Work on first phase of Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu road widening project to begin on June 16

The Hindu10-06-2025
Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas will inaugurate the work on the four-laning of the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road on June 16. In the first phase, the 5.32-km stretch from Mananchira to Malaparmba will be developed. The land acquired for the road development has already been handed over to Midland Contracting Pvt Ltd., which won the bid for the work.
Meanwhile, work on drainages has already begun at Mananchira where the road begins. The plan is to complete the drainage work before the road is laid. Works are carried out mostly at night to avoid traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters during day time.
The widening of the Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road is a long-pending dream of city commuters. The Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has been fighting a battle for over 15 years to realise the dream, as it seemed a distant one despite the allocation of funds from time to time.
The 8.4-km road is being developed under the City Road Improvement Project at an estimated cost of ₹481.94 crore. A total of ₹344.5 crore has already been sanctioned for land acquisition and administrative sanction of ₹137.44 crore has been given for road construction.
The first phase is being constructed at a cost of ₹79.90 crore. The road will be 24-metres wide with concrete drainages and will have two-metre wide footpath on both sides and a two-metre median on which streetlights will be installed. As many as 21 bus stops, seven bus bays, a foot overbridge near the Civil Station and traffic signals at junctions are also part of the project.
Meanwhile, the Mananchira- Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has demanded that tenders be floated for the remaining three-km stretch of the road from Malaparamba to Vellimadukunnu immediately. 'The State government has put the remaining work on the back burner as it is part of the National Highway 766 and hence is to be developed by the NHAI,' it said. However, the Committee said, the NHAI had not yet announced any plans to develop the stretch.

FASTag Annual Pass Crosses 5 Lakh Registrations In Four Days

The newly launched FASTag annual pass has crossed five lakh user registrations across the country in four days, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has said. Tamil Nadu led the largest number of annual passes purchased over the last four days, followed by Karnataka and Haryana, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. The maximum transactions through FASTag Annual Pass at the toll plazas were recorded in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. As of 7:00 pm on the first day of implementation on August 15, around 1.4 lakh users had purchased and activated the yearly pass, with approximately 1.39 lakh transactions registered at toll plazas, stated NHAI. In addition to this, the Rajmargyatra app, the official platform to purchase and activate the FASTag annual pass, has become the top-ranking government app on Google Play Store within four days of launch. The Rajmargyatra app is ranked 23rd on the Google Play Store overall and second in the Travel category, with over 15 lakh downloads and a 4.5-star rating. According to NHAI, around 20,000 to 25,000 people use the Rajmargyatra app at the same time. People who bought the annual FASTag pass get a message when they cross a toll plaza, the ministry said. The pass will allow up to 200 toll crossings or a year-long validity, whichever comes first. The cost of the pass is Rs 3,000, and when the validity or the toll limit expires, users can recharge it like any other prepaid card. Any non-commercial vehicle having a valid FASTag can use the pass, activated within two hours of a one-time charge payment made via the Rajmargyatra App or the NHAI website. The annual pass can be used at around 1,150 toll plazas across the country on national highways and expressways.

NHAI issues over 5 lakh FASTag annual toll passes, collects Rs 150 crore revenue

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sold over 5 lakh FASTag-based annual toll permits in just four days, collecting Rs 150 crore in revenue. Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of purchases of annual passes in four days, followed by Karnataka and Haryana. Further, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest number of transactions through FASTag annual passes at toll plazas, a statement by NHAI said. Private vehicles can now use an annual toll pass for free passage through toll plazas on national highways and expressways with each pass priced at Rs 3,000. Cars, jeeps, and vans can use this facility at toll plazas run by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The pass is valid for one year from activation or for 200 toll trips, whichever occurs first. When the limit is reached, the FASTag automatically switches to standard pay-per-trip mode. For point-based toll plazas, each one-way crossing counts as a trip, and a return counts as two. In closed or ticketed systems, a complete entry-to-exit journey counts as one trip. Some FASTags, especially those issued for new vehicles, may only be registered with the vehicle's chassis number. The Annual Pass cannot be activated on such FASTags and they should be updated to include the complete vehicle registration number. The pass is available for purchase via the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app, NHAI or MoRTH websites, or authorised FASTag issuer portals. Payment for the pass (Rs 3,000) can be made via UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking. FASTag wallet balances cannot be used for this purpose. Activation is usually completed within two hours and confirmed by SMS. The average toll for a passenger vehicle is about Rs 50. Completing 200 trips in a year without the pass would cost around Rs 10,000. With the annual pass, the cost is fixed at Rs. 3,000, which saves about Rs. 7,000 for frequent highway travellers.
