Latest Astrea bonds over 3 times subscribed, drawing more than $3.4 billion in demand
Fund manager Azalea increased the bond's retail tranche by 37 per cent compared to previous issuance to meet demand.
SINGAPORE - Investor demand for the latest Astrea private equity (PE) bonds has surged, with total subscriptions surpassing $3.4 billion across all three classes – 3.4 times the total US$780 million (S$1 billion) issued under both the public and placement tranches.
In a statement on Aug 7, fund manager Azalea Investment Management – which offered the Astrea 9 bonds – described it as its largest retail order book to date, underscoring strong investor confidence in the platform's track record and credit quality.
The public offers for Class A-1 and Class A-2 bonds alone drew over $1.5 billion in valid applications – 3.5 times the combined $380 million and US$50 million offered. To meet growing demand from individual investors, Azalea increased the retail tranche in Astrea 9 by 37 per cent compared to the previous issuance, Astrea 8.
For the Singapore dollar-denominated Class A-1 bonds, Azalea received $1.2 billion in valid applications from 34,969 applicants, with more than 82 per cent of the bonds allocated to those who applied for $50,000 or less.
The US dollar-denominated Class A-2 bonds saw US$280 million in valid applications from 12,592 applicants, with close to 80 per cent of the bonds allocated to those who applied for US$50,000 or less.
'We are truly heartened by the overwhelming response to the Astrea 9 public offers, which resulted in the largest retail orderbook we have seen to date,' said Chue En Yaw, chief executive officer and chief investment officer of Azalea. 'With the expanded size of the public offers, our aim was to meet growing retail demand for Astrea PE Bonds – and we are encouraged by the strong participation from investors.'
Azalea, an indirect subsidiary of Temasek, also stepped up investor outreach with explainer videos, seminars and a hybrid session held on Aug 4 to help retail investors better understand the offering. More retail engagement is planned through its annual Astrea Investor Day.

Diversifying away from US equities and bonds, with Europe being a credible alternative.
[GENEVA] The post World War 2 global architecture worked on the basis that the US provided the world with economic stability, security guarantees in Europe and Asia, as well as safe assets like treasury bonds and higher returns through US equities. And in return, the US enjoyed capital flows from other countries investing their surpluses in it. But this set-up is faltering, said Alexandre Tavazzi, head of the chief investment officer's office and macro research at Pictet Wealth Management. Against the above backdrop, he sees a mega-trend of capital repatriation from the US. He noted that 'the world has a lot of capital tied up in the US', amounting to about 90 per cent of the US' gross domestic product (GDP). 'You don't want to be nasty with the people who have financed you, but this is what is taking place in US,' he said. A major trend that investors can play on is Europe's revival, which is led by Germany's awakening, said Tavazzi. He pointed to huge increases in spending by Germany on infrastructure and defence, as well as reform of the debt brake at the state level. For one, Germany's net borrowing at the federal level is expected to jump from 1.2 per cent of GDP in 2024 to 3.3 per cent of GDP in 2025, before rising to 3.9 per cent of GDP in 2026 and 2027. Sign Up Sign Up Tavazzi is positive on European fixed income, where the 10-year minus 2-year yield spread for German bunds is higher than that for US' treasuries. He also sees European equities, which are less expensive than those of their US peers', playing catch up on the back of improving European growth prospects. Tavazzi is eyeing an improving GDP growth outlook for the euro area from the more supportive policy mix, including the German fiscal bazooka and rising defence spending. Meanwhile, in the US, a gradual artificial intelligence (AI) boost only partially offsets drags from debt overhang, more frequent supply shocks and higher interest rates. As the US becomes less exceptional, weakness in the US dollar is posing a big challenge to non-US dollar denominated investors, for whom it was great previously to be in US assets without being hedged, said Tavazzi. He added that the US' imposing of higher trade tariffs on trading partners is hurting the greenback. In China, Tavazzi sees an economy with a strong manufacturing segment but a weak consumer. 'The difficulty in China is to have a clear view about the earnings of the companies in the market, because in the end, when you buy a market, you buy the earnings. And so far, we have not seen a lot of changes in terms of expectations of earnings going higher,' he said. He noted that the housing crisis in China is deflationary and this needs to be resolved before consumer sentiment there can improve. 