia Mackin, 62, was behind the wheel of a golf cart at Astor Creek Golf and Country Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on Saturday evening when her 59-year-old husband, Daniel Mackin, fell from the back rail and landed head-first on the sidewalk.
According to investigators, Daniel lost his grip and struck his head on the concrete as the cart traveled along a sidewalk on Southwest Astor Creek Parkway near Southwest Shinnecock Drive.
He was rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital - 11 miles from the course - where he later died.
'Operator was consuming alcohol, the passenger even more,' Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk told WPTV.
'It was just an unsafe situation,' he continued, adding that the affluent couple had been playing golf when the incident occurred.
Following the tragedy, police launched a DUI investigation and arrested the well-off wife for driving under the influence.
Cynthia, a native of Greensboro, Georgia, was then taken to the St. Lucie County Jail and later released on a $500 bond.
'It's a tragic situation her husband passed,' Niemczyk said, adding that it was 'necessary' to arrest the intoxicated wife.
'Unfortunately, it was necessary to make the arrest at that time, because her BAC had to be captured, and a breathalyzer had to be performed,' he explained.
Niemczyk also emphasized the importance of driving sober.
'You have to have a designated driver,' he said.
'The person that's going to be operating the golf cart has to be sober, and they have to be aware, and they're responsible for their passenger.'
Police said the investigation remains ongoing and will be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office to determine if additional charges will be filed.
During the investigation, 37-year-old, former professional baseball player, Justis 'Logan' Morrison interfered with officers and refused instructions to move back, according to NBC Miami.
He was arrested for obstruction, taken to the St. Lucie County Jail, and later released on a $500 bond.
Kenneth Sower Jr., who was at the course when the tragic accident occurred, expressed his disbelief over the situation.
'It's a sad situation,' Sower said, adding that the tragedy could have been prevented.
'They preach that when you get the golf cart, you're not supposed to get on the back. Just ride it in the front.'

Democratic lawmakers denied entry to ‘Alligator Alcatraz' immigration jail

A group of Florida lawmakers were denied entry on Thursday into the new Florida-based immigration jail dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz' one day after the first immigrant detainees began to arrive. Five Democratic lawmakers attempted to enter the facility, which was previously toured on Tuesday by White House officials, but were stopped by law enforcement officers from local agencies, according to the state representative Anna Eskamani in an interview with CNN. 'This is a blatant abuse of power and an attempt to conceal human rights violations from the public eye,' the five said in a joint statement. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the first detentions at the facility began on Wednesday, but did not respond to questions regarding the number of people detained so far. The controversial Everglades jail was quickly set up in a partnership between the federal and Florida state governments. Sitting approximately 50 miles (80km) west of Miami, the remote facility is managed by the state but in large part funded the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema). 'It might be as good as the real Alcatraz. A little controversial, but I couldn't care less,' Trump said on Tuesday after touring the site. During the tour, Trump joked about immigrants being pursued by snakes and alligators if they attempted to escape. Since Trump took office, Florida has been assisting the administration's goals in rounding up a large number of immigrants to be detained and deported. Through a program called 287(g), local law enforcement agencies partner with DHS and become deputized to carry out immigration enforcement operations. According to the state government, Florida has more 287(g) deputizations than any other state in the US, which has allowed it to engage in widespread operations targeting immigrant communities. 'You'll have a lot of people that will deport on their own because they don't want to end up in an Alligator Alcatraz, or some of these other places,' Florida governor Ron DeSantis said after touring the facility with Trump. 'This is a model, but we need other states to step up.' Being undocumented in the US is not a crime; rather, it is a civil offense. Data analysis by the Guardian shows that there has been a dramatic nationwide increase in the arrest of undocumented immigrants with no criminal record. The White House has pressured immigration officials to arrest 3,000 people per day, with the reported goal of reaching one million a year. Two non-profit groups have sued DHS, claiming the site's buildup is violating environmental policies. DHS said it expects the facility to expand quickly to 5,000 beds.

