Notre Dame projected to return to the College Football Playoff by Athlon Sports

USA Today9 hours ago

It's easy to be bullish on Notre Dame as the 2025 college football season approaches, and one national publication projects the Fighting Irish to return to the College Football Playoff.
Athlon Sports released its bowl game predictions for every postseason tilt, including the 12-team Playoff, which could be the final time we see the field with this iteration if expansion goes through as expected.
This is how the publication has the first round of the CFP stacking up:
No. 5 Ohio State vs. No. 12 Boise StateNo. 6 Georgia vs. No. 11 MiamiNo. 7 Notre Dame vs. No. 10 OregonNo. 8 LSU vs. No. 9 Alabama
The first-round features several of last year's teams, with LSU, Miami and Alabama entering the field this year. Athlon Sports has Notre Dame beating the Ducks and advancing to the quarterfinals to play Penn State.
If the ND-Oregon matchup does take place, it would be just the third meeting on the gridiron ever and first since 1982. The Ducks have never defeated ND. The Irish won the first meeting in 1976 before the second meeting several years later, which ended in a 13-13 tie in Eugene.
Here are the magazine's quarterfinal projections:
No. 4 Kansas State vs. No. 5 Ohio State (Cotton Bowl)No. 3 Clemson vs. No. 6 Georgia (Orange Bowl)No. 2 Penn State vs. No. 7 Notre Dame (Rose Bowl)No. 1 Texas vs. No. 8 LSU (Sugar Bowl)
The magazine projects Penn State to exacts its revenge against the Fighting Irish in Pasadena.

MLB Sends Jacob Misiorowski Message During Game Against Paul Skenes

MLB Sends Jacob Misiorowski Message During Game Against Paul Skenes originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski made his major league debut on June 12th against the St. Louis Cardinals and immediately impressed with a hitless outing over five scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory. Advertisement Misiorowski committed to LSU but opted to turn pro after the Brewers selected him out of Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri, in the second round of the 2022 draft. Today, former LSU Tiger and No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Pittsburgh Pirate ace Paul Skenes, faced off against Misiorowski in front of a sellout crowd at American Family Field in a highly-anticipated matchup. Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski (32)© Benny Sieu-Imagn Images Misiorowski outdueled the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year in a 4-2 victory, tossing five scoreless innings and striking out eight, while Skenes lasted just four frames and allowed four runs in his shortest outing of the season. Advertisement Afterward, MLB posted on X declaring, 'Jacob Misiorowski came to PLAY,' and posted the rookie's stats from his most recent outing. Misiorowski set a career high with eight strikeouts, and opposing batters are now hitting an absurd .030 against him. Through three starts, Misiorowski is 3–0 with a 1.13 ERA, punching out 19 hitters over 16 innings. He has also fired five pitches at 102 mph or harder this season, ranking fourth among all major‐league starters since 2008 including the postseason, per Statcast. The timing couldn't be better for Milwaukee. Last year the Brewers captured the NL Central crown, and this season they find themselves two games behind the Chicago Cubs atop the division. Milwaukee's current 18–8 surge over its last 26 games is the best stretch in baseball, and Misiorowski's emergence only enhances their push to reclaim first place. No 'Sophomore Slump' Predicted for Commanders' Jayden Daniels

No 'Sophomore Slump' Predicted for Commanders' Jayden Daniels originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the biggest questions this year is whether Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels can replicate his efforts from his rookie season. Advertisement Leading the Commanders to a 12-5 regular season record, an NFC Championship appearance, and winning Offensive Rookie of the Year is a hard thing to replicate. But that is what is in front of Daniels. Some think that a natural regression might be coming for the former LSU star, but not Steve Palazzolo. Speaking on the "Check The Mic" podcast, he said he doesn't see Jayden slipping up in 2025. 'How much have we talked about Jayden, like let's give it one more year before we see Jayden Daniels and the rise to stardom? I would just say looks like a star once again doesn't have any semblance of a sophomore slump like C.J. Stroud, like Baker Mayfield, like RG3, some of the other guys over the last 10 years,' Palazzolo said. Advertisement Will a similar fate meet Jayden in 2025? Commanders' fans hope not, and general manager Adam Peters went about his business and traded for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil to boost the firepower around his young quarterback. Is that enough to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump? Time will tell, but there's every reason to think that Daniels won't regress in Year 2. FOX Sports names Notre Dame safety Adon Shuler a breakout candidate for 2025

Notre Dame continues to rack up preseason accolades. As the 2025 college football season nears, FOX Sports ranked its Top 10 breakout candidates, and Fighting Irish defender Adon Shuler made the list. The redshirt sophomore safety was a big part of Notre Dame's stout defense on its journey to the College Football Playoff national championship game. He became a first-year starter in former coordinator Al Golden's defense, and it was a unit that finished 11th in total defense, fourth in scoring defense and fourth in pass defense. Shuler, a former four-star recruit, played 768 snaps—third-most on the team—and recorded 59 tackles with three interceptions, including a Pick-Six against Georgia Tech. The safety will now be a veteran presence in the secondary under new DC Chris Ash, especially with Xavier Watts and Jordan Clark now in the NFL. This is a Fighting Irish secondary that expects to be among the nation's best this fall.
