Geraldton Buccaneers bounce back with a win as they topple the Perry Lakes Hawks at home

West Australian19-05-2025

The Geraldton Buccaneers bounced back from last week's loss with a win at home against the Perry Lakes Hawks in round seven of the NBL1 West competition on Saturday.
Star guard Johny Narkle shot 25 points with eight rebounds, two assists and an impressive five steals.
Narkle provided the Buccs with an all-round game, with impressive work at the defensive end as well as his work up the court in the 96 to 68 win.
Aaron Ralph also starred with a 20-point performance in his 13 minutes of game time. The Buccs veteran made the most of his time on the court shooting at 67 per cent from beyond the arc, showing his value as the Buccs pulled away from the Hawks in the third period.
It was the Hawks that got off to a quick start in the first quarter with a flurry of points through Nic Floyd before the Buccs answered back through Ralph who got his night started with a three.
The Hawks managed to run out to a narrow lead after the first, up by four points to the Buccs.
The Buccs jumped out of the blocks in the second quarter with Josh Keyes and Narkle scoring for the home side before Verle Williams and Liam Hunt joined the party with important points.
The third quarter saw the Buccs run away with the game as Narkle and Ralph punished the Hawks from beyond the arc. Clinical scoring from the field saw the Buccs go into the last break up by 25 points.
Williams and Keyes worked in tandem as they made the most of their opportunities.
Ralph put the game to an end with impressive shooting in the fourth from deep as the Buccs claimed their fifth win of the season as they climbed back up to sixth spot on the league ladder.
The Buccs now prepare to host the Warwick Senators at Activewest Stadium on Saturday, May 24.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge inks new deal as big question mark looms

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a new two-year contract with the club. Beveridge, who is already the longest-serving coach in the club's history after being appointed ahead of the 2015 season, will now be tied to the club until the end of the 2027 season. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Beveridge's 'weird' move during loss to Hawks. Beveridge, in his 11th year, was coming off contract at season's end and both parties were comfortable with starting 2025 without a deal for next year. Mere months ago, Beveridge, 54, and the Bulldogs were unsure if they were going to remain in partnership beyond this season, after a roller coaster past few years. But amid an impressive start to 2025, Beveridge ruled out coaching any other club in April. The fresh deal comes despite the Dogs falling out of the top eight on the back of last week's loss to Hawthorn. They are sitting in ninth place with a 6-6 record ahead of Thursday night's clash against St Kilda. Beveridge has been widely praised for the Dogs' hot start to the season that saw them becoming the highest-scoring team in the competition. However, the big wins against lowly teams have been offset by losses to the league's heavyweights. Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes, who has been a big critic of Beveridge in the past, questioned why the club 'rushed' into the deal. 'You know my thoughts. What's the rush? He said he's not going to coach anywhere else. What was the rush?' Cornes said on The Agenda Setters before the deal was officially announced. Fellow panellist Nick Riewoldt said, 'there is a lot going right with the Bulldogs', except for one big issue. 'The clincher is they're not winning the games they should win, but they're number one for scoring coming into the weekend,' he said. Cornes noted some 'weird things' Beveridge did in last week's loss to Hawthorn. Gun midfielder Ed Richards, who has taken his game to a new level this year, strangely started outside the centre square against the Hawks. 'I think he's been a little too cute, as he often does ... That's OK, he spins the magnets around, what's what Luke Beveridge does,' Cornes said. 'The start of the game, I was intrigued by the positioning of that man, the hottest player in football, he went to halfback and played alongside Jack Ginnivan and it costs you a goal. 'The lack of accountability from Richards on Ginnivan, who had come off 31 and three goals a week prior ... Ed Richards gets the ball goggles on, gets sucked into the contest him, Ginnivan's a smart half forward, drifts back and that instantly costs you a goal within 15 seconds of the game. 'It is strange stuff from Luke Beveridge who does some weird things, it must be said.' Beveridge's first 10 seasons have delivered seven finals campaigns, but despite having a list that is the envy of many opposition fans, the Dogs have never finished in the top four. They won the 2016 premiership from seventh place, while they reached the 2021 grand final after finishing the home and away season in fifth place. Beveridge's five other appearances in September have resulted in elimination final losses. It's a trend that Cornes was quick to point out. 'Often starts the season really slowly, they're now six and six with what I think to be one of the best lists in football,' Cornes continued. 'What will happen now is they will get on a great run, because they have a really soft draw, playing a lot of games at Marvel and will get themselves to contention again, but it will be too little too late. 'And this happens every single year because they refuse to settle the line-up.'

