Mohamed Salah calls out Uefa over tribute to ‘Palestinian Pele' killed in Gaza

Times5 days ago
The Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has criticised Uefa's tribute to a player known as the 'Palestinian Pelé' after European football's governing body failed to make any reference to the circumstances of his death this week.
The Palestine Football Association (PFA) said that Suleiman al-Obeid, 41, was killed by an Israeli strike targeting civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
In a brief post on the social media platform X, Uefa called the former national team member 'a talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times'.
Salah shared the post with the comment: 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?'
Salah, 33, has previously called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza.
Gary Lineker, the former Match of the Day host who was sacked by the BBC after he was forced to apologise for reposting an antisemitic trope in relation to the Gaza conflict, shared Salah's message before adding: 'We can't hear you Uefa.'
Al-Obeid was born in Gaza in 1984 and played 24 games for the Palestinian national team after making his debut in 2007.
The statement from the PFA said that armed personnel 'targeted people waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip'.
A former star of the Khadamat al-Shati club in Gaza, the midfielder also played for the Al-Amari Youth Center Club in the West Bank.
'During his long career, Al-Obeid scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football,' the PFA added.
Al-Obeid was married and had five children.
Since the start of the war in Gaza — triggered by the Palestinian militant group Hamas's attack on Israel in October 2023 — 662 people from the sport and scouting sector have been killed, including 321 in the football community, according to the PFA.
Uefa has declined to comment.

Shedeur Sanders' mom steals spotlight again in latest NFL appearance... days after being slammed for 'embarrassing' behavior

Just days after stealing the headlines at her son Shedeur's NFL debut for the Cleveland Browns, Pilar Sanders has returned to the sport - this time for her other son Shilo. The brothers have both landed in the NFL after playing college ball together at Colorado - coached by their father Deion - last season. And it appears their mom will be very busy this season as she travels across the country to take in both of their fledgling careers - with plenty of social media posts to boot. After she was slammed by some for her 'embarrassing' sideline behavior at Shedeur's game last weekend, she returned to the spotlight in a custom dress with Shilo's face on for his Tampa Bay Buccaneers debut. Posting on social media, she wrote: 'First NFL Game and Yep @shilosanders brangs that BOOM Everytime! #proudmom #tampabaybuccaneers #shilosanders #28' In a series of videos and photos, the 50-year-old - who is separated from the NFL stars' father Deion - showed off her red outfit and vlogged her experience at the game. Last week, she was ripped by Browns fans after traveling to watch Shedeur - fourth-choice quarterback - make his own first appearance in the pro game. She watched on from the sidelines on the day and, after the game, shared a video of herself celebrating the occasion. The caption read: 'Aaaaaand you know itttt!!! Momma's always present!' Some fans, however, were not impressed by Pilar's actions and swiftly made their feelings known by responding in the comments to her Instagram post. One fan wrote: 'I would be embarrassed if my 60-year-old mom conducted herself like that'. For clarity, Pilar Sanders is 50. 'She acted like a kid,' another said. Meanwhile one user brutally commented: 'She is so annoying'. One fan, however, did leave a lengthy comment. They said: 'But as a mother pulling up to my son's games, I would conduct myself differently. This is young woman behavior. You are so fine. Pilar received some heat online for her behavior at Shedeur's game last weekend Shedeur is fourth-choice quarterback at Cleveland and is battling to make the final roster 'You dont have to be posting pic licking your teeth and wiggling. Im not hating at all, but her sons are so respectful and respected by many in the world, that she should just carry herself showing more class'. Fans were left stunned by Sanders balling out on his debut in the NFL, with one even calling it 'history-making', and another claiming he has 'proven his doubters wrong'. Shilo also enjoyed a productive debut, and has turned himself into a fans' favorite in Tampa Bay in a very short space of time. It is as yet unclear whether he will make the final roster ahead of the season, but he is being tipped to be picked up elsewhere should he fall short in Tampa Bay.

How Arne Slot created another monster at Liverpool: Why he completely revamped the squad this summer, what he has demanded from his players and the injury 'luck' that's actually something entirely different

Straight after Arne Slot 's first season at Feyenoord, 16 players left the club. Some for pastures which they viewed as greener grass, some because the club knew their place in the food chain and needed to sell their best assets, some turfed out by Slot simply because they were not good enough.

Five-time Pro-Bowler Brandon Scherff secretly retires from the NFL at age of just 33 after earning $111m

Former All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff has quietly retired from the NFL after earning $111million in an impressive 10 years in the professional game. Scherff, who played the last three of his 10 NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, has not officially confirmed to the media - or his fans - that he has hung up his cleats. But an article this month about Scherff's induction into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame on the Hawkeyes' website referred to him as 'having retired from playing this summer.' The Iowa native became a free agent in March but had not signed with a team, and NFL insiders have now confirmed that he has indeed called a day on his playing career. 'It's been something I could never dream of,' Scherff said in the article about playing professional football. 'Sometimes I would tell my wife that she has to pinch me, because I'm playing a kid's game, and being able to do it as a job is pretty amazing. Now, having kids and being able to see them after games is absolutely wonderful. 'So I would say it's a dream come true. And I will be forever grateful to have had that chance.' Washington selected Scherff with the fifth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. Scherff started all 140 regular-season games that he played for Washington (2015-21) and Jacksonville (2022-24), as well as four total playoff games. Scherff was selected first-team All-Pro in 2020, as well as to five Pro Bowls (2016-17, 2019-21) and to the 2015 NFL All-Rookie team. In his final season at Iowa in 2014, Scherff was the Outland Trophy winner, a first-team All-American and the Big Ten's Offensive Lineman of the Year.
