12 government schools in Karnataka's Raichur to get high-tech science labs

In a move to enhance science education in rural India, 12 government schools in Raichur district in Karnataka will be provided with well-stocked science lab stations to conduct experiments and curated science courseware aligned with the state and National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) syllabi.This is part of Prayoga Institute of Education Research's Kriya initiative, which aims to transform science learning for over 11,000 students across 77 schools in Karnataka.advertisementPrayoga's effort in Raichur is supported by State Bank of India Foundation (SBIF), the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of India's largest public sector bank, and the SBI Funds Management Pvt. Ltd, said Vallish Herur, Managing Trustee of Prayoga.
Kriya initiative, which is now in its 10th year, is designed for students in classes 6 to 10, as a multi-year programme, particularly in government and rural schools, to understand the impact of experiential learning of science, added Herur.The initiative, said a press release issued by Prayoga on Thursday, also features a structured Teacher Empowerment Programme (TEP) with continuous academic mentoring for teachers.Speaking about the collaboration, Sanjay Prakash, Managing Director of SBI Foundation, said, "This partnership is a significant step towards bridging the educational gap in rural India. By providing quality science education and the necessary resources, we are enabling students to experience science in a more practical and engaging manner."advertisementThe collaboration is a part of SBIF's Integrated Learning Mission (ILM) project titled 'Reimagining Science Education', he added.

NCERT- File image Across India, the availability of advanced laboratory experiences remains uneven, particularly in schools where physical infrastructure, trained personnel, or safety resources are limited. This gap can influence how students understand and apply scientific concepts, with a direct impact on exam performance and readiness for higher studies. On 13 August in New Delhi, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and Kwala signed an MoU to develop Prayog Shala, an augmented reality immersive chemistry lab for Class 11 students. The agreement was signed by a representative from NCERT and Shubham Raj, CTO of Kwala, accompanied by Saharsh Sinha, a member of the technical team, in the presence of Raman Malhotra, Research Manager at Mai Labs. The initiative aims to deliver practical chemistry learning experiences through mobile devices, tablets, and PCs, expanding access to interactive science education in diverse settings. With Prayog Shala, students will be able to perform immersive virtual experiments aligned with NCERT curricula, bringing advanced laboratory experiences to places where physical facilities are limited. NCERT shared that after seeing a demonstration of Prayog Shala, they found the product to be revolutionary with strong potential for large-scale implementation, and expressed appreciation to the team for developing such an innovative solution. The goal is not only to digitise the lab experience but also to ensure that each experiment a student completes can be validated, recorded, and recognised regardless of location. This is enabled by blockchain infrastructure. Using the permissioned Kalp mainnet, student certificates, completions, and teacher verifications will be stored immutably on-chain. Kwala, the automation layer for the project, will manage notifications, periodic credential issuance, and governance guardrails, while integrating with NCERT's DIKSHA platform for nationwide scalability. Such verification can have benefits beyond compliance. In a distributed education ecosystem that spans urban centres and remote villages, verifiable and tamper-proof records can strengthen institutional trust, reduce fraud in credentialing, and provide students with portable proof of learning. With more than 50 million students in NCERT's network, the potential reach is substantial. The rollout will begin in one or two states before expanding nationally. Lessons from these early phases will help refine the programme. The design prioritises inclusivity so that even students in low-connectivity areas can benefit from immersive lab simulations. 'Our vision is to combine immersive learning with the reliability and security of blockchain verification,' said Mr. Tapan Sangal, Director of Kalp Foundation. He added that by integrating AR content with automated on-chain processes through Kwala, we are creating an education experience that is both engaging and verifiable. The long-term success of Prayog Shala will depend on effective governance and adaptability. As technologies in education continue to advance, particularly in automation and AR, this initiative shows that large-scale, equitable innovation is achievable when access, trust, and accountability are central to design.

The Class 8 Mathematics textbook, Ganita Prakash, aims to make learning more interactive, engaging, and connected to real-life applications. It encourages students to link mathematical problems with everyday scenarios-such as "What mathematics is involved in making a cup of coffee?"-and incorporates the contributions of historic mathematicians like Aryabhatta, Aryabhatta-II, and Brahmagupta to explain various concepts. Here is a list of the Key Features of the New Class 8 Mathematics Textbook: 1. Contextual Examples Contextual examples are used in the textbook to make students develop and understand connections- especially how Mathematics is related to the real world. For example- how a carpenter's problem is solved with Mathematics- "If you have two sticks of equal length and a thread, can you make a rectangular frame using the thread". 2. Hypothetical Questions Engaging questions, such as "How many times would you need to fold a sheet of paper to reach the moon?" introduce students to large numbers and quantities. 3. Exploration of Patterns The book encourages students to spot patterns for solving one question. One section discusses the famous "Hardy-Ramanujan" number, 1729, the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two distinct ways. 4. Hindu Number System The textbook introduces students to the significance of "Hindu Numbers" and "0"- how the Hindu Number System is robust in using only 10 numbers in representing any number of quantities and more. 5. "?" Mark The "?" mark is used in the textbook to indicate students to start thinking and figure things out. A bold "?" denotes a main question, while a regular one indicates a sub-question, prompting students to think and explore. 6. Teacher's Guide Includes suggestions for educators on effectively using the textbook. 7. Puzzles and Games Puzzles, Games and activities are introduced in the textbook to make learning fun and engaging and questions are used in each part of the section rather than at the end of the chapters. 8. Illustrations and Comics Colourful visuals and comics make concepts easier to grasp and more engaging. Overall, Ganita Prakash introduces a fresh approach with visual cues, historical references, and real-world contexts to spark curiosity and critical thinking in students.

But, it is creative, exciting and an interesting adventure, as proved by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) latest textbook on the subject. Ganita Prakash, the Part-1 textbook for Class 8, made public recently, is aligned with the National Education Policy – 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2022-2023. It is one of the parts of the series for the Middle Stage (Grades 6 to 8), that serves as a critical bridge between the preparatory and secondary stages. Setting the tone of the book's objective right at the outset, a note to students states, 'To be able to appreciate the art of mathematics, it is not enough to just be a passive spectator. You need to immerse yourself in its process like a detective getting into action to solve a mystery.'
