What number will Abdul Carter wear with NY Giants? Phil Simms tells us his thoughts

Abdul Carter was denied by one New York Giants legend in his pursuit of what number he wants to wear in the NFL.
The Giants' first-round pick may be ready to accept an offer from another.
After Lawrence Taylor rebuffed Carter's request to bring his iconic No. 56 out of retirement, Phil Simms has thrown No. 11 into the ring - piquing the interest of the Giants' third overall pick in the process.

"It would be an HONOR," Carter wrote on social media Friday morning, in response to a video during which Simms, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback and one of the greatest players in franchise history, suggested that he would not take issue with having either Carter or quarterback Jaxson Dart donning his No. 11.
Carter wore No. 11 at Penn State. Simms' No. 11 was retired by the Giants in 1995.
"I had some fun with it, and the fact that he said it'd be honor to wear, that's just him being really nice," Simms told NorthJersey.com and The Record. "Man, it'll make me re-live my days of being an outside linebacker in high school. Truly, I can't wait to see him practice. I was hoping the Giants would get him. He's gonna fit in right away with the Giants culture."

Simms was asked directly for his reaction if Dart - who wore No. 2 at Ole Miss - wanted to wear No. 11.

"Hey look, I told some of my friends and people around me, I'd let him have it in a second," Simms said in an interview with FanDuel TV. "Can you just help it a little and make it better or whatever? I think it'd be a lot of fun and it wouldn't bother me."
But when the conversation turned to Carter, Simms was taken aback to learn that the former Penn State star was so in tune to the possibilities. Simms said his family and agent might take issue with any decision to let someone else wear No. 11.
"I'm anxious to see or hear my children's thought about this," Simms said, referring to his sons Chris and Matt and daughter Deirdre. "What I've learned in my life - well, even when I played to a degree, they were big fans - is that they have an opinion on everything about me. So, I'll hear it from them, and it'll be yes or no. And if they say no, it'll really be like, 'No way!'"

The Giants unretired Ray Flaherty's No. 1 last year with the blessing of his family to allow star wide receiver Malik Nabers to wear it. When the Giants retired No. 1 following the 1935 season, it was the first time a professional football team had ever retired a player's jersey number.

By adding Carter to this defense, the Giants have created an identity with All-Pro Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux already up front. Carter, 21, plays with aggression and he's really good with his hands. This was his first year playing defensive end and on the edge, so there's no telling how good he can be with more experience at the position. His combination of athletic traits, explosiveness and potential upside is off the charts.
"He's a great kid, and he's an exceptional player," Giants coach Brian Daboll on Carter. "He's got great quickness, bend, he's hard to block. He played off the ball the year before, and he has some instincts in that area, as well, smart. Fun guy to evaluate."

Brian Burns, Shane Bowen Hint at Giants' Plans for Abdul Carter

Brian Burns, Shane Bowen Hint at Giants' Plans for Abdul Carter originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Giants, for once, have found a problem they are happy to solve. Trading for edge rusher Brian Burns ahead of the 2024 season and pairing him with first-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux made for an explosive Giants pass rush. Only eight teams finished with more sacks, but general manager Joe Schoen added even more firepower to the unit. Advertisement With the third pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, New York drafted blue-chip edge rusher Abdul Carter, arguably the best player in the class. The result is one of the league's best crops of edge rushers, and combined with defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, one of the most talented units in the sport. This pass rush is the backbone of the team's hopes. Subsequently, optimizing three players for two spots is going to be defensive coordinator Shane Bowen's most important task this summer. During minicamp, the Giants hinted at their creative plans to unleash Carter on opposing offenses. 'Ultimately, we want to get our best 11 on the field, whatever way we got to maneuver to do that,' Bowen said, via team transcript. 'We got to find ways to get the guys that can impact the game on the field. Advertisement 'So there is some versatility there. With Abdul, he did a little bit of that stuff off the ball in college early in his career, so there is some versatility there and some versatility with what we could potentially do with Burns as well.' Carter has just a year of experience as a full-time edge rusher, playing off-ball linebacker for much of his Penn State tenure. That skill set earned him comparisons to his predecessor, Dallas Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons. In the same way that Parsons takes occasional snaps in the box, Carter could see extra playing time. Mugging the A-gap can get him favorable matchups on centers who aren't equipped to take on dynamos off the edge. More frequently, the Giants seem poised to use Carter (and perhaps both Burns and Thibodeaux) as the defensive tackle next to Lawrence. Used on passing downs, this gives extra potency to potential stunts and gets the team's four best pass rushers on the field at the same time. Advertisement 'Yeah, very, I mean, because you could do a lot,' Burns said. 'I mean, we're all similar but different in a way. You know what I'm saying? So, we can interchange and we can really add a lot of versatility to any of our third-down packages or just the game in general. So, yeah, it's exciting.' The pass-rush synergy that comes with an All-Pro defensive tackle, a Pro Bowler in Burns, and two other first-round picks is hard to fathom and nearly as hard to game plan against. Teams can't double-team all of them, and New York can comfortably send four to generate pressure. Burns summarized the Giants' surplus aptly. 'It's kind of like pick your poison. And then we have a Dex, so…' Related: Edge Rusher Rankings Set High Bar for Giants Related: Carter Reacts to Joining Giants' Loaded Line This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 12, 2025, where it first appeared.

