Liverpool: Marc Guehi 'makes transfer decision' as Newcastle revive interest in £40m defender

Yahoo2 days ago
Marc Guehi reportedly favours a move to Liverpool over Newcastle this summer.
The Crystal Palace captain is now into the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and has been linked with an exit before the transfer window closes. That said, the Eagles are yet to receive an offer for the England international having stuck a £40million price-tag on the defender's head.
According to the Mirror, Liverpool were in pole position for Guehi last month but switched their focus to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. As things stand, the Reds are no closer to landing the Sweden international after seeing an opening bid rejected.
Meanwhile, the Guardian have reported that the Magpies could revive their interest after making four bids rising to £70m last summer before ultimately moving on.
However, it has been claimed that Guehi would prefer to join the Premier League champions if he was to leave Palace this summer. This would be another blow for Newcastle as Benjamin Sesko is set to become the latest in a long line of transfer targets to reject a move to St James' Park.
It's added that the central defender is happy in London and would be willing to see out the last 12 months of his contract before joining a club on a free transfer after the World Cup.
Liverpool's need for defensive reinforcements were highlighted earlier in the week as head coach Arne Slot was forced into a major reshuffle for both pre-season friendlies against Athletic Club.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez unavailable due to illness and injury, the first game saw Trey Nyoni partner Andy Robertson in central defence before Wataru Endo filled in alongside Ibrahima Konate for the second game.
It remains to be seen if the Reds are willing to spend £40m on a player with less than a year left on his contract, though they have just received a timely £8.7million windfall as Tyler Morton has completed a permanent transfer to Lyon.
A statement from the Ligue 1 side reads: 'Olympique Lyonnais has announced the arrival of midfielder Tyler Morton from Liverpool.
'The England U21 international has signed a five-year contract, ending June 30, 2030, for £8.7million (€10million), with bonuses of up to £4.3million (€5million) and a 20% profit-sharing scheme on any potential capital gains.'
Liverpool are nearing a key sale to bolster their transfer kitty even further as widespread reports claim they have reached an agreement to sell striker Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal.
The Saudi club are said to have made the Uruguayan striker their 'priority' target after missing out on Victor Osimhen, who made his loan move to Galatasaray permanent.

Want to leave Man City? Guardiola tells Savinho and Ederson to 'knock on my door'

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola said if Brazil internationals Savinho and Ederson want to leave Manchester City they should just come ask. The City manager addressed speculation about the players' future on Friday, a day before the team opens its Premier League campaign at Wolverhampton. 'If they want to leave they will come to me. I'm working with them because I am here. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door,' Guardiola. The 21-year-old Savinho joined City last summer on a $45 million transfer and signed a five-year contract but has been linked to Tottenham, which has seen Son Heung-min leave this offseason and James Maddison go down with an ACL tear. Savinho, a winger, scored three goals in 48 total appearances last season. 'I don't know,' Guardiola responded when asked if Savinho would stay. 'Tottenham in that case or any other club (that) wants a player should call the club, right?' Guardiola insisted that he hopes Savinho stays. 'I'm only concerned right now today that Savinho will be with us until the rest of the season and hopefully for many, many years because with 21 years old with the potential that he has ... plays lots of minutes, he has to improve in the final decisions ... but he's an extraordinary player,' Guardiola said. Still, Savinho won't travel with the team for the season opener because of an unspecified injury from last week's friendly in Sicily. 'Savinho is injured, sorry I didn't remember,' Guardiola said. 'He's injured from Palermo. Had a problem. A few weeks he will be out.' The 31-year-old Ederson has been Guardiola's first-choice goalkeeper since arriving from Benfica in 2017. He's helped City win six league titles, among other trophies. British press reports say Turkish club Galatasaray wants to sign him. 'Ederson didn't come to me and say 'I want to leave, I have an offer,' so all the players (who) are here are our players, and I work with them. What's going to happen (in the transfer window) nobody knows." Guardiola added: 'In the end, as always, the desire of the players (is) above everything.' ___ AP soccer:

Report – Lille Rival Galatasaray & Neom To Sign Inter Milan Defender

Lille have reportedly rivalled Galatasaray and Neom to sign Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard. This according to French outlet Foot Mercato, via FCInterNews. Inter Milan signed Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich two years ago. And while he has made a big impact, there is a feeling that his form suffered a definite drop-off last season. Furthermore, the Frenchman will turn thirty next campaign. Therefore, there is a nagging sense that this may be the right time for Inter to cash in. Meanwhile, Galatasaray are reportedly eyeing up a deal to sign Pavard. Big-spending Saudi Pro League club have also sounded out a move. Therefore, it would be a familiar environment. Foot Mercato report that Neom's wage offer was not high enough for Pavard. However, Lille could try to tempt the 29-year-old with their sporting project, as they look to make a defensive signing for next season.

(Photo by) It comes after the Nigerian national team's social media account posted that they 'stand with Ademola Lookman' in his battle to leave Atalanta for Inter. Lookman is currently believed to be in Portugal, having taken some time in London, walking out on Atalanta training over a week ago. He is furious with Atalanta for blocking his path to Inter, claiming the €45m including add-ons offer was sufficient to allow for a transfer. Atalanta responded that they had promised to sell him last summer if the right proposal came in, but only to a club outside of Italy, to avoid reinforcing their direct competitors.