'We still are dealing with the aftermath of the housing bubbles and the issues, and this is still something which is not ending,' he said. He is bullish on China's technology prowess, which is challenging the US' technological leadership. He notes China has the ability to scale innovation across industries such as AI, autos and semiconductors. Asset management Echoing the need for investors to diversify away from US equities and bonds is Raymond Sagayam, managing partner of Swiss-headquartered Pictet Group and co-head of Pictet Asset Management, which manages around 273 billion euros (S$409.8 billion) in assets for institutional, wholesale and retail clients. Pictet Asset Management has over 400 investment professionals and nine investment centres globally. It has four investment centres in Asia – in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. Sagayam said that psychological damage has been done by recent major government policy shifts in the US. With investors looking to diversify away from the US, European stocks and bonds can be credible alternatives, he noted. 'We are all familiar with the fact that there is a fair amount of bureaucratic rigidity in Europe. But this is also a golden opportunity for Europe to coalesce and drive forward a reduction of red tape and more of a joint effort on issues such as common debt issuance or infrastructure development,' he said. He pointed out that it is a myth that the Magnificent Seven have a monopoly on innovation, the seven being US tech giants Alphabet, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla. Sagayam sees money starting to flow into Europe, Japan and emerging markets. He also believes that sustainability is important despite the environmental, social and governance backlash among some investors. 'Sustainable investing is actually prudent and should make for better long-term investment outcomes for our clients.' In his view, the focus of the asset-management business is not size but about being the finest. The business focus is on delivering multi-year performance, and not that over a single year, he added. With managing partners at Pictet Group serving for around 20 years each, Sagayam pointed out that clients benefit from a sense of stability from having the same managing partner for many years. Sagayam also sees scope for investors to recalibrate to more active asset management as the embracing of passive investment strategies with the ensuing fee compression makes sense only if there is geopolitical stability. He shared that Pictet Asset Management's assets under management (AUM) in Asia has grown by about 40 per cent over the past five years. 'In the next five years, we want to make sure that much of our focus is on servicing private clients and institutions in Asia, who are looking for innovative global and European exposure, including in topics such as thematic investments,' he said. Sagayam likes where Pictet Asset Management's business sits today. 'We don't tend to over-hire or over-fire. That's why right now, when many asset managers are radically slashing people and costs, we find ourselves in a fortunate position that we don't have to do that,' he said. Quant investing An area where AI is making a big impact in the asset management business is quantitative investments. Today, quantitative analysis of all companies in a universe can use hundreds of features and capture the relationships between the features. With the help of AI, quantitative investment today can capture shorter time horizon market inefficiencies, said David Wright, co-head of Pictet Asset Management's quantitative equities and solutions (Quest) team. He said quantitative investments have had a good run over the past few years and that AI is raising investors' comfort level with this kind of investment. The Quest team has 22 professionals, including numerous PhD holders, and over US$23 billion of AUM.

Ex-OpenAI, DeepMind staffers set for US$1 billion value in Andreessen-led round
[NEW YORK] Venture firm Andreessen Horowitz has agreed to lead a US$200 million investment in Periodic Labs, a new startup building artificial intelligence (AI) for material science, according to people familiar with the matter. The agreement values Periodic Labs at US$1 billion before the investment, an impressive price for a months-old company, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. OpenAI had previously agreed to lead the investment, but Periodic Labs decided that Andreessen Horowitz could offer more resources, one of the people said. OpenAI is still expected to participate in the financing and potentially team up with the company, the person said. The round hasn't closed, and terms of the deal could change. Andreessen Horowitz didn't respond to a request for comment. Spokespeople for Periodic Labs and OpenAI declined to comment. Periodic Labs was founded by Liam Fedus, OpenAI's former vice-president of research and a key member of the team that launched ChatGPT, and Ekin Dogus Cubuk, a former research scientist at Google's DeepMind AI division. In a March tweet announcing his departure from OpenAI, Fedus said he was excited about AI for science. He called it 'one of the most strategically important areas' for OpenAI and said the company planned to 'invest in and partner' with Periodic Labs. Fedus is part of a growing group of former OpenAI staffers launching their own ventures, a cadre that's drawn comparisons to the 'PayPal mafia', a group of prolific entrepreneurs including Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. Anthropic, the