The center knows all too well that in the blink of an eye, your life and the lives of your family and friends can change forever. It requires immense trust to talk to someone about difficult experiences, let alone a complete stranger.
Bearing this in mind, Family Services Center considers it a privilege to work with individuals and families and make every effort to begin each therapeutic relationship with a genuine foundation of respect. Their dedicated professional team has over 100 years of experience to draw from, allowing them to help individuals and families navigate through the challenges of life.
Morning anchor Ellie Byrd sat down with the Homicide Survivors and Crime Victims Coordinator Joshua Rivera for the Family Service Center. He tells us how impactful the programs they provide to the community are.
'The Homicide Survivors and Crime Victims Program or HSCVP supports families and friends who have been impacted by violent crimes, including homicide, vehicular manslaughter, domestic violence, robbery, burglary, hate crimes, and bullying. HSCVP's mission is to identify victims of crime in need of practical intervention and support following these crimes. We also provide victims' advocacy and assist those victims as they navigate through the criminal justice system,' said Joshua Rivera.
They know that grief doesn't just go away with time; it's something you have to work on and work through. Rivera said they are there for you to connect one-on-one with someone to address your needs.
There are qualified staff that are available to provide individual and family grief counseling, listen and assist you with specific questions you may have, and provide you with helpful resources and assist you with victim's compensation if available to you.

Teen arrested in fatal shooting of two brothers in Arlington, police say

A teenager has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two brothers during what Arlington police described as a high-risk transaction that went wrong. Xavier Weddington, 19, is facing a capital murder charge in the deaths of 17-year-old Jason Cuevas and 21-year-old Bryan Cuevas. The shooting occurred on Thursday at the Paddock on Park Row Apartments in the 400 block of West Park Row Drive, according to the Arlington Police Department. Xavier Weddington, 19 CBS News Texas Brothers were found shot outside Officers responded to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. and found the Cuevas brothers outside one of the apartment buildings with gunshot wounds. They were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Suspect claims he was shot About 30 minutes later, 911 dispatchers received a call reporting that a man — later identified as Weddington — had been shot in the leg. Officers found him in the 2500 block of Sherry Street, roughly 3.7 miles from the original crime scene. Weddington told police he had been shot by an unknown suspect while walking to a relative's home. However, investigators said his story was inconsistent and raised suspicions. Witness identifies the shooter A witness from the apartment complex later identified Weddington as the shooter in a photo lineup, police said. Detectives learned that Weddington regularly stayed at a nearby apartment and confirmed that a friend had picked him up from the crime scene and driven him to the Sherry Street location — a timeline consistent with the witness account. Police suspect a "high-risk transaction" "Investigators believe the Cuevas brothers arranged to meet with Mr. Weddington at the apartment complex to complete a high-risk transaction that ultimately went south," Arlington police said in a news release. "Multiple firearms were recovered at the crime scene." Weddington was arrested Friday by the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. He was booked into the Arlington City Jail and later transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. Investigation still in progress The investigation remains ongoing.

Second man charged in deadly beating of man found dead in Oak Forest, Illinois, home

A second man was charged in connection with the deadly beating of another man who was found dead inside a home in Oak Forest, Illinois, last month. Rashee Wyrick, 32, of Chicago, was arrested on Saturday by the Illinois Department of Corrections and the U.S. Marshals Service's Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder. Oak Forest police said around noon on May 23, the victim, identified as 53-year-old Edwar Lewis, was found unresponsive inside a home in the 15500 block of Long Avenue. He died from blunt force trauma after being battered with an unknown object. Michael Protho of Chicago was previously charged with one count of first-degree murder. A criminal complaint said that he unlawfully entered the home and battered Edwards. During a court appearance on May 27, prosecutors detailed the narcotics found in the home, including cannabis and mushrooms. They said the victim, Lewis, who had been living in the home for about a year, had a strong connection to narcotics sales, and Protho was seen leaving the home with large garbage bags. Wyrick is due to appear in court on Tuesday at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
