Reform GLCs for Sabah's future, says UPKO's treasurer

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's government-linked companies (GLCs) must undergo bold and comprehensive reforms to serve the people and the state's long-term interests, says UPKO Treasurer-General Dennison R. Indang. He stressed that GLCs should drive economic growth, create jobs, empower local entrepreneurs, and contribute to state revenue. Advertisement However, he said, many GLCs have failed in their purpose due to political interference and poor governance, becoming financial burdens instead. Dennison called for a merit-based, professional approach in board appointments and transparent investment evaluations. Underperforming GLCs, he said, should be restructured or dissolved. He welcomed the formation of the Sabah GLC Monitoring Committee, viewing it as a vital step toward improving integrity, transparency, and accountability. Reform, he added, is not optional but essential for Sabah's economic strength and public trust. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Madius urges manpower boost for native land survey programme

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has called on the Sabah government to increase staffing for the Native Land Services Management Programme (PANTAS) under the Land and Survey Department (JTU). He noted a drop in manpower—from 60 to 40 in survey teams, and from 8 to 3 in documentation staff—hampering effective implementation. Advertisement This shortfall, he said, has prevented full utilization of the RM100 million federal allocation under the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021–2025), with only RM68 million spent so far. Speaking at a PANTAS dialogue in Kg. Lokos, Madius emphasized the programme's importance in issuing land grants to native Sabahans, which has benefited over 84,000 landowners across 484,025 acres since 2011. He stressed that without adequate staffing, ongoing efforts and federal support may go to waste. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Armenian PM pushes to unseat influential church head

YEREVAN: Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Tuesday urged followers of the influential Armenian Apostolic Church to help unseat its spiritual leader, Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II. Relations between Pashinyan and the church leadership have sharply deteriorated in recent years. Garegin II repeatedly called for Pashinyan's resignation following Armenia's disastrous military defeats to arch-foe Azerbaijan over the then-disputed Karabakh region. The loss of Karabakh after Azerbaijan's lightning offensive in 2023 has divided Armenia, as its neighbour demands sweeping concessions in exchange for lasting peace. Last year, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan led mass protests accusing Pashinyan of ceding territory to Azerbaijan -- a movement that ultimately failed to topple the prime minister. Now Pashinyan has launched an unprecedented challenge to Garegin II, urging believers on social media to form a 'coordination group' to organise the 'liberation' of the church and elect a new Catholicos. 'We need to create a coordination group to handle the organisational aspects of this agenda,' Pashinyan said on Telegram, specifying that members should be clergy and lay followers. Pashinyan and his wife in late May alleged that the Catholicos has a child which prompted fierce opposition criticism and calls for the couple's excommunication. Armenia -- the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion in the 4th century -- grants the Armenian Apostolic Church special constitutional status and the church wields considerable influence in Armenian society.
