Sales slump for Manyavar & Mohey's parent Vedant Fashions

Mumbai: Fewer wedding dates, subdued consumer sentiments and increased competition from newer players wiped off nearly $2 billion from Vedant Fashions' market capitalisation over the past five months.
The company behind Manyavar and Mohey said competition in India's ethnic segment is at a level never seen before and is not sustainable with the number of stores trebling over the past two-three years. The biggest ethnic wear brand posted 2% revenue growth last fiscal, while same store sales growth fell 4% in FY25 as well as the quarter ended March.
"We have certainly witnessed competition in the last two decades of us operating this brand. Nothing at these levels, for sure. We have not seen these many stores ever opening up, because it has all happened in a very short period, the last two to three years. Earlier as well, when there was competition, there were a few stores here and there, but nothing at this scale," said Vedant Modi, chief revenue officer at Vedant Fashions, at its earnings call.
The market for occasion wear was historically serviced more by local shops or made-to-order ones, but over the past decade brands such as Manyavar, Mohanlal and more recently Tasva and Ethnix by Raymond entered the segment. "Typically, what we have noticed is people open up a single store in a city and do decently well. And as they sort of scale up to a state level, to a region level, that's when things start to go south. This industry must understand the hack of understanding consumer preferences and understanding data at a very deep pin code level, because what works in one part of the city does not work in the other part of the city," said Modi.
According to management consulting firm Wazir Advisors, the apparel and accessories market in India was estimated at $75 billion in FY23, and the total ethnic wear market represented nearly 30% at $22 billion. Within that, the ethnic menswear market was estimated at $2 billion in FY23, just 10% of the total ethnic wear market, indicating the potential upside. Of the total ethnic wear market, wedding and celebration wear accounts for 58% and men's contribution is 12% of the segment. Hence, wedding and occasion wear dominates the men's ethnic dress collection and is relatively high on branded quotient.Historically, the celebration wear category is the least impacted by slowdowns as Indians like to celebrate weddings, festivals and other occasions as lifetime events. But Vedant Fashions has had a tough year thus far, which it blamed on minimal wedding dates and weak performance, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where the company has higher presence compared to peers."If I give you an example of a city like Raipur, we used to have one exclusive brand outlet which we operate. And maybe another 25, 30 stores would have opened in that market. And if we look at the financial data of all these numbers of stores opening, hardly any of them are at a mark where business is sustainable even in the mid-term. So, certainly there is a lot of macroeconomic pressure which we have seen," Modi added.Analysts said Vedant's fourth quarter performance was underwhelming on revenue delivery despite low base and wedding season tailwinds.

People across the world realise Modi hain toh sab kuch mumkin hain: Tripura CM Saha

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 11-year rule as India's 'Amrit Kaal' and listed some of the BJP-led central government's 'bold initiatives', including in the Northeast. 'With his work of 11 years, not only the people of India but people across the world also realise that Modi hain toh sab kuch mumkin hain. We can proudly say we have not seen such a PM before. He does what he says. I would say these 11 years were our Amrit Kaal,' the chief minister said. Saha said the Northeast was earlier known as an insurgency-prone zone but peace was restored there as thousands of militants had joined the mainstream owing to the initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Saha said that 11-12 peace accords were signed by the Centre with militant and other outfits, leading to peace in the region. Calling the region Ashtalakshmi with the inclusion of Sikkim in the North Eastern Council (NEC), Modi initiated ambitious development in all sectors in the region, Saha said. 'Narendra Modiji, after becoming the prime minister of the country, said that India will not develop unless the northeastern region is not developing. Development of Ashtalakshmi is one of his priorities,' the chief minister said. Saha said that in the past 11 years, different schemes were undertaken to improve socio-economic status of the tribals, scheduled castes, and other backward classes, the women's reservation Bill was passed in Parliament, the Ayushman Bharat scheme was launched, the triple talaq was abolished, and the Citizenship Amendment Act and the Waqf (Amendment) Act were passed. 'In these 11 years, Prime Minister Modi's government successfully brought 25 crores of people above the poverty line. Modiji fulfils what he promises. His contributions and performances would be written in history in golden letters,' he said, adding that the Modi government's mantra is 'performance, accountability and good governance'. 'The International Monetary Fund says that India is now a bright future, India is going to have a bright future… What the World Bank is saying…India is the fastest-growing major economy and the main engine of global economic growth in 2025 26,' he said. Speaking about the recent encounter killings of 27 Maoists in Chhattisgarh, Saha said the Modi government had nearly eradicated Maoist activities in the country and the rest would be finished in a few months. In an oblique reference to the opposition Congress, Saha said the country witnessed corruption and that nepotism was a common phenomenon before 2014, when Modi became the prime minister. Further, Saha said he had urged the Centre to repair the fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. 'The border is being monitored. We already brought it to the notice of the central government,' he said. The chief minister also commented on BJP ally TIPRA Motha's allegation of inaction in the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants, stating that the government was working actively on all issues as per the law. Asked about the recent visit of an AIIMS delegation to Agartala's GBP Hospital, the chief minister said the hospital has adequate infrastructure. 'AIIMS didn't give a report but we talked. We have everything. These just need to be streamlined,' he said.

Modi govt delivers fast-tracked welfare schemes, says Meghwal

1 2 3 Patna: Union law and justice minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday said Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi's work culture is defined by the speed and impact of implementing welfare schemes during his 11 years in office. Speaking at a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Patna, alongside BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal, Meghwal said the central government under PM Modi had significantly enhanced the scope and efficiency of various schemes since coming to power in 2014. "There were no dearth of schemes earlier also, but PM Modi laid emphasis on the welfare of the poor. It is reflected in the fact that more than 25 crore people have come out of the poverty line due to the successful implementation of the govt schemes," Meghwal said. He added, "Earlier, it used to take more than 15 years to complete a project, but now PM lays the foundation stone and also inaugurates it. The number of airports in India has doubled and now even poor people have started traveling by airplane. This change is the result of Modiji's leadership. He has made more than 100 policies so far." The minister also cited landmark decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370 and claimed that India has emerged as the world's fourth-largest economy due to the Modi govt's economic policies. Later in the day, Meghwal inaugurated an exhibition at the BJP state headquarters celebrating 11 years of "service, good governance and welfare of the poor" under the NDA govt. "This is not just an exhibition, but a living saga of 11 years of development journey, good governance and public service of the NDA govt under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji," he posted on X.
