
Nearly half of parents say they plan to go into debt this year to pay for school supplies because they are so expensive
According to a report from Intuit Credit Karma aimed at parents with school-age children, 39 percent of respondents said they can't afford their back-to-school shopping this year. In the same survey, 44 percent of respondents said they planned to go into debt to cover the costs of school shopping.
The number of parents who expect to go into debt to afford supplies for their children has risen by 10 percent since last year. When Intuit asked the same question in 2024, only 34 percent of parents reported planning to take on debt.
According to a CNBC price and inflation tracker, the price of many school supply staples has increased since the pandemic.
The cost of backpacks has increased by nearly 30 percent since 2021. Lead pencils and art supplies have increased by 26 percent, and tablets and paper pads by 24 percent.
In other words, if a backpack was $12 around 2021, it's likely now around $15.60.
In 2021, Amazon sold a 24-pack of Ticonderoga #2 lead pencils for $3.49. That same pack on Amazon today costs $5.49.
Families with children in elementary school are reportedly planning, on average, $858.07 on school supplies this year. That number is a decrease from last year, when parents planned to spend $874.68, according to the National Retail Federation.
The fear of rising prices has already shifted some parents' buying habits — according to the Intuit survey, more than half — 56 percent — of respondents said they're already cutting back on nonessential school purchases to save money.
The potential for Trump's tariffs to drive up prices has driven early back-to-school shopping by parents hoping to save some money, a survey from Coresight Research found. Well over half of the respondents to that survey — 62 percent — said they planned to begin back-to-school shopping before August.
John Mercer, an analyst at Coresight, told CNBC that the early buying was "probably to preempt any price rises."
He said that retailers haven't raised prices yet, primarily due to Trump's pause on tariffs, but he expects that once the pause ends, prices will rise.
'At some point, if tariffs come in, there will be price impacts,' Mercer said, noting that 'consumers are right to be concerned.'
The National Retail Foundation shared similar findings — parents are adjusting their buying this year in part due to fears that tariffs and inflation will lighten their wallets beyond what they can bear.
'Consumers are being mindful of the potential impacts of tariffs and inflation on back-to-school items, and have turned to early shopping, discount stores and summer sales for savings on school essentials,' Katherine Cullen, the National Retail Foundation's vice president of industry and consumer insights, said in a statement.

Food aid groups that partner with the U.S. Agency for International Development to assist in providing critical nutrition for millions around the world have had to watch cases of food go to waste as the Trump administration dismantled USAID. In Georgia, Mana Nutrition, a company that creates ready-to-use therapeutic food, is waiting for someone to pick up 400,000 cases of its nutritional supplement to be shipped worldwide. The food could help an estimated 60 million people, but chaos with USAID has disrupted coordination, the company told the Washington Post. The company is planning to destroy approximately 585 cases of its peanut paste this month because it became too dated to ship while waiting for a new government contract that never happened. The owner of Mana Nutrition told The Post that some of it could have been added to previous shipments, but wasn't. But other companies or organizations that have or had contracts with the government to supply aid have faced similar issues in recent months. In July, approximately 500 metric tons of food aid, specifically high-energy biscuits meant for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan, expired while being stored in warehouses in Dubai. While the administration assured people that the small percentage of food aid wasted would not impact future shipments, some have raised concerns about the pattern that has been highlighted due to the dismantling of USAID. Last month, the company Edesia Nutrition waited for someone to pick up more than 100,000 boxes of nutritional aid that had sat in a warehouse in Rhode Island. After sounding the alarm, the shipments were finally picked up only after a Rhode Island retailer teamed up with the company. In May, several people familiar with USAID told Reuters that more than 60,000 metric tons of food, sourced from American farmers and manufacturers, was set to expired in warehouses by July. That concerned enough people that the Office of Inspector General said it would open an investigation into food aid in warehouses. It's unclear if that aid was eventually shipped. The Trump administration has sought to axe USAID by revoking federal funding and firing most of its staff. President Donald Trump and his allies have characterized USAID as an unnecessary agency filled with 'waste, fraud, and abuse.' USAID, which was established in the 1960s, was one of the world's leading distributors of food and aid. Partnering with other companies, USAID provided humanitarian assistance, medical necessities, education, and more to people living in poverty, war-torn countries, and disaster-impacted communities. A spokesperson for the State Department told the Post that it is 'constantly assessing global humanitarian needs and expects to allocate additional resources to address those needs in line with U.S. interests.'

