NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso had three hits and an RBI and the New York Mets overcame the loss of starting pitcher Griffin Canning to injury in the third inning Thursday night for a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves and a split of the four-game series.
The Mets, who had lost 10 of 11 games before a 7-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday night, moved back into first place in the NL East, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Canning worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings before suffering a left ankle injury on a non-contact play while trying to race off the mound. After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said it 'looks like an Achilles injury.' The team said he would undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury.
After Canning left, four relievers limited the Braves to two hits the rest of the way. Austin Warren (1-0) replaced Canning and threw 2 1/3 one-hit innings.
Tyrone Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly against Grant Holmes (4-7) in the fourth, and Alonso doubled the lead with a run-scoring hit in the fifth. Jeff McNeil added a two-run single in the seventh.
Holmes allowed two runs and six hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings.

Tampa Bay starters have thrown 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Royals were also shut out on Wednesday and scored one run in their three losses to the Rays. Kansas City has gone 14-27 (.341) — third worst in the majors over that span — since starting the season 24-16 (.600).
CUBS 3, CARDINALS 0
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shota Imanaga returned from the injured list to throw five innings of one-hit ball, lifting Chicago to a victory over St. Louis for a split of a four-game series.
Michael Busch homered and singled and Carson Kelly also had two hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs.
St. Louis was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Five Chicago pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

A left hamstring strain cost Imanaga (4-2) nearly two months. In his Busch Stadium debut, Imanaga gave up a first-inning single to Masyn Winn and then retired 10 batters before issuing his lone walk.
Imanaga, an All-Star last season as a rookie, lowered his ERA to 2.54.
Daniel Palencia allowed the first to batters to reach before striking out the side in the ninth for his eighth save in nine opportunities.
Busch hit a 3-2 fastball from Andre Pallante (5-4) over the wall in right field in the second inning. He scored again in the fourth when Ian Happ drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk.

ASTROS 2, PHILLIES 1
HOUSTON (AP) — Cam Smith hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to give Houston a win over Philadelphia.

Hunter Brown lowered his league best ERA to 1.74 by scattering three singles over seven shutout innings, with nine strikeouts. He did not allow a runner to reach second base.
Bryan Abreu (3-3) struck out Trea Turner to end the eighth, and then struck out Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Nick Castellanos in the ninth.
Rafael Marchán had two of the Phillies' four hits. Bryson Stott reached base twice and scored the Phillies' lone run.

Gausman (6-6) gave up one walk on 104 pitches with six strikeouts and reliever Chad Green finished the Guardians' fifth shutout of the season.
Addison Barger led off the ninth with a single, Ernie Clement and Jonatan Clase each drew a walk to load the bases with one out and pinch-hitter Kirk's single scored Barger and Clement. Clase scored on a throwing error by left fielder Steven Kwan, one of four by Cleveland.

Bibee (4-8) gave up three hits and two runs in six innings.
DODGERS 3, ROCKIES 1
DENVER (AP) — Clayton Kershaw struck out five to inch closer to 3,000, Shohei Ohtani hit his 28th home run, and Los Angeles beat Colorado.
Kershaw (4-0) struck out five in six innings for his fourth straight win and has 2,997 strikeouts over his 18-year career — three short of becoming the 20th major leaguer and the third active pitcher to reach 3,000.
Ohtani's 419-foot homer to right-center gave the Dodgers a 3-1 lead in the seventh.
Mookie Betts had two hits and an RBI and Freddie Freeman had an RBI single for the Dodgers, who have won 10 in a row against the Rockies — six this season.

The Dodgers, who trailed 1-0 after Brenton Doyle homered off Kershaw in the second, had their major league-high 31st comeback victory.
Tanner Scott pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 21 chances.
MARLINS 12, GIANTS 5
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kyle Stowers and Agustín Ramírez each homered and Miami beat San Francisco to complete a three-game series sweep.

The Marlins broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth on Eric Wagaman's two-run double in a three-run inning.
Stowers hit a three-run homer in the first and Ramírez hit a two-run shot in the third — both off Giants starter Hayden Birdsong — to give Miami a 5-0 lead.
Devers hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and the Giants tied it in the fourth when June Hoo Lee's leadoff triple keyed a three-run inning.
Birdsong (3-2) allowed seven runs and four hits with four walks in four-plus innings.
TWINS 10, MARINERS 1
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Trevor Larnach homered with three RBIs after Simeon Woods Richardson started with five scoreless innings, and Minnesota beat Seattle after a rain delay of 4 hours and 22 minutes.

