HP: Man gets 10-year rigorous imprisonment for smuggling charas

Last Updated: Bilaspur (HP), Jul 23 (PTI) A man from Chamba district has been sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and Rs 1 lakh fine in a charas smuggling case, a police official said on Wednesday. Mohit Bansal, Special Sub Judge of Bilaspur court, has pronounced Dinesh Kumar, son of Bhagat Ram from Shukra village in Chamba district, guilty in the 2023 case, the official said. He added that if the fine is not paid, the accused would have to serve an additional year in jail. According to the official, the case dated back to April 11, 2023, when a team of officers from the Sadar police station was conducting a routine check of vehicles at Lakhanpur. At around 2.30 pm, they signalled a white Alto car arriving from Bilaspur to stop. Growing suspicious of the driver's nervousness and over his inability to give clear answers when asked for documents, the police searched the car in the presence of three independent witnesses. They found a green carry bag under the driver's seat, inside which were 1.986 kilograms of charas wrapped in three plastic packets fastened with tapes. The case, pleaded by Additional District Prosecutor Abhay Gupta, proved Dinesh Kumar guilty by presenting thorough evidence as well as 16 witnesses, which subsequently led to his conviction. Nashik: Seven people, including three women, three men, and a two-year-old child, were killed in a road accident in Maharashtra's Nashik on Wednesday when their car collided with a motorcycle. The two individuals on the motorcycle sustained serious injuries. The car, an Alto, overturned into a drain beside the road, filling with water and leading to the drowning of its occupants. The incident occurred around midnight near a nursery close to Dindori town, with the injured now receiving treatment at Nashik District Hospital. According to the police, the car, carrying seven passengers, was returning from a birthday celebration for a relative's son in Nashik city when it collided with a motorcycle, a Yamaha MT-15, carrying two riders. The force of the impact caused the car to veer off the road and overturn into a small canal running parallel to the road. The canal, filled with water, quickly flooded the overturned vehicle. Trapped inside, the occupants were unable to escape, leading to their deaths by drowning. The motorcycle riders, though seriously injured, survived the crash and were rescued from the scene.
