Bengal clashes: Suvendu Adhikari demands compensation for vandalised shops
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has demanded compensation for shopkeepers whose shops were vandalised in the Rabindra Nagar area of Maheshtala (South 24 Parganas). This comes after clashes erupted between two groups in the area on June 11, which left several police and locals injured and many cars and shops vandalised.
Standing outside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly along with other Bhartiya Janta Party leaders on June 13, Mr Adhikari said that adequate compensation should be ensured for victims.
'They vandalised shops, cars, looted shops of 'Hindus', the 'other' community has done the same thing in Samserganj and Suti,' Mr Adhikari said. This came in reference to the communal riots in Murshidabad in April.
The LoP also announced that BJP MLAs will participate in a protest against the Maheshtala violence on June 14 right outside the Assembly premises. He also alleged that they are not being 'allowed' to discuss the matter inside the Assembly.
'Our representatives will go to Rabindra Nagar on Saturday, including MLA Agnimitra Paul. If they stop us, we will protest wherever they stop us,' Mr Adhikari added. He also said that they will spend their own MLA salaries to offer medical assistance to the people who have been injured in the communal clashes in Rabindra Nagar. He also offered to pay for any other assistance that the affected 'Hindus' may need stating that the party will never 'abandon' one of their own.
Violence broke out in Ward No. 7, Maheshtala, on Wednesday morning, reportedly over the setting up of a shop. The situation took a communal turn following allegations of an attack on a place of worship. Tensions escalated rapidly as two groups clashed, pelting stones and attacking police personnel. The police resorted to tear gas shelling and baton charges to disperse the crowd.
Till now the West Bengal Police have arrested 40 people in connection with the violence. Seven FIRs have also been filed.
The State BJP accused the police of trying to 'whitewash a communal attack' and sought the deployment of Central forces. The ruling Trinamool Congress, in turn, accused the BJP of trying to incite communal passions.
Mr Adhikari met Governor C.V. Ananda Bose and also moved the Calcutta High Court on June 12 asking for Central Force deployment in the violence-hit areas.

Mumbai's rail overbridge opens amid claims for political credit
Mumbai: As the BMC opened the Vikhroli rail overbridge (ROB0 —a key east-west connector—at 4pm on Saturday, political sparring broke out, with both the UBT Shiv Sena , the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the BJP rushing to claim credit for the project. The bridge saw political party flags and banners being displayed on it even before it was opened to motorists. The area is represented by Sena MLA Sunil Raut, who broke a coconut at the site on Saturday, signalling the opening of the bridge. The 615-metre bridge, which links Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Vikhroli to the Eastern Express Highway, was on the drawing board for the past 15 years, with the work order being issued in 2018. It was completed seven years later, in 2025. No formal inauguration ceremony was held, with the Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis proposing to open it on Saturday evening. It is a two-way bridge. One of the political banners, put up by MLA Sunil Raut, claimed he was pursuing the project with the BMC and Central Railway since 2010. Another, bearing a photo of deputy CM Eknath Shinde and attributed to local neta Haroon Khan, declared the bridge a victory of his protest. Khan told TOI that in 2010, he and local residents staged a protest that brought train services to a halt. "There were repeated cases of people dying while crossing the tracks. We decided enough was enough and protested on the tracks. It was only after we received an assurance that the bridge would be constructed that we called off the agitation," he said. However, former BJP MP Manoj Kotak said he consistently followed up with the railways and the BMC to push the bridge work forward. "Those claiming credit don't understand the complexities involved. From acquiring land on the eastern side to ensuring minimal disruption to students near the school on the west, we worked persistently with the authorities to bring the project to completion. While COVID caused delays, the work picked up pace again after the pandemic," said Kotak. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . HM Shah stresses discipline, ideological clarity at BJP's high-level training camp in Pachmarhi
Pachmarhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Bharatiya Janata Party's three-day training camp in Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, addressing a gathering of over 200 party MPs, MLAs, ministers, and senior functionaries. Held in the serene surroundings of the Satpura Range, the camp aims to sharpen the party's ideological clarity, communication skills, and grassroots strategy ahead of upcoming electoral challenges. In his opening remarks, HM Shah emphasised the importance of discipline, ideological commitment, and public service. He urged party representatives to remain grounded in the BJP's core values while adapting to the evolving expectations of the electorate. Drawing from the party's journey from the 'Jan Sangh' era to its current national prominence, HM Shah highlighted the role of structured training in building a cohesive and responsive political organisation. The Home Minister also addressed the need for effective public engagement, urging leaders to communicate with clarity and empathy. He stressed the importance of digital outreach, constituency management, and time-bound governance. HM Shah's speech set the tone for the camp's sessions, which include workshops on time management, public conduct, and policy communication. The training camp, hosted at a hotel, is being seen as a strategic move to reinforce party discipline and prepare the cadre for the 2029 general elections. Participants are expected to follow a rigorous schedule, beginning with yoga and meditation at 6 a.m., followed by thematic sessions throughout the day. Mobile phones are restricted during sessions to ensure focus and participation. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, BJP state president Vishnu Dutt Sharma, and senior leaders including Shivraj Singh Chouhan and BL Santosh are also addressing the camp. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to deliver the valedictory address on June 16. The event underscores the BJP's emphasis on continuous learning and internal cohesion, positioning the party to navigate both governance and electoral responsibilities with renewed focus. Earlier, BJP state president V.D. Sharma, accompanied by Union ministers Virendra Kumar Khatik, L. Murugan, Durgadas Uikey, and Savitri Thakur, along with ministers from the Madhya Pradesh government, MLAs, and MPs, participated in a tree plantation drive under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. The saplings were planted near the cemetery in the Cantonment area of Pachmarhi. The site has since been named Atal Vatika.
