Swansea City's next transfer move is set to be their most important yet
The Swans will likely need to be in the market for another striker this summer
Swansea are surely going to have to recruit another striker regardless of what happens with Zan Vipotnik

Swansea City's early moves in the transfer window have clearly helped to elevate the mood around SA1 heading in the summer.
The captures of Zeidane Inoussa and Bobby Wales, as well as the long-awaited arrival of Melker Widell, have left many wondering whether this new regime has learned the long overdue lessons that bubbled to the surface under their predecessors.

The transfer window has traditionally been a frustrating time to be a Swans fan, but with three new faces now on board, there's a growing sense of optimism about what may lie ahead over the coming months.

There is clearly still plenty of work ahead, of course, with several areas of the squad still in need of strengthening ahead of the new campaign. A centre-back, ideally two, is surely on the agenda even if Harry Darling decides to stay. A couple of full-backs to offer some meaningful competition for Josh Key and Josh Tymon is similarly important. However, there's one pressing priority that arguably hasn't been adequately addressed for the best part of two years.
Many would make the point that Swansea haven't had an out-and-out goalscorer since Joel Piroe completed his move to Leeds United towards the end of the 2023 summer window, and their attempts to plug the gap left by the Dutchman ever since have so far fallen short.

Jerry Yates had his moments, but lacked the predatory instincts to take his tally deep into double figures in his first season. Meanwhile, Mykola Kuharevich, despite a brief clamour, clearly wasn't deemed ready for the Championship.
Both spent last season out on loan at Derby County and Hibernian respectively, and it seems highly likely that the club will look to move both of them on this summer.
If there was any unease about letting the duo go this time last year, much of it dissipated on the back of the capture of Zan Vipotnik, who was snapped up from crisis club Bordeaux. Indeed, Swans chiefs were privately confident the Slovenian was the man to take on the mantle of Piroe's long-term replacement.

It's not quite worked out like that, of course.
In his first season, the 23-year-old has managed just seven goals in 42 Championship appearances, and the fact there have already been whispers about his future at the club suggests the staunch level of support he's previously enjoyed from those behind the scenes, might now be starting to wane.
In his defence, making the step up to the Championship was never going to be easy, and there is perhaps an argument for allowing him a little more time to adapt to the rigours of this level.

But even if he does manage to find his feet, there's still an argument for bringing another body in.
Liam Cullen, Swansea's top scorer last season, has proven to be very capable in the supporting striker role, having netted 11 goals, but has sometimes struggled when deployed as an out-and-out number nine and probably isn't suited to being the main man up front.
Florian Bianchini, meanwhile, has offered little to suggest he's capable of finding the net on a regular basis, and his sporadic appearances under Alan Sheehan towards the end of the campaign suggest he's another player the Swans may look to move on over the coming weeks.

There is an important underlying point to remember in all this, of course.
Recruiting a number nine capable of scoring goals on a regular basis is traditionally the hardest proposition for any club at any level this time of year, and Swansea will likely be joined by most of the Championship in searching for the next Piroe this summer.
Much has been made of the data modelling brought to the table by Richard Montague, who has previously stressed the importance of finding players who have previously been undervalued or under the radar of others. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

Finding Swansea's next goalscoring hero could well push Montague's expertise to the limit, but it's worth remembering he does have previous success in this area.
While at Notts County, he helped identify a young unknown striker from Gateshead named Macaulay Langstaff.
It turned out pretty well, with the striker netting an astonishing 41 goals in 47 appearances to help County get promoted back to League Two, where he would go on to score another 28 goals.

Translating that success to the Championship, however, could well be more of a challenge.

John McGlynn hails his battle-ready Falkirk squad after draw with Dundee United

The Bairns won back-to-back promotions under their experienced boss and the fans watched the Championship flag being unfurled before the game, marking their return to the top flight after a 15-year absence. On-loan Barnsley forward Max Watters scored his first United goal in the 39th minute with a terrific volley, but midfielder Dylan Tait levelled in the 50th minute with a fine finish. Ivan Dolcek restored the Tannadice side's lead in the 71st minute with his first goal for the club before home defender Ethan Ross equalised with a deflected strike two minutes later for a deserved share of the spoils. McGlynn said: 'I don't think we've got our eyes closed. We know that the margins are finer in this league. 'We'll all look to learn from that and we will need to learn from that. But there's so many positives to take. 'A lot of these players have played in League One, they've stepped up to the Championship dealt with that, and today, I think they looked like Premiership players against Premiership players. 'We were 15 years out of it, the same group of players almost, stepping up to the challenge, 5700 season tickets. 'Dundee United filled their allocation as well. So great atmosphere. 'People want to come and be entertained. That was entertainment. That was definitely entertainment.' United boss Jim Goodwin was proud of his under-strength side's efforts in gaining a point after they had advanced to the Conference League third qualifying round against Rapid Wien with a 2-0 aggregate win over Luxembourg side UNA Strassen on Thursday night. He said: 'It's really strange to be sitting here on the opening day of the season and talking about the number of injuries we have. 'But there's no getting away from it. There's no excuses here. 'We're missing some real key players. Our captain and vice-captain, Ross Graham and Will Ferry. Ferry was a suspension. 'Ryan Strain, Amar Fatah and Kristijan Trapanovski were all missing and they can be great options for us off the bench or starting the game. 'A draw away from home, more often than not in this league, is not a bad result. 'On the back of us playing in Europe on Thursday, with the short turnaround and the lack of recovery time, I think we've got to be satisfied with a point. 'It was only a couple of years ago we were travelling to Arbroath to kick off the Championship season. 'In the space of two years, we're slightly disappointed to pick up a point on the opening day of the Premiership but looking forward to a game in Europe against Rapid Wien. 'When you put things in perspective, we've come a long way in a short period of time.' Ferry will be back from suspension for the midweek trip to Austria and Goodwin hopes some others will be available, although Trapanovski will see a specialist about his hamstring problem on Monday.

