Bungling ram raider used shopping basket to make off with loot after bag broke

CCTV footage reveals the moment a bungling thief was forced to use a shopping basket to make off with his loot during a ram-raid.
Kayne Palmer, 33, plundered an off-licence in Nottingham after reversing a stolen van into it during a two-week burglary spree between October and November 2023.
He had found the keys to the van after breaking into a nearby house, where he also stole a handbag and a bank card.
The shop's owners, who were asleep upstairs during the early-morning raid, were jolted awake by the sound of the storefront being smashed open.
Meanwhile, Palmer was busy stuffing nearly £8,000 worth of cigarettes and bottles of booze into a bag, unaware it had a hole in the bottom.
After realising many of the cigarette packets had fallen out, he can be seen in the footage frantically scooping them into one of the wire baskets provided for customers.
He then loaded the store's till, containing £3,239 in cash, into the van before driving off.
The owners called police but by the time they arrived Palmer had gone, leaving behind only thousands of pounds' worth of damage.
During the getaway, Palmer 'crashed into street furniture, people's property, and narrowly missed pedestrians, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of members of the public', detectives said.
He remained at large for another 17 days, after which he carried out five burglaries and one attempted burglary in the space of 24 hours.

He was jailed on Friday for seven years after pleading guilty to admitted eight burglaries and aggravated vehicle taking.
He also admitted multiple counts of dangerous driving, attempted burglary, conspiring to steal motor vehicles, assault, theft, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry of Nottinghamshire Police said: 'He didn't hide his offending and openly showed his face during the burglaries he committed.
'This showed his desperation and flippancy about the offences he carried out, regardless of the detrimental impact on his victims.'

Hours before the 5am raid, Palmer broke into a nearby house and stole keys to the work van along with a handbag and bank card. He carried out a 24-hour crime spree less than a month later, successfully breaking into five houses and attempting to force his way into another. He was finally caught when officers spotted him fence-hopping over gardens following an afternoon break-in in Bestwood, Nottingham. Palmer admitted to a series of offences, including eight burglaries, multiple counts of dangerous driving, assault and driving while disqualified. He was jailed for seven years at Nottingham Crown Court last Friday and was banned from driving for five-and-a-half years. Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "He is a clear danger to society. "During his crime spree he stole a vehicle and drove dangerously, putting members of the public at risk. "He crashed into street furniture, people's property, and narrowly missed pedestrians, showing a blatant disregard for the safety of members of the public. "Palmer also stole another vehicle and used this in a ram raid of a locally owned shop. "Here he stole thousands of pounds worth of cash and products and destroyed the victim's shop, ruining their business and livelihood. "He didn't hide his offending and openly showed his face during the burglaries he committed. Girl, 9, dies and girl, 11, taken to hospital after West Yorkshire house fire

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6.20am on Sunday after they received several phone calls about the blaze in Heckmondwike. Firefighters removed a man, no further details, and two young girls from the property. The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the two girls, aged nine and 11, were taken to hospital. The youngest girl died in hospital yesterday. The 11-year-old remains in a critical condition, West Yorkshire Police said. Detective Inspector Paul Greatorex said: 'We are continuing to work with colleagues at the fire service to investigate this dreadfully sad incident which has resulted in a father and daughter losing their lives. More Trending 'Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since yesterday and we have been working to locate and support relatives of the victims both here and outside of the UK at what is clearly an awful time for the family.
