Lyles showdown with NFL's Hill cancelled

Lyles showdown with NFL's Hill cancelled

Straits Times4 hours ago

Olympic 100 metres champion Noah Lyles has cancelled his much-anticipated showdown with NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill, due to what he said were personal reasons and lack of buy-in from sponsors.
Hill, who plays for the Miami Dolphins, had challenged Lyles to a 50-yard race days after the American won the blue-riband event in Paris last year in the closest-fought final in Olympic history.
Lyles said that plans were to hold the event this weekend in New York's Times Square.
"We were very deep into creating the event," Lyles told reporters at the Stagwell Global Sport Beach event in Cannes, France. "In fact, it was supposed to happen this weekend.
"Unfortunately, there were some things, complications, personal reasons that it just didn't come to pass, but we were full on. We were going to shut down New York's Times Square and everything, it was going to be a lot of fun."
Hill has boasted that he could beat Lyles in a race, leading to plenty of trash talk between the two men.
When Lyles won his fourth consecutive 60m indoor title in February, he playfully tore off his race bib to reveal a scrawled message: "Tyreek Could Never".
Hill, among the fastest players in the NFL, said on social media that the race was on, writing "Coming to a city near you".
Lyles said many people, including potential sponsors, thought it was all just talk.
"A lot of people didn't believe it to be true. They thought it was just, 'Oh, this is just them talking online'," Lyles said. "The companies didn't believe it's real." REUTERS

Sinner through in Halle to set up clash with former champion Bublik

Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Sinner through in Halle to set up clash with former champion Bublik Top seed Jannik Sinner beat local hope Yannick Hanfmann 7-5 6-3 to move into the last 16 at the Halle Open on Tuesday as the world number one looks to defend the only grasscourt title he has won in his career. In his first match since the epic Roland Garros final where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a contest that lasted 5-1/2 hours, Sinner returned to winning ways as he got the better of Hanfmann who is ranked 138 in the world. "I'm very happy. He is a great server and a great baseliner, so breaking him is very difficult on this surface," Sinner said. "I'm very happy how I handled the tough situations mentally. The first set could have gone into a tiebreak and then anything can happen. "First matches are never easy on grass, and also second and third matches. So let's see what's coming in the next round. I think tomorrow I have the day off, which is good, because the body feels different on this surface." Sinner will next face Alexander Bublik, who won the tournament in 2023 and also faced the Italian in the French Open quarter-finals, and the top seed said he can only expect "the unexpected" against the unpredictable Kazakh entertainer. "He's a great player, a great talent. A huge talent, actually, and grass is his favourite surface. He beat me here in Halle, he won (the trophy) here in Halle, so it's for sure a place he loves to play," Sinner added. "I'm trying to stay calm mentally and trying to see what I can reach. He's a great talent, a great server and he can do whatever he wants. It's hopefully going to be a good match." Earlier, Russian fourth seed Andrey Rublev beat Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-4 to advance but other top seeds Ugo Humbert and Francisco Cerundolo fell. Denis Shapovalov knocked out sixth seed Humbert 6-4 4-6 7-6(4) while American Alex Michelsen beat fifth seed Cerundolo 2-6 7-5 6-4. Shapovalov's Canadian compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime also advanced but not before he was taken the distance by Laslo Djere in a 6-3 6-7(6) 6-1 victory. Joining eighth seed Boulter were Mingge Xu, Sonay Kartal, and Francesca Jones, though Boulter and Kartal are set to face each other in the next round. "I've played enough of them now. It's just another match for me. I have so much respect for Sonay, she's an incredible tennis player," said Boulter. "I've always said to her that she's going to pass my ranking. I know how good she can be and dangerous. We actually played a really close match on grass quite a few years ago so I know it's going to be an absolute battle." Boulter, currently on an 11-match winning streak at her home tournament, is aiming to become the first player in Nottingham Open history to claim three consecutive titles. The 17-year-old Xu beat American Katie Volynets 6-3 6-3, setting up a clash with Polish sixth seed Magda Linette, who overcame Filipino Alexandra Eala 6-4 6-3. Jones defeated compatriot Harriet Dart 7-5 6-4 and will now face Czech seventh seed Linda Noskova. Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova battled past Germany's Laura Siegemund 7-6(2) 4-6 7-6(6) and is set to meet fourth seed Yulia Putintseva. The winner between top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia and American McCartney Kessler will take on China's Zhu Lin, while Canadian fifth seed Leylah Fernandez will play Spain's Cristina Bucsa, who defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-3 6-3. Grand Slam champions Osaka, Keys crash at first hurdle in Berlin

Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS BERLIN - Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka tumbled out of the Berlin Open first round on Tuesday after Russia's Liudmila Samsonova battled from a set down to win 3-6 7-6(3) 6-4 on Tuesday. It was a disappointing start to the former world number one's grass season, with Wimbledon in just under two weeks. The 27-year-old Japanese had won her first title in May in almost two years following a maternity break. Osaka, who had reached the third round of the Australian Open in January before retiring injured, also lost in the first round of the French Open. After a strong start from Osaka, Samsonova battled back in the second set to clinch it in a tiebreak with the Russian world number 20 firing 11 in the first two sets. Osaka was 40-0 up on her opponent's serve at 5-5 but could not finish the job and allowed her to come back. "I was just trying to fight until the end," said Samsonova, a winner in Berlin four years ago. "I said, 'OK, until the last ball, I will try to push and try to find my game.'" She did just that to set up a round of 16 match against third seed Jessica Pegula. Australian Open champion and seventh seed Madison Keys also suffered an early exit, with Czech Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, moving into the next round with a 7-5 7-6(6) win. Vondrousova, who had been out for three months earlier this year with a shoulder injury, will face Diana Shnaider in the round of 16 after the 21-year-old Russian overran Croatia's Donna Vekic 6-2 6-4. The southpaw powered through the first four games and before Vekic had any time to react, she had wrapped up the first set with her fourth set point. Shnaider then found a bit more resistance with her opponent earning early break only to be immediately broken back twice as the world number 12 bullied the Croat with punishing groundstrokes to go 5-4 up and seal the win on Vekic's serve. China's Wang Xinyu had to do even less work, matching world number 16 Daria Kasatkina's baseline game blow for blow, to drop just five games en route to a 6-3 6-2 victory over the Australian in 67 minutes. She will next play French Open champion and second seed Coco Gauff. Fellow Chinese and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen pulled out on Tuesday with a right neck injury ahead of her match against Elena Rybakina with American Ashlyn Krueger slipping in as lucky loser.
