Tech univs, engg colleges in UP to help students fight off depression, suicidal thoughts
There are three state technical universities in the state. AKTU in Lucknow, Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU) in Kanpur (autonomous in nature) and Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology, Gorakhpur. Besides, there are 800 private colleges that are affiliated to AKTU in addition to 15 odd government engineering colleges.
In October last year, a B Tech final year student of Government Engineering College in Kannauj died by suicide in his hostel room. This is not the only incident that occurred in the state. IIT Kanpur alone witnessed a number of similar incidents.
Additional chief secretary (technical education) Narendra Bhushan here on Friday sent a message in Whatsapp group to the vice chancellors and principals of engineering and polytechnic colleges to explore how to address the problem in their respective institutions. Bhushan reminded them about the Kannuaj incident and told VCs and heads of the institutions to do some kind of brainstorming session and suggest how they intend to go about it.
'We must address the problem right at the start of the new academic session. Many of our students come from rural pockets who may not be well versed in English. And there is a possibility that they may not find it comfortable to cope with the new environment. In the light of these, I have asked the vice chancellors to address the issue in their respective institutions,' Bhushan said.
Confirming the development, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) vice chancellor Prof JP Pandey said, 'Yes, we have received one message from the ACS. It is a welcome step. Soon we will issue detailed guidelines or advisory to all the colleges on how they can help students overcome such hardships. Mentor mentee programmes will be rolled out and teachers will monitor students closely and observe their actions. If they see any abnormal thing, such students will be put before a psychologist or a counsellor for successive sessions till they recover fully.'
'Early intervention is key to suicide prevention. It is important for people to know, especially with growing reports of youth suicides these days, that it is not enough to chalk up suicide deaths to simply depression,' the VC added.

Japanese scholar dies after 12-day stay at MCH
1 2 Kolkata: The 75-year-old Japanese national, Micihihiro Kata, who was receiving medical care at Medical College Hospital Kolkata (MCHK) died on Tuesday morning. In a dilemma as to whom to hand over the his body, the hospital authority has written to Swasthya Bhawan as well as the Japanese consulate. Kata was first admitted to Manipal Dhakuria on June 25 after he fell seriously ill during an event in Kolkata by J Krishnamurthy Foundation, where the writer and researcher was invited to deliver a lecture. Doctors detected multiple complications, including renal failure and E coli infection. He was under the medical care of the private hospital for about a month. As his condition deteriorated and no one was footing his treatment bill, he was shifted to the state-run medical college on July 24 after the Dhakuria hospital consulted the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission. It was reported that Kata lived alone in his native place in Japan. At the MCHK, doctors detected him with stomach cancer, and his condition was being monitored by a five-member medical board in the hospital's ICU. With his condition deteriorating, he was put on ventilation on Monday. He was already in very bad shape when he was brought here. Our doctors tried their best but could not save him. We have informed the higher authority about this death, asking for guidance as to whom to hand over the body. We have also communicated the same to the Japanese consulate. Until the matter is resolved, the body will remain in our custody," said pharmacology professor Anjan Adhikari, MSVP MCHK. Earlier, the hospital authority wrote to the health department officials about the dilemma the hospital was facing due to communication and dietary issues. Kata could not communicate in English and refused the hospital food served to all other patients. He would often request good quality biscuits and coffee, which were not part of the hospital's patient food chart. The hospital also wrote to the Japanese consulate on this issue. "Last Friday, an official from the Japan consulate visited him with some Japanese food. That was the only time the patient had a mouthful of food happily without making any fuss. Otherwise, we had to keep him on IV fluid for his nutritional requirements as he would refuse the hospital food due to dietary preference," added Adhikari. MCHK sources said that the Japanese Embassy in Delhi responded to its email, saying that embassy officials are trying to locate some relatives of Kata in Tokyo so that the body can be handed over to them.

Collector Conducts Surprise Visit to Anganwadi Center, Emphasizes Timely Nutrition and Child Welfare
Gadwal: District Collector B.M. Santosh emphasized the importance of ensuring timely delivery of nutritious food to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and young children through Anganwadi centers. On Tuesday, the Collector conducted a surprise inspection at the Anganwadi center located in Ganjipet area of Gadwal town. During the visit, he interacted with staff and inquired about the services being provided to the children and mothers at the center. He also engaged children in learning English alphabets and appreciated their responses, stating that the goal should be to enable every child to confidently participate and learn. The Collector stressed the importance of providing quality foundational education to children to strengthen their early learning. He personally checked the height and weight of the children, advising staff to pay special attention to those showing signs of undernutrition. He examined the mobile application used for data entry and directed the Anganwadi teacher to ensure accurate and systematic recording of information as per guidelines. Highlighting the importance of preventing nutritional deficiencies such as SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition) and MAM (Moderate Acute Malnutrition), he instructed that children be given a balanced and adequate diet to maintain good health. Further, the Collector urged regular updates on nutrition-related information using the Poshan Tracker and NHFS (National Health and Family Survey) mobile apps. He also emphasized continuous monitoring of the health of pregnant women and educating them on the importance of nutritional intake during pregnancy. He instructed that all necessary amenities including proper food, hygiene, and basic facilities be maintained to ensure that children at Anganwadi centers do not face any hardships. The centers must be run efficiently and effectively for the well-being of all beneficiaries. Anganwadi teachers Razia, Lakshmi, and Narasimha, among others, participated in the program.

Apply by August 7 at Jamui's District Employment Office Educated job seekers in Bihar now have a rare opportunity to work abroad, with the state government opening up 5,000 job vacancies in Israel for the role of home-based caregivers. The Labour Resources Department has issued an official call for applications, with most of the positions earmarked for women. According to a public notification from the District Employment Office in Jamui, these overseas roles are being facilitated under an agreement with Israel, offering monthly salaries equivalent to Rs 1.61 lakh (USD 1,870 or 6,247.67 Israeli New Shekel). The contractual jobs span an initial two-year period, with an option for extension based on performance and further requirements. Eligibility Criteria Applicants must be between 25 and 45 years old, weigh at least 45 kg, and have a minimum height of 1.5 metres. A Class 10 pass certificate is the minimum educational requirement, along with proven proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English. A valid passport is also mandatory. While 90 percent of the posts will be reserved for women, the remaining 10 percent are open to men. Preference will be given to female candidates with prior training in General Duty Assistant (GDA), Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM), General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM), Diploma in Senior Care (DSC Nursing), or Post-BSc Nursing. Importantly, women who have never worked or traveled to Israel before will be given priority. Applicants must also be mentally and physically fit. A certificate from an authorised government agency attesting to eligibility is required, along with proof of completion of a care course involving at least 990 hours of training, including on-the-job training (OJT). Only courses and institutions recognised by the Centre will be considered valid. Application Deadline Selected candidates will be required to work six days a week. The recruitment process is being coordinated by the District Employment Office in Jamui, where interested candidates must submit applications before August 7.