Falkirk come from behind twice to get the point against Dundee United

The Bairns fans watched the Championship flag being unfurled on the pitch before the game, marking their return to the top flight after a 15-year absence but against the general run of play Max Watters scored his first United goal in the 39th minute with a terrific volley from 14 yards. Dylan Tait levelled in the 50th minute with a fine finish but Ivan Dolcek restored the Tannadice side's lead in the 71st minute, with his first counter for United – only for home defender Ethan Ross to level with a deflected strike two minutes later. A share of the spoils was probably the correct outcome. Falkirk, unchanged, began the game unbeaten in their four Premier Sports Cup games this season. Jim Goodwin's side had won through to the Conference League third qualifiers with a 2-0 aggregate win over Luxembourg side UNA Strassen on Thursday night. Kristijan Trapanovski and Will Ferry missed out through injury, with Watters and Isaac Pappoe, the midfielder on loan from Ferencvaros, taking over. Falkirk, so comfortable on their artificial surface, immediately had United on the back foot, albeit failing to really test visiting goalkeeper Yevhen Kucherenko. The free-flowing Bairns kept pushing forward and in the 20th minute left-back Leon McCann's whipped in cross from the left arrived at Calvin Miller at the back post via a Brian Graham flick but he could not redirect his header towards goal. Kucherenko caused another scare when he was closed down by Ross as he aimed to clear but the ball bounced wide. United had a terrific chance to score on the break in the 26th minute but unmarked Watters' header from a Panutche Camara cross was too tame to unduly bother former Celtic keeper Scott Bain. However, the Taysiders forged ahead following a driving run into the left channel by former Falkirk midfielder Craig Sibbald, whose cross was repelled by Bairns defender Liam Henderson but only to on-loan Barnsley forward Watters, who thrashed the ball behind the helpless Bain. The second half continued in an open fashion and, after United striker Zac Sapsford was booked for diving in the Falkirk box, the home side levelled. Right-back Keelan Adams forced his way to the byline and cut the ball back for skipper Brad Spencer to lay it off to midfielder Tait, who hammered the ball high into the net from 12 yards. The home side had the ascendancy again but United stormed back into the lead after Camara drove forward and set up Dolcek, who beat Bain after his first effort had been blocked. Falkirk returned fire moments later when Ross' deflected shot from 14 yards after taking an Adams cross, wrong-footed Kucherenko. There were further opportunities at both ends in an exciting finale but the two sides sides had to settle for a point apiece.

Newcastle identify Champions League winner as Benjamin Sesko alternative

Newcastle are pursuing a deal for Benjamin Sesko, but have established a back-up plan if they cannot land the RB Leipzig striker. The future of Sesko has become one of the transfer sagas of the summer, with Arsenal interest in the forward now seeming like a dim and distant past. The Gunners snapped up Viktor Gyokeres instead and now it is a race between Newcastle and Manchester United for the Slovenian's signature. The Magpies have made a bid of a £69.8m for Sesko and seen it rejected by Leipzig as the German club sense a bidding war in the offing with the Red Devils. Manchester United are yet to make an official bid for the in-demand forward, and it seems that Sesko must make a decision on which Premier League club he wants to join and then a deal will be struck. If the 41-cap Slovenia international does fancy Old Trafford over St James' Park then the Magpies are considering other options and are eyeing up the Parc des Princes. The Daily Mail report that PSG striker Goncalo Ramos is on Newcastle's list of targets, should they fail in their attempts to sign Sesko. Still just 24 years old, the Portuguese forward joined PSG from Benfica in the summer of 2023 and has since scored 33 goals in 86 appearances across all competitions. The 16-cap Portugal international scored 19 goals in all competitions last season as PSG enjoyed a stunning treble-winning campaign. He featured regularly, but often as a substitute, starting just 12 Ligue 1 games last season and only one in the Champions League. The Mail's report states that PSG are open to letting Ramos leave this summer. An asking price has not been suggested, but it is very likely to be less than Leipzig's for Sesko. Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins is also believed to be on Newcastle's radar as they look to improve on a frustrating summer so far in the transfer market. This all comes as the future of Alexander Isak remains in the balance, with Liverpool still interested in a big-money move for the Magpies superstar. The 25-year-old Swede has had his head turned by the Premier League champions' interest this summer. Isak did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for his interest in a move to emerge along with the fact he has been training at former club Real Sociedad. The Reds have seen a bid of £110m turned down by Newcastle, but may return with an improved offer. The Magpies reportedly want £150m for their star striker and Liverpool are unlikely to meet that demand, but they will hope to convince Newcastle to do business with Isak wanting to leave. Eddie Howe's team drew with Tottenham in a friendly on Sunday and the manager was asked whether Isak will return to training in the coming week. More Trending 'Of course I'd like him to be [back in Newcastle training]. Whether he will be, I don't know at this moment in time,' said the boss. On potential transfers he added: 'There's not much time, especially when you consider you've got to get whoever comes in, and I'm talking any position here, up to speed with how we paly, intricacies of what we do. It's not easy. 'We're still actively in the market. We're looking for players. 'Obviously we lost Callum Wilson who in himself is a massive loss and then you add that to Alex who's not been with us. We've certainly felt their absence.'
