Those who tuned in for the Season 3 premiere last weekend will remember that Taissa Farmiga's Gladys Russell ran away from home in the middle of the night as a rebellious response to her mother Bertha's rumored arranging for The Duke of Buckingham to come back to their mansion. It turns out she ran away to the home of her latest suitor Billy Carlton (Matt Walker) and his mother Joan (Victoria Clark).
'For every generation, marriage is a crapshoot. Nowadays, we see much more of each other than they did in the 19th century. We live together more, and we sleep together, and we do all of these things, but at the end, you don't really know the person you've married until you married them,' series creator Julian Fellowes told Deadline. 'The modern world always likes to pretend that it deals with everything better than any previous generation, but you can't take the luck element out of marriage.'
This season, Bertha has her eyes on the prize of an esteemed husband for her daughter, and not just anyone will do. Even though Gladys claims she loves Billy Carlton, a suitor she covertly met up with at the opera thanks to the secrecy of Mrs. Fish and Gladys' brother Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), Bertha firmly rejects him as a potential husband for Gladys.
When Mr. George Russell (Morgan Spector) comes home from Morenci, Arizona where he is tending to railroad business, he is greeted with a heated discussion between mother, daughter and son about Gladys' lack of agency in who she can marry. The railroad tycoon feels a bit more conflicted about where Gladys' life could be headed, because he did promise her that she could marry for love.
Those who have watched the period drama since Season 1 may remember that Gladys also had high hopes for Tom Blyth's Archie Baldwin, one of her suitors before she was even out in society, but it was her father who turned down the young man at the time through a twisted job offer to bribe him.
'I mean, arranged marriages were the norm in this period, and I mean even today, there are still places where people have arranged marriages, sometimes they work out,' Spector told Deadline. 'People do fall in love with each other. Some of those marriages really last. Some of them are very happy. It's not impossible that there can be joy and real fulfillment in those relationships.'
Even after Billy attempted to approach Mr. Russell to ask his blessing for a proposal to Gladys and he chickens out at the Young Women's Christian Association benefit — hosted by Aurora Fayne (Kelli O'Hara) and her husband Charles who is desperate for a divorce, George states to his wife that the young man didn't get a chance to present his argument. Bertha doubles down on her desire for her daughter's future to be one of empowerment, influence and high status.
'A lot of the world still operates on the basis of arranged marriages. We always feel superior about that, but it's not safe to feel superior about anything. I think that some aspects of it work better and some don't, and that's life. We take life as it comes and we take chances,' Fellowes said. 'The first few years [of marriage], you get to know your wife or your husband, and sometimes it comes as a pleasant surprise, as aspects of their personality are much more interesting than you'd realize. Other times, it's the reverse. I'm not sure there's any kind of insurance you can take out against that. I think that's how life is.'
Unfortunately for Gladys, it looks as if her mother got what she wanted in a way because Billy showed up in the last minutes of Season 3 Episode 2 to call off their relationship and any potential engagement. With Hector, the Duke of Buckingham's return at the end of the third season's second episode — attorney in tow — only time will tell what path Gladys, still teary-eyed and looking like a deer in the headlights, ends up walking amidst the wishes of her mother. As Mr. Russell tells his daughter, he is just as surprised as she is at what this could signal.

But at Jellystone Park locations, some of the busiest weekends are actually in September and October. 'Families love our fall festival and Halloween-themed weekends,' said Trent Hershenson, vice president of marketing for Camp Jellystone, which franchises more than 75 Jellystone Park locations across North America in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences. Jellystone Park's fall themed weekends include everything from scarecrow making and fall crafts to apple bobbing and pumpkin spice cooking competitions. Halloween-themed weekends include trick-or-treating, costume contests, magic pumpkin patches, campsite and cabin decorating contests, and, at some locations, haunted houses, mummy wrapping and zombie chase activities. 'Most locations offer a combination of scary and not-so-scary experiences so families can choose the weekends with the types of activities that best fit their children,' Hershenson said. Here's a sampling of the activities planned this fall at Jellystone Park locations across the country: — Big Prairie, Ohio (Holmes County): This location will have an 'Apple Dumpling Festival Weekend' September 26-28 with hands-on workshops on how to make dumplings. There will also be cider pressing, apple decorating contests, wagon rides, barrel rides, live music, craft vendors, and Grandma Ruth's famous apple dumplings. On October 3-5 the park will have a 'Harvest Hoedown Cider & Donuts Weekend' with cider tasting, fresh-made hot apple cider, and fresh-baked spiced donuts. There will also be a tractor-pulled wagon ride, a magic pumpkin ride, costume contests, and trick-or-treating. The weekend of October 10-12 will be a 'Fall Flannel Festival' that includes a flannel fashion contest and lumberjack-inspired games as well as pine cone crafts, fall ceramics, a magic pumpkin ride, a costume contest, and trick-or-treating. A 'Fall Foliage Fiesta' is set for October 17-19 with