America's spring homebuying season just hit its weakest point in over a decade — marking the slowest market since 2012 and sparking fears that a full-blown price collapse could be next. Spring is traditionally the hottest time for pending home sales but that's no longer the case in the in the now struggling US housing market. In 2025, April through June brought the lowest sales in 13 years, according to Redfin. The once-reliable season fizzled as sky-high mortgage rates, stubbornly elevated prices, and growing economic uncertainty pushed buyers to the sidelines. 'People say price solves everything,' Atlanta real estate veteran Glennda Baker told Bloomberg. 'But price doesn't solve uncertainty.' She currently has 21 listings — a personal high — is now urging clients to slash prices to sell. Earlier in the year, analysts hoped the market might rebound as mortgage rates dipped slightly and listing prices softened. But that flicker of optimism has faded. Hesitant buyers, mounting price cuts, and frustrated sellers have left what agents are now calling a 'paralyzed' market — one that, realtors warn, may only revive if sellers start slashing prices in earnest. 'We thought we hit rock bottom but we keep discovering there's more rock bottom to be had,' said Chen Zhao, head of economics research at Redfin. Redfin's findings confirm what brokers across the country already know. Lack of showings, showings, weak offers, and growing desperation among sellers is not helping the market. Some sellers are pulling homes off the market entirely — de-listing their properties because they won't get asking price. Experts predict it's not going to get batter any time soon. 'We're seeing a lot more price decreases throughout Rhode Island now,' said Johnny Sheil, of Mott & Chace Sotheby's International Realty. 'Uncertainty scares some people.' Experts also warn there's little chance of a dramatic turnaround for the remainder of the summer. Meanwhile, the surplus of homes is so bad in some US metros that it's become a sellers worst nightmare. In one instance, Cape Coral, Florida, has become a place people are desperately trying to escape, with for sale signs popping up on lawns all over town. But no one will touch their properties. Open houses are empty, foreclosure 'boat tours' take locals around to see homes that the bank has repossessed, and half-built homes are left to rot. 'It is one of the worst real estate markets for a seller right now,' local realtor José Echevarria told the Daily Mail. Prices in Cape Coral have been slashed for more than 50 percent of homes over the past two years - more than any other major metro area in the US, he added.

What was once slow paced farm towns has become the new go-to for those who wish to make a home for themselves on Long Island, even if just for the summer. Realtor Donald Brennan has been a homeowner and resident on the North Fork for 22 years and recently his real estate firm opened up an office there. He told Daily Mail he's seen major changes in the area and that's in part due to how crowded the Hamptons on the South Fork has gotten. Families, friends, and retirees from New York City have been traveling down to the Hamptons - just two to three hours away - for generations. Naturally, as it became more and more popular over time, he said the traffic between New York City and the coastal getaway has become non-stop and the once quiet enclave is now polluted with traffic, parties, and back to back beach houses, leaving little room for new development. He said the North Fork, which mainly used to be farmland, has been Long Island's best kept secret for years. He'd always thought of it as an arm of Brooklyn. 'There's a really strong connection to Brooklyn as a feeder market.' he told the Daily Mail. Todd Bourgard, the CEO of Douglas Elliman's Long Island, the Hamptons, and North Fork locations, said that his agents are quickly adapting to these quick sales and bidding wars. 'North Fork is now, and always has been, a beautiful place to live,' Bourgard told The New York Post. 'People are discovering it more and more every single day. We're certainly seeing the prices going up, because, like everywhere else, it lacks inventory.' Brennan said there really is no average homebuyer on the North Fork. People seem to be coming in masses regardless of age. Most are looking for single family homes with four or more bedrooms, swimming pools, and close proximity to the bay. According to Brennan the biggest issue with the rush of new residents is their desire to change the cohesive landscape of North Fork towns like Mattituck or Southold with populations of 4,200 and 6,600 respectively. Because there are so many land-buying opportunities and less-expensive homes that have been around for decades, affluent families are using their means to construct new, modern buildings. The popularity of the South Fork has caused new builds to be difficult and beach front space to be limited. 'I think it's jarring for some people,' he said. But he certainly sees the appeal. 'There's really almost no traffic to speak of through the summer months. Some very good restaurants that have appeared over the last decade or so,' he said. 'So it's a little more relaxed, quieter existence than what most people may be experiencing today on the South Fork.'
