CCTV footage reveals the moment a bungling thief was forced to use a shopping basket to make off with his loot during a ram-raid.
Kayne Palmer, 33, plundered an off-licence in Nottingham after reversing a stolen van into it during a two-week burglary spree between October and November 2023.
He had found the keys to the van after breaking into a nearby house, where he also stole a handbag and a bank card.
The shop's owners, who were asleep upstairs during the early-morning raid, were jolted awake by the sound of the storefront being smashed open.
Meanwhile, Palmer was busy stuffing nearly £8,000 worth of cigarettes and bottles of booze into a bag, unaware it had a hole in the bottom.
After realising many of the cigarette packets had fallen out, he can be seen in the footage frantically scooping them into one of the wire baskets provided for customers.
He then loaded the store's till, containing £3,239 in cash, into the van before driving off.
The owners called police but by the time they arrived Palmer had gone, leaving behind only thousands of pounds' worth of damage.
During the getaway, Palmer 'crashed into street furniture, people's property, and narrowly missed pedestrians, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of members of the public', detectives said.
He remained at large for another 17 days, after which he carried out five burglaries and one attempted burglary in the space of 24 hours.
The 33-year-old was caught when officers spotted him hopping over fences after breaking into a house. More Trending
He was jailed on Friday for seven years after pleading guilty to admitted eight burglaries and aggravated vehicle taking.
He also admitted multiple counts of dangerous driving, attempted burglary, conspiring to steal motor vehicles, assault, theft, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry of Nottinghamshire Police said: 'He didn't hide his offending and openly showed his face during the burglaries he committed.
'This showed his desperation and flippancy about the offences he carried out, regardless of the detrimental impact on his victims.'

A BRAZEN thief used a stolen van to smash through a shop wall and steal thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes and alcohol. Shocking footage shows the moment Kayne Palmer, 33, rams into Bestwood Hill Food and Wine in Nottingham using a stolen vehicle in October 2023. 6 6 6 Stock and shelves fly across the room as the burglar reverses into the off license at speed. Brickwork continues to crumble around the van as Palmer nabs £8,000 worth of fags and booze. He can be seen on CCTV stuffing thousands of cigarettes into a bag before discovering it has a hole in the bottom. In a panic, Palmer then grabs a shopping basket which he uses to carry the stolen goods. He also swipes a till which he loads into the van before fleeing the scene. Palmer caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the shop and stole £7,897 of cigarettes and alcohol, as well as £3,239 of cash. The frightened shop owners were upstairs at the time of the ram raid and were woken by the loud bang of the van smashing into the store. They called the police but by the time they got downstairs the crook had gone. Hours before the 5am raid, Palmer broke into a nearby house and stole keys to the work van along with a handbag and bank card. He carried out a 24-hour crime spree less than a month later, successfully breaking into five houses and attempting to force his way into another. He was finally caught when officers spotted him fence-hopping over gardens following an afternoon break-in in Bestwood, Nottingham. Palmer admitted to a series of offences, including eight burglaries, multiple counts of dangerous driving, assault and driving while disqualified. He was jailed for seven years at Nottingham Crown Court last Friday and was banned from driving for five-and-a-half years. Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "He is a clear danger to society. "During his crime spree he stole a vehicle and drove dangerously, putting members of the public at risk. "He crashed into street furniture, people's property, and narrowly missed pedestrians, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of members of the public. "Palmer also stole another vehicle and used this in a ram raid of a locally owned shop. "Here he stole thousands of pounds worth of cash and products and destroyed the victim's shop, ruining their business and livelihood. "He didn't hide his offending and openly showed his face during the burglaries he committed. "This showed his desperation and flippancy about the offences he carried out, regardless of the detrimental impact on his victims." 6 6 6

Everything we know about the LA riots and what led to them
Photos from LA this weekend have been compared to scenes from Grand Theft Auto, with cars torched, projectiles hurled at police, and protesters shot with rubber bullets. It comes less than six months after deadly wildfires spread through California's largest city, ripping through elite postcodes and burning down mansions. Donald Trump has called to 'send in the troops!' to quell the disorder, even as the state governor blamed him for 'inflaming tensions', saying things were under control until he intervened. State governor Gavin Newsom said he would be taking the president to court for 'commandeering' the state National Guard, which he called 'illegal and immoral'. Let's get this straight:1) Local law enforcement didn't need help.2) Trump sent troops anyway — to manufacture chaos and violence.3) Trump succeeded.4) Now things are destabilized and we need to send in more law enforcement just to clean up Trump's mess. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) June 9, 2025 He claimed Trump was 'hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control' and urged: 'Los Angeles: don't take Trump's bait.' The White House hit back as the row intensified, with spokesperson Abigail Jackon saying: 'It's a bald-faced lie for Newsom to claim there was no problem in Los Angeles before President Trump got involved.' They were sparked by sweeping immigration raids, as the president tries to fulfill his quota of arresting 3,000 suspected illegal migrants every day. In his inaugural address, Trump said: 'We will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.' He is ramping up the raids as well as the rhetoric, sending ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) into workplaces thought to employ undocumented migrants. Protests in LA began on Friday night and continued throughout the weekend. A significant flashpoint was sparked by officials being seen outside a branch of Home Depot hardware store, in the mainly Latino suburb of Paramount. As fears grew that they planned to raid the store, passing drivers began honking horns, as protesters gathered and the situation escalated. Border patrol officials fired tear gas and flash-bang grenades at those gathered, who were themselves throwing rocks and other objects and demanding they leave the area. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video After seeing dramatic footage of the rioting here and elsewhere, Trump claimed police had lost control and National Guard troops should be sent in, something which further inflamed tensions, it was claimed. LA is not the only US city to see protests in response to the immigration crackdown. Protesters have come out against it nationwide, saying it will tear families apart and criticising a policy being rolled back which previously restricted officers' abilities to arrest undocumented immigrants at 'sensitive' locations, such as schools, churches and hospitals. The main hotspots have been in downtown LA, Paramount, and neighbouring Compton. Protests continued into Sunday evening in Paramount, with several hundred demonstrators gathered near a doughnut shop, and authorities holding up barbed wire to keep the crowd back. Crowds also gathered again outside federal buildings in central Los Angeles, including a detention centre, where police declared an unlawful assembly and began to arrest people. Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria was among celebrities posting about the riots. More Trending Sharing a post from Gavin Newsom describing the threat to deploy Marines as 'deranged', she added that it was 'Un-American' while also sharing a video of a woman being separated from her child during an ICE raid. Meanwhile, Billie Eilish's brother Finneas has claimed that he was tear-gassed by the National Guard at a 'very peaceful' protest in Los Angeles. The singer-songwriter, 27, took to social media to detail his experience, sharing his message to more than four million followers on Instagram. 'Tear gassed almost immediately at the very peaceful protest downtown – they're inciting this,' he wrote. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6.20am on Sunday after they received several phone calls about the blaze in Heckmondwike. Firefighters removed a man, no further details, and two young girls from the property. The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the two girls, aged nine and 11, were taken to hospital. The youngest girl died in hospital yesterday. The 11-year-old remains in a critical condition, West Yorkshire Police said. Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex said: 'We are continuing to work with colleagues at the fire service to investigate this dreadfully sad incident which has resulted in a father and daughter losing their lives. More Trending 'Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since yesterday and we have been working to locate and support relatives of the victims both here and outside of the UK at what is clearly an awful time for the family. 'While our enquiries remain ongoing we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances regarding the cause of the fire and will be preparing a file for the coroner in due course.
