TENDERLOIN — Japanese and Filipino restaurant Ox & Tiger is back. At first, the buzzy Jones Street restaurant will offer three-course prix fixe menus on Sundays and Mondays with reservations available on Tock. In an Instagram post, owners EJ Macayan and Hitomi Wada write they took time off to welcome their child Mamushi. Macayan cut his teeth at Rich Table prior to his pop-up gone restaurant.
HAYES VALLEY — Happy Crane lives in the former Monsieur Benjamin as of Friday, August 8, marking one of the city's most-hyped debuts. The upscale Gough Street restaurant aims to be a destination for fine dining Chinese-style dishes. Self-trained chef James Yeun Leong Parry made sure to include a spruced-up riff on sesame balls, too, made to look like a Ferrero Rocher.
MISSION — After 17 years, Adriano Paganini's Beretta on Valencia Street got a fresh look and reopening on Sunday, August 3. There's a new Italian retro-modern look and a suite of stuzzichini and antipasti from longtime chef Fredy Lopez.
NOE VALLEY — Ingredients opened quietly on Noe Street during the last week of July. The restaurant comes from chef Shuk Dev Tamang who cut his teeth at the Expansion Culinary Institute in Kathmandu. Head here for a variety of dishes including half-roasted chicken and Australian-inspired racks of lamb.
OAKLAND — The Temescal District plays host to the second location of Korean restaurant Mugunghwa. It opened in late June, per the Mercury News, and is a minimal aesthetic hotspot for grilled meats and fried rice.
SAN RAFAEL — Chef Jun Takeda's Japanese restaurant MaruJun opened with Kyushu home-style dishes and Edo-mae sushi techniques, per an email release from the business. The restaurant quietly opened in early April 2025.
CAMPBELL — Bay Area Detroit-style pizza parlor boomtown business Square Pie Guys has gone south. Tuesday, August 5 marked opening day for the business's first South Bay outpost. This marks the fourth location and this one comes with a SPG soda fountain! There'll be burgers, too, a throwback for longtime fans.
YOUNTVILLE — Chef Rebecca Weitzman's Clementine opens on Thursday, August 14 with a big ol' summer-friendly patio. The main attraction though are fruity margaritas and dishes straight off the wood-fired grill.

Grief is complicated. When the person you're grieving is an ex-partner or someone you had an otherwise difficult relationship with, it can be even more complicated. Right now, Kelly Clarkson is dealing with the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock. She and Blackstock, who share two children, made headlines over the years for their acrimonious divorce. In an interview with USA TODAY in 2023, Clarkson described the anger she felt from their split. On Wednesday, Aug., 6, Clarkson announced she'd be stepping away from her Las Vegas residency amid Blackstock's illness. The next day, Blackstock's family released a statement announcing he died at age 48 after having "bravely battled cancer for more than three years." Mental health experts say this news is an important reminder about the complex nature of grief. When someone you had a bad falling out with dies, it's crucial to understand that contradictory feelings are normal − and people's experiences are going to vary. "You can hold two ideas at the same time," psychotherapist Stephanie Sarkis says. "One is, 'The way they treated me was not OK.' And also, 'I can feel sad for my kids that their father died at such a young age.' You could even feel sad because I wish he would've been a different person." Kelly Clarkson and grieving someone who caused you pain Blackstock was the first-ever "American Idol" winner's longtime manager. The two tied the knot in October 2013 and finalized their divorce in March 2022. The details of their divorce repeatedly made headlines until its settlement. Clarkson was awarded primary custody of their children − daughter River Rose, 11, and son Remy Alexander, 9 − in November 2020. Blackstock also had another son Seth and daughter Savannah. In 2023, Clarkson addressed her divorce from Blackstock in an interview with USA TODAY, speaking about her "anger" stemming from their split. "I was very, very angry. I know a lot of people have gone through grief or a big tragedy like a divorce, and I know it's a common thing, unfortunately," Clarkson said. The shock of grief When someone dies unexpectedly, their loved ones' world shifts. Without warning. Without time to process. What's left is substantial trauma. Furthermore, behaviors around grief vary among individuals, communities and within family units. "How people grieve is influenced by the relationship they had with the person they lost, also what our religion taught us, what our culture taught us and what our family taught us," grief expert David Kessler previously told USA TODAY. Regret is another powerful emotion that often accompanies grief. "Even when the last interaction was positive, there can be regret that the last interaction may feel incomplete," Moore-Lobban said. So Noah Hawley, the creator and writer of the upcoming TV show " Alien: Earth," knew he had to conjure up some new monsters to match the horror of watching "Alien" for the first time, he told Business Insider in London. They include a strange eyeball with tentacles, which appears in one of the trailers. And I couldn't do that with a Xenomorph anymore," Hawley said. He approached the challenge of designing new creatures like a game. "You think about, well, what are the things that upset me the most? The bodily autonomy, parasites, all of it. And then you're doing an almost comedic game of what's the worst thing that could happen?" he said. "If they do enough disturbing things, then they become visually iconic, versus trying to make something that looks cool and then adding that in," he added. Hawley was also mindful of making sure the plentiful violence in the eight-episode series didn't become meaningless. Referring to the iconic chestburster scene in Alien, which director Ridley Scott famously didn't warn the cast how gory it would be, Hawley said: "I didn't work at a method level like that for the cast, but what I know at the heart of it is these deaths have to mean something. "And what makes them awful is not just the graphic nature of them, it's who they're happening to and the feelings that go around it." Good things come to those who wait, and for Hawley, horror is no different: "I feel like that horror is all about anticipation.
