4 killed in small plane crash at London Southend Airport, World News
The US-built Beechcraft B200 Super King Air plane had been bound for the Netherlands, when it "got into difficulty and crashed within the airport boundary," Essex Police Detective Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin told reporters.
Southend Airport, which is located about 35 miles (56km) east of the capital and used by easyJet to fly to European holiday destinations, will remain closed until further notice, the airport's CEO Jude Winstanley said.
Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which investigates civil aircraft accidents, said it was "too early" to determine what caused the crash. It has deployed eight inspectors to the site.

England overcome weather delay for emphatic test victory
WASHINGTON - An experimental England side completed a clean sweep of their Americas tour with an emphatic 40-5 victory over the United States on Saturday. Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore and Cadan Murley all scored tries as England were 19-0 ahead at halftime while Jack van Poortvliet, his replacement Harry Randall and debutant Gabriel Oghre added three more tries after the break. England captain George Ford put over four conversions and Charlie Atkinson one. The Americans scored their only points on the final whistle from a line-out break finished off by Shilo Klein. The start of the test at Audi Field, watched by some 19,000 spectators, was delayed for an hour by a weather alert and the players were taken off for a further half-hour when the referee ordered both teams off the field in the 29th minute because of a lightning warning. The disruptions, plus high humidity, had little ill effect on England, however, as they dominated the clash and might have posted a more emphatic scoreline were it not for handling errors. Having beaten Argentina in two tests earlier this month, despite ceding 13 players to the original British & Irish Lions squad and a further two subsequent replacements, England used six new caps against the U.S. with an eye on increasing selection options for the World Cup in two years' time. "The conditions were difficult but it was a good group effort and a huge experience for the new players," said Ford after the final whistle. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. France's European run ended by familiar foe Germany
BASEL, Switzerland - Heartbroken France were left lamenting another European exit at the hands of Germany on Saturday in a stunning 6-5 penalty shootout loss in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals, leaving Les Bleues still searching for their first major tournament title. The loss came despite having a player advantage for most of the game, after Germany's Kathrin Hendrich was sent off for a tug on the hair of Griege Mbock Bathy in the box in the 13th minute. Grace Geyoro's ensuing penalty kick in the 13th minute was France's only goal in a bruising match that was tied 1-1 at the end of extra time. "It's very cruel, it's very difficult," Geyoro said. "We don't realize it yet, and there's a lot of disappointment and frustration at going out like that tonight. We're wondering when it's going to be smiling for us at last. It's difficult, frankly it's hard, that's football. I'm disappointed." The loss conjured memories of Euro 2022 when Germany dispatched France 2-1 in the semifinals before losing to England for the title. Despite the man advantage, France seemed to wither as the minutes wore on against the eight-times European champions. "We're sorry because when you're eleven against ten, you know that your set-pieces, numerical superiority do not exist anymore, so we had to avoid giving them those situations," coach Laurent Bonadei said. It's a shame, we didn't need much. Especially after what we'd done in the group phase, I thought we were getting stronger." France indeed had their chances, with goals by Delphine Cascarino and Geyoro chalked off for offside in each half. Melvine Malard clanged a rocket off the crossbar in the dying seconds of extra time. "I'm obviously disappointed," France goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin said. "They were down to ten against 11, so even more disappointed. Finishing on penalties and going out like that is always the worst way to go. "It was a complicated game, they were behind for almost 90 minutes and they were sending warheads up front. "We're a bit down, we've just taken a blow to the back of the head." France's Amel Majri and Alice Sombath had their penalties saved in the shootout, with Sombath's spelling the end of France's tournament, as the heartbroken players collapsed on the pitch. "There's obviously a lot of disappointment," Geyoro said. "We really wanted to go all the way, but unfortunately we stop at the quarter-finals. Leaving the tournament just before the semi-finals is a real blow." REUTERS

Farrell says Lions back row vindicated selection for Brisbane win
BRISBANE - British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell said Tom Curry and Tadhg Beirne had fully justified their selection after playing key roles as the tourists dominated Australia physically early in their first test victory on Saturday. Farrell said he had noted the media commentary around the form of the two flankers when he included them in his team at the expense of Wales captain Jac Morgan and Irish loose forward Josh van der Flier. Curry scored one try and provided a pass for another, while Beirne was hard on the ball at the breakdown throughout the match at Lang Park, where the Lions earned a comfortable 27-19 victory. "Immense, absolutely immense," Farrell told reporters. "Big game players, who were probably challenged by a good few. And I think it told the story. I think Tom Curry put in some really nice shots defensively. "Tadhg got the turnover very early doors that set the tone really, and I don't think it stopped there. He carried on for the rest of the game. "(Number eight) Jack Conan's carrying was very much on the front foot, wasn't it? So those three guys, I'm sure they'd be delighted with how they responded to selection. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Farrell was also impressed with how effective the more direct running from the Lions was as they scored three tries in the first 41 minutes. "You could see the difference in our game," he said. "As I've said all along, the hardest part about any team coming together is gelling attack because it takes a lot of cohesion for that to happen. "So we're trying to find out about ourselves in that regard." Farrell was disappointed that the Lions let Australia back into the game in the last quarter when the Wallabies scored two tries. "I thought we let them back into the game in regard to a lack of discipline in the second half, which gave them a bit of a sniff to get back in the game," he said. "Physically, I suppose when you give a couple of penalties away, or you're getting warnings, or there's a loose offload or a loose carry, that suppresses you a little bit, and we started losing a few collisions. "(But) I actually believe that's a fantastic place for us to be, because there's so much more in us." REUTERS
