Delhi HC asks SSC to make online portal more user friendly for blind candidates

News184 days ago
New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to make its online portal more user friendly for the blind to apply for its various exams.
A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela passed the directions while asking the SSC to consider providing the blind candidates an alternative mode to upload their photographs while applying online for various exams being conducted by the commission.
A plea filed by National Federation of the Blind's Santosh Kumar Rungta sought an alternative mode of uploading photographs for Combined Graduate Level Examinations, Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination 2025, and Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldar (MTS and Havaldar) Examination, 2025.
The measure, the petitioner said, would help blind candidates 'whose eye conditions are such that it makes it impossible for them to capture live photograph through face recognition and upload them thereby depriving them of their right to participate in the selection process for recruitment".
The petition termed the exclusion 'a clear case of discrimination and violation of fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution".
The bench observed that the petitioner had forwarded 60 e-mails of such candidates to the SSC and directed the commission to look into the matter at the earliest.
The bench directed the SSC official to sit with the petitioner and settle the grievances.
'There are some issues that need to be resolved. In future be mindful. Come with your plans for future examinations," it said and posted the matter on November 12. PTI UK UK AMK AMK

'Israel Guilty of Genocide; A Place I Will Not Want to Call Home': Gershon Baskin

Video Karan Thapar 'They have created a reality in Gaza in which human beings cannot live. That is genocide. And that is what Israel is doing in Gaza.' Palestinians mourn during the funeral of people who were killed while trying to reach aid trucks entering northern Gaza through the Zikim crossing with Israel, at Shifa Hospital, in Gaza City, Saturday, July 26, 2025. Photo: AP/PTI Gershon Baskin, the Middle East Director of the International Communities Organization, who is one of the acknowledged and highly regarded voices of conscience in Israel, says: 'If it hasn't become one as yet, Israel is definitely on the fast road to becoming a pariah state'. He says Israelis increasingly feel less welcome wherever they travel. In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, to talk about his recent cri de coeur where he writes 'Israel is rapidly becoming a foreign land to me … a place that I will not want to call home, a place that I cannot call home', Baskin readily admitted and accepted that Israel is guilty of genocide. 'If you read the convention on genocide there's no question that what Israel is doing in Gaza is genocide. We're erasing a civilization. Ninety percent of the people in Gaza have no homes to go back to. They've been destroyed. Israel is now levelling half of Gaza. There are no schools, no universities, no public buildings, no libraries. Mosques are being erased. Churches were hit. Roads, infrastructure, water, electricity. They have created a reality in Gaza in which human beings cannot live. That is genocide. And that is what Israel is doing in Gaza.' Chidambaram's remarks, stating, 'There should be no politics around such sensitive matters." She further highlighted the sacrifices of the armed forces and stated, 'The army is fighting at the borders. We cannot question the army at any cost." 'I will not question the investigation going on. I will never question our armed forces. We should be first Indian not think like a politician," she told CNN News 18. Aishwarya also spoke about the upcoming Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan, stating that playing cricket with a country that is not even worthy of dialogue is 'wrong." 'Pakistan is not even worthy of talking to, and yet we are going to play cricket with them… this is way, way, way too wrong," she said. Shubham Dwivedi, who had married just weeks earlier on February 12, was vacationing with his wife and her sister in the picturesque Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, when terrorists opened fire on unarmed Hindu tourists. SC stays Calcutta HC order on West Bengal OBC list

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Calcutta High Court's decision that had stalled the implementation of a revised list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) notified by the West Bengal government. 'Prima facie, the high court order seems to be erroneous," said a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria while hearing the appeal of the state government. On June 17, the Calcutta High Court ordered an interim stay on notifications issued by the state government with regard to reservations to 140 subsections under OBC-A and OBC-B categories made by it. At the outset, the bench took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state government, and said, 'This is surprising. How can the High Court pass such an order? Reservation is part of the executive function." The state had prepared the new list after the high court, in May 2024, quashed the inclusion of as many as 77 communities in the OBC list.