Giants' Matt Chapman to start rehab for sprained hand in a week

LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman can begin rehabbing his sprained right hand in a week. He visited Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Friday and was told he has to wear his splint until then, the team announced. The Giants were in town to open a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Chapman got hurt sliding into first base against Atlanta last Sunday. He went on the injured list two days later and is eligible to return on June 20. The 32-year-old infielder indicated he could be on a faster track. Melvin added that until Chapman starts rehabbing, it's tough to forecast a return date. Chapman was batting .243 with 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and seven stolen bases. The five-time Gold Glove winner signed a $151 million, six-year deal last year.

There's A Lot to Like About Cadillac's Chances to Win 24 Hours of Le Mans

After its four teams advanced to Hyperpole, Cadillac locked up the front row in qualifying for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There's only one goal left for the American manufacturer. Can Cadillac win the 93rd running of the world's most famous sports car race? The odds look better than any of the first two years that Cadillac V-Series.R teams have raced at Le Mans with their LMDh hybrids against the dominant LMH hybrids of Ferrari and Toyota. This year, a Cadillac was either first or second in the first three practices and in the qualifying sessions. The key is avoiding major errors, said Gary Nelson, the team manager for the No. 311 V-Series.R of Action Express Racing that qualified eighth. 'The last two years, the big thing for us was making mistakes,' said Nelson. 'We're always trying to not repeat our mistakes and hopefully we don't come up with some new ones. Then we'll see where the cards fall.' The British Jota team and its pole-winning No. 12 driven by Alex Lynn and the runner-up No. 38 of Earl Bamber contested the first three rounds of the World Endurance Championship as newcomers to Cadillac, having replaced Chip Ganassi Racing as the factory representative for the GM brand. Entering the Test Day, Jota relied on the massive compilation of digital records from Action Express's previous two trips to Le Mans. Last year, Jota won at Spa with its Porsche 963, the only privateer team to have won a Hypercar race in the WEC. With seventh on the grid its best showing, the Ferrari crews of AF Corse, winners of the first three WEC rounds and the last two Le Mans 24-hours, appeared to be focused on race preparation. The new Balance of Performance (BoP) has dictated compensating for a loss of top speed. According to drivers, the search for lap times has played havoc with the 499P's race set-up. But, throwing down a gauntlet, the Ferraris were first and second in the final night practice. Toyota Gazoo Racing also appeared to be focused on consistent race pace in place of qualifying. After the No. 7 GR010 Hybrid surprisingly missed the Top 15 in the first round, the No. 8 managed only 10th in the final round. Qualifying lasts for just one flying lap on low fuel and fresh Michelins. The grueling race is another matter. 'The hard work really starts (once qualifying ends),' said Will Stevens, co-driver in the No. 12 Cadillac. 'It's a long road ahead but after qualifying we're pretty confident.' If the new BoP has indeed brought the LMH cars of Ferrari and Toyota back to the field, it means Cadillac, including the Wayne Taylor Racing entry that starts 14th, will have plenty of competition from the fellow LMDh-based cars of Alpine, BMW and Porsche. Porsche Penske Motorsport will be in its third season of a three-car entry. But it has not been Penske perfect with the No. 6 Porsche 963 being banished to the back of the field for being underweight in qualifying. Before Mathieu Jaminet qualified his No. 5 Porsche third, a wheel came off on course. "We've had a busy and quite difficult few days, but qualifying has shown once again: When it comes down to it, our team is fully there," said Jonathan Diuguid, managing director of Porsche Penske. The No. 4 Porsche, where Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy will try to add a Le Mans victory to wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Sebring 12-Hour, starts fifth. Laurens Vanthoor, starting 21st in the No. 6, will also try to complete endurance racing's triple after co-driving with Nasr and Tandy in Daytona and Sebring. The BMW M Team WRT (fourth and sixth on the grid), and the Alpine Endurance Team (ninth and 12th) each gave Ferrari a run in the previous round at Spa and can be expected to challenge in the 24-hour, where fuel mileage, pit strategy and tire wear will be significant factors as well as track position and driving. Only the new Aston Martin Valkyrie and Peugeot's still struggling 9X8 are considered such long shots in a crowded field that they are out of the running.
