Surat jeweller booked for duping South Mumbai diamond merchant of Rs 1.81 crore
The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police on Wednesday booked a Surat-based jeweller for allegedly cheating a South Mumbai-based diamond merchant of Rs 1.81 crore. The suspect has been identified as Rajeshkumar Sharma, 50, proprietor of Krishna Jewellers in Surat, and his firm has been in the diamond business for the past three years, the police said on Thursday. According to the police, Sharma was the client of the complainant, Rajesh Vithani, who runs a company in Bharat Diamond Bourse in BKC, Bandra (East), dealing with the purchase and sale of diamonds. Vithani is in the business of giving the precious stones to traders, dealers, and brokers in the diamond market on a receipt. The suspect won the confidence of Vithani, since Sharma's firm had bought diamonds from the complainant in the past, the police said. Sharma had contacted Vithani's office in March and said that he had a reputed client interested in purchasing high-quality diamonds. Based on his previous business relation with Sharma, Vithani supplied him two consignments of cut and polished natural diamonds, weighing 444.86 carats worth Rs 1.31 crore, and a second consignment of 475.82 carats worth Rs 49.9 lakh. Sharma had signed the receipt in the presence of the complainant under the promise that he would make the payment in 15 days. In his complaint, Vithani stated that when he contacted Sharma after two weeks, he claimed that he had met with an accident and was undergoing an operation, and required more time to pay the amount. After a month, Sharma gave another excuse that his daughter had undergone a heart operation and that he would complete the payment soon, said an officer. Later, when the complainant tried to contact Sharma, his number was initially found switched off and then out of service, the police said.

2 Indian Nationals Arrested For Illegal Border Crossing Near Maine, US
Last Updated: Two Indian nationals were arrested near Bridgewater, Maine, on August 1 for illegally crossing the US border. The identity of the individuals was not disclosed. Two Indian nationals were arrested near Bridgewater, Maine, in the United States, while attempting to cross the international border illegally, multiple reports stated. The two were taken into custody on August 1 and were placed into removal proceedings. Local media quoted officials as saying that the apprehensions were 'unique" as the Border Patrol agents in Maine have only encountered 15 Indian nationals in the previous three fiscal years. 'The illegal aliens face prosecution under 8 US Code § 1325 and will also be placed into removal proceedings," officials said. 'These apprehensions are unique in that Border Patrol agents in Maine have only encountered 15 Indian nationals in the previous three fiscal years," they added. 'While the US Border Patrol is experiencing record-breaking low numbers of illegal crossings, some individuals still attempt to violate our laws," the report quoted Houlton Sector acting chief patrol agent Craig Shepley as saying. 'If you cross our borders illegally, you will be apprehended, prosecuted and deported back to your country of origin," he added. The report also claimed that the US Customs and Border Protection is now offering a voluntary, incentivised process for individuals illegally present in the United States to return to their home country or another country that will accept them. On August 2, a federal judge ruled against Donald Trump's administration's plans to end protections from deportation for citizens of Nepal, Nicaragua and Honduras, barring their removal while the case continues. San Francisco-based US District Judge Trina Thompson agreed the plaintiffs had shown there was sufficient racial animus behind the decision and that the Trump administration had failed to undertake an 'objective review of the country conditions" before ending protections. AP HC declines plea for central probe into YSRCP-era scams; questions PIL's intent
VIJAYAWADA: The High Court on Wednesday refused to order a central agency investigation into the alleged irregularities during the previous YSRCP government, based on white papers released by the coalition government. The court questioned the intent behind the PIL, filed by Delhi-based lawyer Mehak Maheshwari. The matter was adjourned to February 11, 2026. Maheshwari had sought a probe into alleged scams and financial losses under former CM YS Jagan, as outlined in the white papers. He also requested the formation of a SIT headed by a retired judge to oversee the probe by the CBI, ED, and the Income Tax Department. The bench grilled the petitioner on the credibility of his claims, noting that the State had already constituted an SIT. 'What evidence do you have to say the SIT isn't investigating properly?' the court asked, adding that ordering a CBI probe based solely on white papers was unjustified and contrary to Supreme Court guidelines. Maheshwari argued that the SIT lacked central agency officials and had only investigated a liquor scam so far, without naming Jagan among the accused. However, he admitted uncertainty about the SIT's intent and the authenticity of the alleged corruption. Special Government Pleader Singamaneni Pranati informed the court that an SIT was in place and requested time to submit detailed reports.
