Has Sparsh Shrivastava faced bias due to TV background? Actor answers

India Today02-05-2025
Sparsh Shrivastava, who has been winning accolades for his performances in Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' and the web series 'Dupahiya', also recently showcased his musical abilities as he released his single, 'Ji Huzoor'. While this might come as surprise, what many might have forgotten is how Shrivastava has been working in the entertainment industry for a long time. He won the dance reality show, Chak Dhoom Dhoom, at 13, which might explain his flawless moves in the song from 'Dupahiya'. He also acted in shows like 'Shake It Up' and 'Balika Vadhu'.advertisementMany actors, who have their roots in TV, have often complained of a bias working against them in the entertainment industry. Many said that landing a role in a film becomes a task. So, has Sparsh faced it?"It might be there, but honestly, I have never faced it. In fact, I see it [TV stint] in a very positive way because I don't come from any acting school. Maine padh likhkar ya school jakar acting nahi sikhi (I did not have any formal training), I learnt in on the job. So, I see this TV time as my acting school and OTT as my post-graduation (smiles). And films would be the job," he told during an exclusive interview with India Today Digital.
The actor also added that he still faces rejection, even after a hit like Laapataa Ladies. Explaining that it's normal, he told us, "Because what happens is, I may be a better actor, but a character may suit someone else better. They may look a certain way, their body type, expressions, or facial structure might be what the makers are looking for. So, I think the filmmakers would naturally choose them."advertisementIn fact, he does not take rejections personally. "I don't take rejections very personally. In fact, I celebrate them. That's my way. There was one project I was very attached to a long time ago, and when that didn't work out. It shook me a little. I told myself that I will not get affected by these things. Rather, I went and gave myself a treat. So now, I celebrate my rejections." While Sparsh doesn't feel the pressure of living up to the hype that he has created with Laapataa Ladies, he does feel responsible to choose good scripts. "There is only one purpose of scripts, films, web shows, dance shows -- to entertain the audiences. Everything else comes later. So whatever project I do, if it can give a good message, great! Otherwise, it should at least bring a smile to my audiences. They should get a relief from their stressful lives," Sparsh shared. He also spoke about being stereotyped, and explained that he will always strive to bring something new to every character, however similar they might be.Sparsh recently turned singer, lyricist, and composer with the single, 'Ji Huzoor'. He also added that he is very serious about pursuing music and wants to do music tours as well, besides acting.Must Watch

Kol to host jury for India's Oscar entry

Kolkata: The president of the Film Federation of India (FFI), the umbrella organization for all major film associations in India, has announced that Kolkata will host the jury meeting to select India's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards. At its managing committee meeting on Tuesday, the FFI executive committee also opened applications for films seeking nomination in the International Feature Film category. Kiran Rao's 'Laapataa Ladies' was India's official entry for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, but it did not make the shortlist. The FFI will appoint a jury chairperson, along with experienced professionals from creative fields, to form the selection panel. The final entry will be determined by a vote after all screenings are completed, with the announcement scheduled by late Sept. According to FFI president Firdausul Hasan, the organization has overseen this selection process in India since 1957. "That year, 'Mother India' was the Indian entry," Hasan noted. The Mehboob Khan film starring Nargis and Sunil Dutt had reached the final five in the Best Foreign Film category. "Since 1957, there have been two occasions—2019 and 2021—when the jury met in Kolkata. The first was in 2019, chaired by actor-director Aparna Sen. The second was in 2021, with director Shaji Karun as jury chairman," Hasan added. In 2019, 'Gully Boy' was chosen as India's official Oscar entry, while in 2021, "Koozhangal" (Pebbles) was selected. On both occasions, the jury convened at Bijoli Theatre for screenings and deliberations. "This year, we plan to hold the meeting at one of Kolkata's multiplexes," he said. "We encourage more filmmakers to participate in the selection process for India's entry this year," Hasan said. When asked if the fee is prohibitive for regional cinema, he explained, "It is necessary to cover logistical expenses." According to the guidelines, eligible films must be released in India between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. Each film must have a public theatrical run of at least seven consecutive days in a commercial cinema for the benefit of the producer and exhibitor. The Academy also permits films to qualify if they are theatrically exhibited outside their country of origin (excluding the USA and its territories) for at least seven days with paid admission. Eligible entries must have at least 60% of their content in a local Indian language or dialect. Among other things, submissions must also include a list and synopsis of artists and technicians, an English-subtitled version, details of film festival entries or awards received, and a website or page for the film. Films unreleased as of September 10 this year but seeking Oscar consideration must submit an undertaking and confirmation from the production and distribution company that the film will be released for at least seven days in a theatre before the deadline. Janaki V v/s State of Kerala: Why you should watch Suresh Gopi's legal drama film on OTT

Malayalam actor-politician Suresh Gopi was back on the big screen in the role of an advocate with Janaki V v/s State of Kerala, which also starred Anupama Parameswaran in the titular role. The 2025 Malayalam film is set for its digital release on Zee5 via OTTplay Premium on August 15. Before the courtroom drama makes its digital debut, we list some of the compelling reasons as to why you should watch the Malayalam courtroom drama on OTTplay Premium. Suresh Gopi in Janaki V v/s State of Kerala Why you should watch Janaki V v/s State of Kerala on OTT Suresh Gopi as a fiery advocate Suresh Gopi's most popular advocate role would be in the Chinthamani Kolacase, which released way back in 2006. JSK marks the actor-politician's return as a feisty advocate, who mouths fiery dialogues and makes bold statements both inside and outside the courtroom. Suresh Gopi is known for his powerful dialogue delivery in his cop movies with some of his dialogues, such as 'Just Remember That' from the 1994 Malayalam film Commissioner, being popular to this day. Anupama Parmeswaran's return to Malayalam cinema Anupama Parmeswaran made her acting debut with the 2015 Malayalam film, Premam, which was an instant hit and all its three lead actresses gained much popularity. However, Anupama has only been seen in a handful of Malayalam films after that, with the actress making quick and strong progress in Telugu cinema with films such as Tillu Square and Karthikeya 2. Fans are excited to see her back in a Malayalam film with JSK. Woman's fight for justice JSK revolves around the titular character Janaki, a spirited young IT professional who falls victim to assault. The film then follows Janaki as she fights her battle in the courtroom even as the accused finds supporters too. Though all too familiar a tale in real life, JSK deserves a watch for the relevant and sensitive issue it seeks to tackle. Yet another Malayalam courtroom saga Malayalam cinema has delivered several gripping courtroom dramas in the recent past, including superstar Mohanlal's Neru, which narrates a blind sculptor's battle for justice. There is also Nna Thaan Case Kodu which blends in satire to the legal drama narrative. JSK joins this tall list of Malayalam courtroom dramas, while focusing on the sexual assault's fight for justice. JSK director Pravin Narayanan has also penned the script, incorporating thriller elements in the courtroom drama. There is also sufficient curiosity around JSK due to the huge controversy that the film weathered with the CBFC seeking to make changes such as removing Janaki from the title. The film was finally released with a modification in the title and two more changes. The digital release is likely to see more viewers watching JSK to get a better understanding of the controversy surrounding the film.
