Council to chart Sabah's sustainable ocean economy

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has taken a major step towards unlocking the potential of its marine resources with the launch of the Sabah Blue Economy Council.
The council will drive sustainable ocean-based growth and boost its maritime economy.
"Through MEBS, we will coordinate policies, approve high-impact programmes and monitor the implementation of the Blue Economy Policy and Strategic Framework.
"This integrated approach will stimulate sustainable, inclusive, and competitive economic growth," said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor after chairing the cabinet meeting here.
He added that the council would drive technology transfer and innovation in the maritime sector, aligning with sustainability goals and adoption of advanced technologies.
Hajiji added that the council was a crucial step in strengthening collaboration between government agencies, academia, industry players, and communities to position Sabah as a key blue economy player in Southeast Asia.
"It reflects the state government's commitment to harnessing Sabah's marine resources, expanding investment and safeguarding the people's wellbeing through sustainable development," he said.
With this move, Hajiji said Sabah is on a stronger path towards building a future based on maritime strength and ocean-based economic prosperity.
The Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat has been appointed as the MEBS Secretariat to coordinate the council's decisions.

RM600,000 to help e-hailing workers open up EPF account in Sabah

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor posing with the Sabah Moto Day participants while sitting on a motorcycle. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): The State Government will allocate about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open up Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said a total 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF. 'I would like to announce that the State Government is allocating nearly RM600,000 to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open up their EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday. Hajiji was also glad to note that Sabah Moto Day continued to grow exponentially attracting about 60,000 motorcylists and motor enthusiasts from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei this year. The presence of many riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the general public, he said. 'I am impressed to see the support shown by all participants, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion. 'We should view this gathering from a positive perspective, as it can contribute, to some extent, to the economic generation of our state due to the large number of participants and visitors in conjunction with this programme, he said. Advising participants of the Sabah Moto Day to prioritise safety while on road, Hajiji also hoped the gathering would help create greater safety awareness among the two- wheeler enthusiasts. The Chief Minister also informed the participants that the State Government viewed youths as asset, hence various initiatives have been implemented to develop the human capital. The State Government of today had spent a total RM1.33 billion including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million specifically for talent and skills development programmes from 2021 to 2025, he said. 'This has never been done by previous state governments. We are committed to develop our youths who are our future leaders,' he said. At the end of his speech, Hajiji also led the participants to offer Al-Fatihah prayer for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.

Does Shafie have plans for Sabah's development, asks ex-Warisan rep

Norazlinah Arif called for Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor's administration to be judged on its track record of success, not baseless corruption allegations. KOTA KINABALU : A former Warisan assemblyman has questioned whether ex-Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal has any real plans to develop the state. Dismissing the Warisan president's criticism of current chief minister Hajiji Noor's government, Kunak assemblyman Norazlinah Arif said Shafie's claims of corruption within the sitting government are entirely without basis. She said any comparison between the current Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government and the previous Warisan administration led by Shafie should be grounded in their respective track records. Norazlinah said Hajiji had launched initiatives such as the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan, while advancing the state's blue economy and overseeing Sabah's oil and gas sector in an effective manner. 'This state government has a very strong people-based approach, a feature that Shafie's did not possess,' she said in an interview with FMT. Norazlinah, a two-term assemblyman, left Warisan to join Hajiji's Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah in February 2023, after Sabah Umno's attempt to unseat the chief minister fizzled out a month earlier. Umno was said to be in advanced talks with Warisan to oust the GRS-led state government at the time. Shafie has been on the offensive against Hajiji over the past year, linking an alleged mining scandal to the government. The GRS chairman, however, has consistently denied all accusations, saying he and his administration had nothing to hide, and dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. In April, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission cleared Hajiji of any wrongdoing and lauded the chief minister for giving its investigation his fullest cooperation. Separately, Banggi assemblyman Mohammad Mohamarin said the GRS-led state government has quietly resolved several longstanding issues faced by Sabahans. Mohammad, also a former Warisan member, lauded the state government's efforts, contrasting them with those of others who tend to launch initiatives to much fanfare but fail to see them through. The two-term assemblyman cited water supply issues that have long plagued his constituency, saying he had proposed a solution during the tenure of the Warisan government. However, no long-term measures were taken until Hajiji took over the top post, he said. 'Hajiji allocated a massive chunk of funds to upgrade the water treatment plant here,' he said, citing it as 'clear evidence' of the state government's effectiveness.
