August is the peak month for burglaries – with a 28 per cent rise in break-ins, according to Tesco Insurance.
Here Phil, the founder of property advice website Move iQ, shares some of the simple ways to burglar-proof your home – from wallet-friendly deterrents like a dummy CCTV camera and alarm sticker, to smart doorbells.
FRONT FOCUSED: Most break-ins are unplanned.
Make your property look hard to enter so burglars are more likely to transfer attention elsewhere.
Phil says: 'More than a third of break-ins are made through the front door so it's essential you make it as secure as possible.
"Fit adequate deadlocks and hinges and reinforce frames when necessary.'

SECURE THE SHED: Easily accessible and usually containing valuables like tools and bikes, our outbuildings and sheds are an easy target.
Protect yours with padlocks tested to a high standard. The police suggest those with BS EN 12320 ratings.
Shed bars and glazing grilles, available from hardware stores, can reinforce entry points and windows.

And blackout window film (£5.99, from amazon.co.uk) can obscure garden goodies from unwelcome gazes.
CHANGE LOCKS: Back doors, windows and patio entry points are often overlooked, but these must also be locked.
Phil advises: 'If you have recently moved in, then you should change the locks to all your doors.
'You can't be sure who still has a set of keys.
'Consider fitting both a Yale and a double-action mortice lock for extra security.
'If you're renting, check your tenancy agreement to see if changing the locks is allowed.'
Some UPVC-style rear doors are fitted with protruding locks that can be snapped off easily, so it may be worth changing these for safer alternatives.
SMART TECH: While expensive gold-standard alarms provide great property protection, new technological advances mean there are cheaper alternatives.
Smart doorbells with video, home cameras, motion sensors and floodlights can all persuade burglars to move on.
'COMMON SENSE'
Lightbulbs, curtains and heating can also be set to timers so your home does not look unoccupied.
Many can also be linked to your phone via an app so that you can keep an eye on your property at all times.
For a cheaper option, consider a dummy CCTV camera.
The police suggest this, paired with a fake warning or alarm sticker, can be equally off-putting.
HOME ALONE: Regular deliveries piling up on your doorstep show there is nobody home.
Cancel scheduled orders from supermarkets, food suppliers or online delivery companies.
Or ask a friend to collect them for you.
A trustworthy person to water plants and pick up post can ensure your home does not look empty.
Asking a neighbour to park on your driveway works well too. But use your common sense.

Phil warns: 'Don't undo all your hard work by leaving a spare key under a plant pot!
'Opportunistic thieves will look in traditional hiding places like this.
'If you need to leave a key for others, keep it in a discreetly hidden lockbox secured to a wall.'
CHECK YOUR INSURANCE: Ensuring your paperwork is in order before shutting your suitcase is a simple way to provide peace of mind.
But it's also easily overlooked.
'EASY TO PREVENT'
Double check any insurance policies covering your belongings – building, car and contents – are still applicable while your home is unoccupied and that all details and values are up to date.
HIDE VALUABLES: Consider where you leave snatch-and-go valuables such as jewellery, wallets and laptops.
Make sure belongings are not visible though entry points.
Consider a small home safe, or hide in kitchen containers.
Phil says: 'If your door has a traditional letterbox, install a guard on the back to prevent anyone reaching in or trying to hook out nearby items.
'This type of theft is surprisingly common, but easy to prevent.'
DON'T POST PICS: If your social media accounts are not private, your photos will highlight you are not home.

Man arrested after dumped waste set on fire at Sherington
A man has been arrested after a large amount of waste was dumped and then set on fire in a said lorries tipped the waste on Friday and it was set on fire on Sunday in Sherington, Keynes City Council said it was investigating with Thames Valley Police and the Environment Agency and they were "aware of a significant quantity of waste that has been dumped and set on fire on private land".Police said a 40-year-old man from Sherington had been arrested "on suspicion of depositing controlled waste on land where there was no environment permit". The force added that he had also been arrested on suspicion of "keeping, treating or disposing of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution to the environment or harm to human health".He has been released on bail while investigations, led by the Environment Agency, agency said "the site has been confirmed as an illegal waste site".Residents said the parcel of land, off the High Street by the junction with Gun Lane, was bought at auction in December MP for Milton Keynes North, Chris Curtis, said: "This is a despicable act of vandalism and residents have rightfully been contacting me to complain." Sherington Parish Council said there was now a major multi-agency investigation into the activities on the said it "had been advised that there was nothing more it could contribute to the investigations other than continued vigilance and the noting of lorry movements and activities on site if appropriate"."The matter of the siting of caravans and the occupation of the site remains an ongoing planning issue and the subject of a Milton Keynes City Council enforcement process," a spokesperson added."We would like to thank all the villagers who have contributed for their valuable help in bringing this matter to the attention of the appropriate authorities." I'm fuming because someone keeps parking in my PRIVATE space – they park like an idiot too & ignore my notes
A RESIDENT has been left fuming thanks to a rude driver continuously parking in their private parking space. The homeowner took to Reddit to share their predicament, alongside a picture of the offending car. 1 And as well as taking up the space, which is assigned to the poster's home, the person has been ignoring their notes as well. "I have left notes yet they refuse to leave and have parked like an idiot," they sighed, showing the car parked diagonally inside the covered parking spot. The situation is made all the more annoying by the fact that the driver "torments the building" by revving the engine "late at night as well". The homeowner concluded by asking: "Is there a legal solution to this?" People were quick to comment on the post, with one explaining: "Unfortunately the law is rather backwards in this scenario. "Someone parking on your driveway, or otherwise on private property you own or are the tenant of is trespassing, and most types of trespassing are a civil offence in the UK. "The police and the local authority can do nothing unless it is abandoned - if it has tax, MOT, and insurance, you're unlikely to get anywhere on the abandoned car route." And while others had suggested putting a "hinged, locked bollard" in front of the spot to prevent the person parking there, the person warned that they could "get in some trouble" if they did that. "I've got a private space in the city and had issues with the same person using it repeatedly," someone else said. "Unless it's a managed space, there isn't a whole lot you can do. The moment furious neighbour yells 'If I die, you're for it' at student in bitter parking space row "The only thing that worked for me was blocking the car in with another car and leaving a note with my phone number on there. "I refused to let them out unless they apologised and promised not to do it again - and it worked, fortunately!" "Definitely parked like that to prevent it being towed away cleanly," another wrote. "Not that towing it would be legal anyway, in this situation at least (may or may not be in others). "This suggests they're fully aware they shouldn't be there, and are willing to be unreasonable so they can keep parking there. "Probably why the notes have gone ignored." "It's not even taxed since July 1 lol," someone else pointed out. To which the poster replied: "It's now been reported to both the council and government. "Thank you all for your help!"