OpenAI rival, was started by ex-OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei. Thinking Machines Lab, recently valued at US$10 billion, was founded by former OpenAI executive Mira Murati. Investors are jostling for stakes in startups launched by alumni of OpenAI and other AI pioneers and are willing to pay lofty prices for what they see as rare talent. At the same time, larger companies are trying to retain employees with massive compensation packages worth hundreds of millions. Several other OpenAI employees – including Rhythm Garg, Linden Li and Yash Patil – recently exited the company to launch a startup called Applied Compute. The startup quickly raised funding from Benchmark, Bloomberg reported. Benchmark's investment valued Applied Compute at US$100 million, Upstarts Media reported. Sy family of SM fame retains top spot among Philippines' richest: Forbes
[SINGAPORE] Forbes Asia on Thursday (Aug 7) announced the 2025 Forbes list of Philippines' 50 Richest, where the combined wealth of its tycoons rose by over 6 per cent to US$86 billion, from US$80.8 billion the year before. In 2025, the minimum net worth to make the list is US$185 million, up from US$170 million in the previous year. The Philippine economy expanded by 5.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year, on the back of positive domestic demand and an uptick in infrastructure investments. However, US tariffs of late proved to spell some trouble, with the PSE Composite Index falling around 2.8 per cent year to date, though partially offset by a firmer peso. Despite recent turbulence in the areas of trade and geopolitics, close to half of those on the Forbes list of Philippines' 50 Richest in 2025 are wealthier compared to a year ago. Founded in 1958, SM Group began its journey with Henry Sy Sr opening a small shoe store named ShoeMart (SM in Carriedo, Manila in the Philippines, before it became a large department store. The focus was first on buying large supplies of shoes from the US. SM Group to date has various holdings across retail, property and logistics sectors, with SM Investments and real estate flagship SM Prime Holdings the core pillars of the business. From a Spanish-Filipino family involved in the marine cargo handling industry, his grandfather started the business with a port in Manila in 1916, which was rebuilt by his father after World War II. The move was initially to bid for the Manila International Container Terminal in the country with the contract secured in 1988. ICTSI to date operates a total of eight terminals in the Philippines. Manuel Villar The property tycoon also retained his status as the country's third-richest man, with a net worth of US$11 billion. The Filipino businessman and former politician served as the 20th president of the Senate of the Philippines from 2006 to 2008, and as senator from 2001 to 2013. In recent times, his mass-housing and memorial park developer Golden MV Holdings is transitioning into Villar Land Holdings. Villar Land Holdings is the builder of Villar City, a 3,500-hectare mixed-use development that will be completed over the next three decades. The eldest of the siblings Isidro Consunji now serves as chairman and president of the company, which was founded in 1954. The organisation is best known for its real estate arm DMCI Homes. It also owns Semirara Mining and Power Corporation, the country's largest coal producer, which obtained regulatory approval for its US$5 billion coal mine expansion project in Antique province in Feb 2025. 6. Que Azcona family The Que Azcona family owns and operates Mercury Drug, the largest pharmacy chain in the Philippines with 1,200 locations across the country and over 15,000 employees. Their net worth stands at US$3.6 billion. Founded by the late Mariano Que in 1945 with a single pushcart, the company grew into a household name, dominating the retail pharmaceutical sector. His grandson, Steven Que Azcona, is the company's chairman and president. His late mother, Vivian Que Azcona who died in April 2025, also served as its president. The business remains privately held and has avoided franchising to maintain tight operational control. 7. Jaime Zobel de Ayala and family A Harvard-educated businessman and philanthropist, Jaime Zobel de Ayala was the chairman of his family's Ayala Group until his retirement in 2006. The company was listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange in 2011. The son of the Filipino entrepreneurs, Ferdinand Vincent, helps run the company as president. 10. Tony Tan Caktiong and family As the founder and chairman of Jollibee Foods Corporation – the largest fast food company in the Philippines – Tony Tan Caktiong's combined net worth with his family stands at US$2.9 billion. The chemical engineering graduate started his business as a humble ice cream parlour in 1975, before expanding into burgers. He eventually built a multi-brand empire to include businesses such as Chowking and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, which Jollibee acquired in 2019 for US$350 million. The beloved national brand also acquired a 70 per cent stake in Compose Coffee, a South Korean cafe chain with over 2,600 stores, for US$238 million in 2024.