Giants women run Willetton close but ultimately fall short

Goldfields Giants women's coach Jaymi Worthington has challenged her players to become a more well-rounded group capable of better sharing the load, following Saturday's 80-69 NBL1 West loss against Willetton. The Giants pushed the fifth-placed visitors for most of the game but with the scores level at three-quarter-time, the Tigers took charge in the run home, 21-10. It was the local squad's seventh consecutive defeat after Nici Gilday (24 points; four rebounds; five assists; one blocked shot) and Erin Antosh (21 points; 13 rebounds; three assists) carried the vast majority of the workload. Alongside the team's 80 points, Willetton's starters also racked-up a combined 29 rebounds and 19 assists. With a 2-10 win-loss record, the Giants are tied with the South West Slammers, but hold 11th spot on percentage. Goldfields led by a point at quarter-time and by six points during the second period. 'Our bench players contributed quite well, but we need at least one other person to step-up and score in double-figures,' Worthington said. 'They (Willetton) had four players (score) in double-figures and we needed that (because) their defence obviously started to double-team Nici and Erin. 'It means we need other players to go to in those circumstances. 'In those last five minutes, from a coaching perspective as well, we needed to adjust quicker by making sure we had other options. 'The bottom line is that we need other players to step-up and spread the scoring more.' Goldfields remain three games outside the top-eight. 'Willetton have a very strong team and it's a skill, learning how to win,' Worthington said. 'That's all it is — having that belief that we can (beat top sides). 'But the reality was that Willetton were able to convert and close-out the game. 'I feel we're on the cusp of that, but we just need to keep pushing and getting better.' Ladder Cougars (11-0); Senators (9-2); Redbacks (9-3); Eagles (7-3); Tigers (7-4); Magic (7-6); Flames (5-5); Lightning (5-6); Hawks (4-6); Wolves (3-8); Giants (2-10); Slammers (2-10); Suns (1-9).

Geraldton Buccaneers overcome Joondalup Wolves at home after coach Dayle Joseph ejected

The Geraldton Buccaneers secured a huge win at home against the Joondalup Wolves with players and the home crowd rising to the occasion after their coach Dayle Joseph was ejected, leading to a 20-point win. Buccs star Johny Narkle stole the show with a 33-point performance on Saturday night at Activewest Stadium, while amassing nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks as the Wolves had no answer for him. Buccs' big man Liam Hunt also impressed with yet another double-double. Hunt led the charge with 21 points, three assists and 11 rebounds. The Buccs led early in the first quarter with a quick start for the home side. Hunt got the ball rolling for the Buccs with the first points of the game coming from the field. Akeem Springs and Narkle also got their night started early in the first period with Narkle jumping on the scoreboard with seven points. A fightback by the Wolves in the second period saw the momentum swing in the visitors' favour, which saw Joondalup being clinical from beyond the arc while the Buccs fell off the pace as the Wolves took advantage. Joondalup led the Buccs by two points going into the main break, 49-47. It was a close third quarter with neither team able to pull away. The Wolves put a lot of attention on Narkle as the star local began to feel the pressure before an apparent missed call led to the ejection of coach Dayle Joseph. After what he believed was a missed call from one of the referees, Joseph was seen to be upset with the decision and in the referee's eyes it was enough to eject him from the game late in the third quarter. Joseph said he didn't think he deserved to be booted from the contest. 'I don't know what I did to deserve to be thrown out,' he said. 'I jumped up and down a bit, but other than that I don't know what he (the referee) saw. 'It was a heated game, the crowd probably got under his skin with some previous missed calls, so it seemed a bit reactive. 'Myself and Johny (Narkle) had already got a tech earlier in the game so it was better that I got it rather than him being ejected.' Without their coach, the Buccs were forced to stand up going into the fourth quarter, only leading by seven points. Nik DeSantis set the tone with a quick three in the last term before an onslaught from the Buccs saw them run away with the game as the crowd rose to their feet and drove the home side to the final buzzer. Joseph said the win was massive in the context of their season. 'It was a really important win for us at home considering they got the better of us earlier in the season,' he said. 'To beat them by 20 points too is really impressive from our group and to stand up when we did was pleasing.' The Buccs ran away with the win by 20 points with the final score 103-83. The victory sees the Buccs jump into the top four on the NBL1 West ladder, as they set their sights on seventh-placed Mandurah Magic this Saturday at Activewest Stadium.
