Council to chart Sabah's sustainable ocean economy

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has taken a major step towards unlocking the potential of its marine resources with the launch of the Sabah Blue Economy Council. The council will drive sustainable ocean-based growth and boost its maritime economy. "Through MEBS, we will coordinate policies, approve high-impact programmes and monitor the implementation of the Blue Economy Policy and Strategic Framework. "This integrated approach will stimulate sustainable, inclusive, and competitive economic growth," said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor after chairing the cabinet meeting here. He added that the council would drive technology transfer and innovation in the maritime sector, aligning with sustainability goals and adoption of advanced technologies. Hajiji added that the council was a crucial step in strengthening collaboration between government agencies, academia, industry players, and communities to position Sabah as a key blue economy player in Southeast Asia. "It reflects the state government's commitment to harnessing Sabah's marine resources, expanding investment and safeguarding the people's wellbeing through sustainable development," he said. With this move, Hajiji said Sabah is on a stronger path towards building a future based on maritime strength and ocean-based economic prosperity. The Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat has been appointed as the MEBS Secretariat to coordinate the council's decisions.
