Cancer-survivor from Kanker tops state Class 10 exam
Raipur: The tag of supergirl would sit easy on Ishika Bala . The class 10 student from Maoist-hit Kanker district not only defeated cancer but also went on to top the state board exams. The farmer's daughter scored 99.2% marks, standing first in an exam that only 76% managed to pass. Ishika's achievement is a beacon of hope for the district where female literacy rate is barely 59.6%.Ishika recently recovered from her battle with blood cancer, and studied for her exams despite the rigours of treatment. She would have appeared in the class 10 exams last year but her health was in a very precarious state. She credited her success to the support of her parents and teachers and said she wants to become an IAS officer. It's this dream that helped her fight through weakness and pain every time she felt the life-threatening illness trying to put her down. Her father said he was proud of Ishika and her inspiring fightback has left everyone who has seen her battle in awe of her.In a remarkable coincidence, the class 12 topper, Akhil Sen, is also from Kanker. He scored 98.2% marks (491/500 in commerce). His father runs a newspaper agency, and he too would distribute papers every morning while preparing for his board exams.Eight of the 85 students who made it to the top 10 list are from Bastar division, which has been battling Maoist insurgency for 25 years.Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who announced the Class 10 and 12 board exam results at the secretariat in Nava Raipur on Wednesday, extended his wishes to all successful candidates, their families, and teachers."To those who couldn't succeed this time, don't lose heart. Failure is often the first step toward success. Prepare for the next attempt with even greater resolve," said CM Sai.Nearly 3.3 lakh students appeared for Class 10, 76% of whom passed — a slight improvement from last year's 75.64%. In Class 12, Raipur dominated the merit list, with seven of the top 10 students from the state capital. The overall pass percentage was 81.8%, with 84. 7% of girls passing compared to 78% boys.

Suspecting them of being police informers, Maoists murder 2 in Chhattisgarh village
Two residents of Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district were murdered on Saturday night by Maoists who suspected them of being police informers, officials said. Bijapur is the Chhattisgarh district worst affected by Maoist violence. The state has reported 22 civilians killed by Maoists this year and 71 last year. Saturday night's incident took place in Sendrobor and Yampur villages in the jurisdiction of Pamed police station. The area is in the southernmost area of Bijapur, towards the Telangana border, near the area where the Maoists' most dangerous battalion — Battalion 1 of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) — is believed to be located. A security camp, Dharmavaram, is located seven kilometres from the villages, and the police station is around 10 km away. Last year, the Dharmavaram camp was attacked by the Battalion 1 with heavy gunfire and rocket launchers, injuring 12 jawans. The NIA recently filed a chargesheet in the case. An official said a group of Maoists came to the villages late at night in Saturday and murdered the two civilians, 'suspecting them to be police informers.' This comes just a few days after the insurgents killed three other civilians in Bijapur. The killings come amid an intensified push by security personnel against the Maoists, leaving the group at their weakest ever condition. Several Maoists, including top leaders, have been killed in recent years. The group's Politburo, its highest decision-making body, has shrunk to just three members: Mallojula Venugopal Rao alias Sonu, Thippiri Thirupathi alias Devuji, and Misir Besra alias Sagar. At the height of the insurgency, the Politburo had at least 11-12 members. The Central Committee members have also whittled down to 17 from 42 in 2007-08. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Chhattisgarh for a two-day trip starting Sunday. He is set to visit a security camp and chair a meeting to review ongoing anti-Maoist operations in the state, said Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma.