Teacher's aide accused of having sex with teen student in car outside Upstate New York school

A teacher's aide in Upstate New York had sex with a teenage student in her car, which was parked outside the school, according to bombshell court filings reviewed by The Independent. Between 2024 and 2025, the aide, who is identified only by her first name in the filings, 'engaged in sexually charged physical interactions' with the unidentified boy, beginning with 'sexually explicit communications and… sexually explicit media,' and progressing to 'sexually charged physical interactions… in various places within the subject school,' according to a complaint filed June 30 by the boy's mother. This included, the complaint alleges, 'kissing in and around' Cohoes High School until the winter of 2025, when the aide 'engaged in oral sex with [the student], multiple times in [her] car within the subject school.' 'Then, in February of 2025, [the aide] engaged in sexual intercourse with [the student] in [her] car within the… school,' the complaint states. The filing sheds new light on a situation that roiled the city of Cohoes, which is located about 150 miles north of New York City. On March 20, Cohoes City School District Superintendent Peggy O'Shea sent a letter to parents regarding allegations of 'inappropriate conduct' by the aide. 'Upon becoming aware of these allegations, administration immediately contacted the Cohoes Police Department,' O'Shea wrote. 'Since that time the District has been fully cooperating with law enforcement.' Due to the ongoing investigation, O'Shea said she was unable to share further details at the time. The full name of the aide, 19-year-old Alexsandra Morales, was identified by News10. She is now facing a pair of criminal misdemeanor charges: sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child. According to the complaint, the situation was discovered on March 18 by the teen's mom. Morales was arrested on March 20, News10 reported. The student involved was 15 at the time of the alleged abuse and was too young to legally consent, according to police. Cohoes Police Chief Todd Waldin told News10 that his department pursued felony charges against Morales, but that they were precluded from doing so by the state penal code because the age difference between Morales and the student was less than four years. The lawsuit, which was brought under the New York Child Victims Act, accuses the school district of negligent hiring, training, and supervision, as well as failing to remove the employee from the school despite notice of reported misconduct. It further claims that the administration 'knew or should have known about the subject pattern of abuse and should have prevented or stopped it,' and that it 'allowed for these violent and deviant incidents to occur on a regular and repeating basis, despite having notice of their occurrence.' 'Each instance of [Morales'] sexual misconduct and inappropriate physical contact with [the teen] constitutes battery,' the student's mother's complaint says. As a result, the complaint contends the student 'suffered… severe injuries and damages… including but not limited to, mental and emotional distress.' The lawsuit seeks damages to be determined in court. Morales is due back in Cohoes City Court on July 23.

A mother and daughter, six, have been killed in a horror crash involving a car and a van in Co Donegal. They have been named locally as Natalie McLaughlin and daughter, Ella. Ella died in the collision, which occurred on the R240 at Glentogher, Carndonagh, on Wednesday evening. Her mother, aged in her 20s, was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry following the crash and was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, where she died on Thursday evening. A man in his 30s and another girl, who was a rear seat passenger in the car, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at hospitals in Northern Ireland. SDLP Foyle MLA Mark Durkan said that Ms McLaughlin was 'well known and respected in the area'. In a social media post alongside a photograph of the mother and daughter, he said: 'This is the beautiful young mum and daughter, Natalie and Ella McLaughlin, who were tragically killed in a collision near their home in Carndonagh on Wednesday night. 'Natalie was a nurse in a local doctor's surgery and was well known and respected in the area. 'Wee Ella was just six. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected by this terrible tragedy.' Fianna Fail councillor Martin McDermott told the BBC that people locally were finding it difficult to 'comprehend what has happened'. He said: 'This is a young mother and a young child, it has a real effect on people, on the community, people just don't know what to say. 'Everybody's life in that circle is changed forevermore.' He added: 'It has been very, very difficult over the last couple of days, it will be difficult over the next number of days, over the weeks and months ahead particularly for the families involved.' An Garda Siochana is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