Brooks Lee led off an eight-run sixth against reliever Zach Pop with a home run. Then came RBI doubles from Byron Buxton and Willi Castro, a two-run single by Carlos Correa and a two-run homer from Matt Wallner in the highest-scoring inning for the Twins since a nine-run outburst in the first at New York on April 13, 2023.
Woods Richardson (3-4) produced a superb follow-up to the six scoreless innings Joe Ryan threw in a 2-0 victory on Wednesday, helping the Twins (39-42) win consecutive games for the first time since taking three straight from June 3-5. They lost 15 of 18 after that.
Emerson Hancock (3-4) started with four scoreless innings for the Mariners before Larnach's two-run shot in the fifth.
Mariners catcher Mitch Garver left in the fifth inning when Wallner fouled a ball off his mask, forcing star Cal Raleigh to finish behind the plate in forfeiture of the designated hitter.

Bucs Announce Major Contract News For Todd Bowles and GM Jason Licht

Bucs Announce Major Contract News For Todd Bowles and GM Jason Licht originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jason Licht and Todd Bowles have worked together for a number of years since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The head coach-general manager dynamic has only existed for the last three. Advertisement Bowles and Licht have carried on the success that produced a Super Bowl and multiple playoff appearances in the years that preceded the former taking over the head coaching job. Count three more playoff appearances and three more NFC South titles. The Bucs have built a stable playoff team that has continued to improve each season. Recognizing their achievement and importance to the franchise, Tampa Bay has locked up both for the foreseeable future. The team announced Thursday multiyear extensions for Bowles and Licht. "Jason and Todd's leadership has been critical to our organization's success. The winning culture they have established has us well positioned for the future," Buccaneers owner/co-chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement. "The continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships." Advertisement The head coach's deal stands for three more years as he prepares to enter his fourth year at the helm in Tampa Bay. Bowles comes off a 10-7 season that saw the Bucs win six of their last seven games to reclaim the crown in the South. "I am excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals," Bowles said. "My family loves Tampa and we're looking forward to delivering more great moments for our fans in the coming seasons." Licht remains one of the longest tenured executives in the NFL, preparing for his 12th season with the Bucs. He was instrumental in the blockbuster Tom Brady signing in 2020 that led to the franchise's second Super Bowl victory the following season. Advertisement Since then, Licht has engineered the transition from the Brady years to now aiding the Baker Mayfield resurgence with the Bucs, maintaining key franchise pieces in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin Jr, Tristan Wirfs and others along the way. While Licht's future was more secure, there were some silent whispers about what a setback year could mean for Bowles' future as the head coach. Instead, the Bucs make a clear commitment to their leadership in two key areas for the coming years, investing in a continuation of the progress shown each of the last three seasons. Bill Belichick Rumor Update as NFL Contender Announces Major Move

Bill Belichick Rumor Update as NFL Contender Announces Major Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently suggested that Bill Belichick may have eyes on not just a return to the NFL, but also on being the head coach of the 2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Advertisement His "report'' - such as it was - centered on his claim wrote that Tar Heels general manager Mike Lombardi (Belichick's right-hand man) was going around suggesting that present Bucs coach Todd Bowles might be interested in retiring after this season. Florio was curious what would motivate Lombardi to spread such a rumor. ... while spreading the rumor himself. "So why would Lombardi be trying to speak a vacancy into existence? Maybe because that's one of the jobs Belichick would want," Florio wrote. "Even with all of the craziness that has happened of late, the Bucs can't be ruled out as a potential destination for Belichick. ... "So I feel like Belichick has been eyeballing the Bucs.'' Advertisement Oh. Florio - who also this offseason claimed hilariously, "I don't like to traffic in (rumors)'' - didn't have his facts straight then. And today? It's all even more embarrassing, as not only is Bowles, 61, not retiring ... He just signed a contract extension on Thursday. The Buccaneers have a coach that has won three straight division championships. Belichick already has a job with the North Carolina Tar Heels. ... even though Florio seems to write almost daily about how he "feels'' Belichick (and his right-hand woman Jordon Hudson) might leave UNC. "Feelings'' are nice. Facts are what matter. The Buccaneers announced contract extensions Thursday morning for both general manager Jason Licht and head coach Bowles. This comes on the heels of another successful year for the franchise. Advertisement Over the course of the last year the Bucs have navigated multiple major coaching staff changes, maintained key veterans through free agency, drafted immediate contributors across the roster and won the NFC South for a fourth straight season. Much of that credit belongs to both Bowles and Licht. ... And it is the height of disrespect to Bowles that PFT seems to fail to recognize that. Bowles has kept the Bucs atop their division since taking over in 2022 and increased the team's win total by one each season. He is now being rewarded for that ... and probably shouldn't hold his breath waiting for an apology from Mike Florio.