scenic hikes, nature photography contests, pumpkin painting, and a costume parade. — Burleson, Texas: This location offers six consecutive fall weekends beginning the last weekend in September. Activities include a pumpkin decorating contest, a costume fashion show, a campsite decorating contest, a trick-or-treat trail, and an annual haunt spectacle. Three 'Gobble 'Til You Wobble' weekends are also scheduled beginning Nov. 7-9. Activities include a pumpkin pie eating contest, a turkey scavenger hunt, a gobble contest, turkey trot races, and a pumpkin spice cooking competition with sweet and savory categories. — Caledonia, Wisconsin (Just Outside Milwaukee): This location will have six consecutive weekends of fall and Halloween fun, starting with a fall fiesta the weekend of Sept. 5-7 with apple bobbing, apple bowling, fall harvest trivia, magic pumpkin seeds, a costume contest, and trick-or-treating. Oct. 3-5 is a 'Wizards and Warlocks Weekend' with magical crafts and potions while Oct. 17-19 includes all kinds of fall and Halloween fun, including a campsite decorating contest and a haunted trail. — Cochran, Georgia: This location will have a chocolate lovers weekend the last weekend of September with chocolate-themed crafts, sweet treats, and various chocolate challenges, including a chocolate slide. Halloween weekends are planned for the last two weekends of October with pumpkin carving, trick or treating and spooky surprises. — Endicott, New York (Binghamton Area): This location will have a 'Magical Pumpkin Weekend' Sept. 19-21. Halloween activities with trick-or-treating begin the last weekend of September and run through Oct. 24-26. A Zombie Apocalypse weekend is scheduled for Oct. 24-26 while a Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) weekend is set for Oct. 30-Nov. 2 with vibrant festivities, crafts, and music. A 'Gratitude Weekend' will take place Nov. 7-9 with gratitude-themed activities, campfire storytelling, and moments to reflect with family. — Jamestown, New York (Chautauqua County): Three weekends with trick-or-treating and other Halloween activities are scheduled at this location beginning the last weekend of September. — Lake Charles, Louisiana: Every weekend in October has some kind of frightful activity at this location. Activities range from mummy wrapping relays and scavenger hunts Oct. 10-12 to zombie chases Oct. 17-19 and a best wicked witch laugh contest Oct. 24-26 while Halloween weekend includes a costume parade and a bone-chilling haunted trail. November activities include an autumn harvest weekend Nov. 7-9 with candle making, a nature scavenger hunt, and leaf art. Warner Bros. Discovery Hits Profit Turnaround, Thanks To Theaters, Not TV
Warner Bros. Discovery (NASDAQ: WBD) stock gave up its gains after it reported fiscal second-quarter results on Thursday. The company reported a quarterly revenue of $9.81 billion, flat year-on-year (Y/Y) ex-FX growth, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $9.72 billion. The earnings per share (EPS) of 63 cents topped the analyst consensus estimate of 22-cent loss. The company reported a net income of $1.58 billion, compared to a loss of $9.99 billion Y/Y. WBD reported an adjusted EBITDA of $1.95 billion, a 9% ex-FX revenues were flat ex-FX at $4.89 billion due to domestic linear pay-TV subscriber declines. Advertising revenues decreased 10% ex-FX at $2.22 billion due to domestic linear audience declines. Content revenues increased 16% ex-FX to $2.47 billion, primarily driven by higher box office revenues due to the stronger performance of the theatrical releases in the current year quarter. In the quarter, WBD generated $983 million in operating cash flow and $702 million in free cash flow and held $4.9 billion in cash and equivalents. Streaming The company ended the quarter with 125.7 million subscribers versus 103.3 million Y/Y and 122.3 million quarter-over-quarter (Q/Q). Streaming revenues increased 8% ex-FX to $2.79 billion. Distribution revenue increased 9% ex-FX due to a 22% increase in subscribers following HBO Max's continued global expansion and new distribution deals. Advertising revenue increased 17% ex-FX, primarily driven by increased ad-lite subscribers, partially offset by domestic pricing pressures. Global streaming ARPU decreased 11% ex-FX to $7.14, primarily attributable to growth in lower ARPU international markets and an 8% decrease in domestic streaming ARPU to $11.16. The reduction in domestic streaming ARPU was mainly driven by the broader wholesale distribution of HBO Max Basic with Ads. Content revenue decreased 21% ex-FX, primarily due to the launch of HBO Max in new international markets, which resulted in lower third-party licensing. Content revenue increased 59% ex-FX. Theatrical revenue increased 38% ex-FX, primarily due to the strong box office performance of A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Final Destination: Bloodlines in the quarter. Games revenue decreased 14% ex-FX primarily due to no releases in the current year. Adjusted EBITDA for the Studios Segment was $863 million, up from $210 million Y/Y. Global Linear Networks Global Linear Networks revenues decreased 9% ex-FX to $4.80 billion. Distribution revenue declined 7% ex-FX, driven by a 9% decrease in domestic linear pay TV subscribers. Advertising revenue decreased 13% ex-FX, primarily due to 23% declines in domestic networks' audience. Content revenue decreased 2% ex-FX, primarily due to the timing of third-party licensing deals. Outlook Warner Bros. Studios segment expects to reach at least $2.4 billion in adjusted EBITDA for the full year, advancing toward its $3 billion goal. Warner Bros. projects $1.3 billion in streaming adjusted EBITDA for full-year 2025. 'We are well underway in executing WBD's next chapter following the announced separation of Warner Bros. (Streaming & Studios) and Discovery Global Media (Global Networks).
