for private vehicle owners. The new prepaid plan is aimed at simplifying
toll payments
and reducing congestion on highways.
The scheme, operating under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) framework, is available for non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. For a one-time payment of ₹3,000, vehicle owners get up to 200 toll plaza crossings or one year of validity, whichever comes first.

Users Report Glitches
Soon after the rollout, several users took to social media (X) reporting technical issues while recharging or using the pass.
'After purchasing the FASTag annual pass for my vehicle, the payment shows complete but the pass doesn't appear in order history,' one user wrote.
Another complained, 'Even though I bought the annual pass, FASTag balance still got deducted at eligible toll plazas. Please refund the amount. Even the 1033 helpline isn't working.'
A third noted that the pass is 'not applicable on the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway.'

Road ministry issues SoP to remove highway encroachments

NEW DELHI: As part of its ongoing efforts to make national highways safer and obstruction-free, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a fresh Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for identification, reporting, and removal of unauthorised occupations on national highways. The new guidelines also outline the recovery of costs incurred for removal of unauthorised occupation and strengthening measures for traffic regulation. According to the directive, all regional and project-level officers of MoRTH, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) must inspect highways at regular intervals; at least once every three months at the regional level and once a month at the divisional or project level. Contractors, concessionaires and supervision consultants have also been directed to remain vigilant against encroachments and report them promptly. The SoP also mandates drone surveys and aerial imaging mandatory. During highway road construction, such surveys must be carried out quarterly, while in the operation and maintenance stage, the frequency will vary depending on the location--monthly in large urban areas, quarterly in smaller towns, and once every six months in rural stretches. Reports will be uploaded to the Government's 'Datalake' portal—central repository--for record-keeping and follow-up action. The ministry has empowered highway administration officials and district magistrates (DMs) to act swiftly against encroachments. Field officers must first issue preliminary notices, with the assistance of local administrations and police if necessary. If encroachments persist, DMs will step in to enforce removal, impose fines, and recover costs. The penalties--as per the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002--include fines of up to Rs 500 per square metre of encroached land, or in cases where this is less than the land's cost, an equivalent amount to the land value. Costs for removal and repair will also be recovered from violators. The SoP also mandates the creation of a dedicated Drone Analytics Management System for monthly monitoring of encroachments using satellite imagery and drone data. 'A dedicated Drone Analytics Management System shall be built up in the designated portal for this purpose and all regional officers of Road Wing/ NHAI/ NHIDCL shall ensure monthly monitoring of the extent and removal of unauthorized occupation on the National Highways in their respective jurisdiction,' read the SoP. Unresolved cases will be escalated to state governments and, if necessary, to the Highway Administration for intervention.

Why Are Road Milestones In India In Different Colours? 99% Don't Know This

Last Updated: In India, milestone colours like yellow, green, blue, black, or orange, indicate the type of road: national, state, city, or village. Each hue tells a different story Have you ever noticed the milestones along roads in India indicating how many kilometres remain to your destination? These milestones come in different colours, yellow and white, green and white, blue or black and white, and orange and white. But have you ever wondered why the colours vary? Each colour has a specific purpose and tells us something about the type of road. So how can one interpret these colours, and how do they help in identifying the road category? Let's explore in detail. A milestone painted yellow on the top and white on the bottom signifies a National Highway. These roads connect major cities and states across the country, designed for long-distance travel and fast-moving vehicles. They are maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Examples include NH-44, which runs from Srinagar to Kanyakumari, and NH-19, stretching from Delhi to Kolkata. Yellow is used because it's highly visible across various terrains and weather conditions. A milestone with green on the top and white on the bottom indicates a State Highway. These roads connect cities and towns within a particular state and fall under the responsibility of the respective state government. Examples include SH-1 in Telangana and SH-48 in Andhra Pradesh. As State Highways serve regional connectivity, green is used to reflect that local purpose. Should you spot a milestone painted blue or black on the top and white at the bottom, it denotes a city road or district road. These roads typically connect urban centres, towns, or municipalities and are designed to support city traffic. Orange And White Milestones An orange and white milestone signifies a village road, usually constructed under rural development schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Orange here symbolises rural connectivity and development, indicating roads built to connect villages. Why Road Milestone Colours Matter? Understanding these colour codes helps you easily identify the jurisdiction and function of the road you're travelling on. This knowledge is particularly useful when planning a journey or navigating unfamiliar areas. For instance, if you intend to travel on a National Highway but find yourself on a State Highway instead, recognising the milestone colours can help you course-correct quickly. So, next time you're on the road, take a moment to observe the colours of the milestones around you; they might just tell you more than you think. view comments First Published: August 16, 2025, 14:19 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Govt implements ₹3,000 FASTag pass for private vehicles

State-owned NHAI has implemented the FASTag annual pass across the country from Friday to encourage the use of technology to enhance 'ease of living' for the citizens, according to an official statement. The statement said the annual pass has received an overwhelming response from the national highway users. "Till 4:30 p.m. on the first day of the implementation, around 1.2 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and about 1.24 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plazas," it added. Zip through highways: ₹3,000 FASTag pass offers unlimited travel from Aug 15 The statement said that providing a seamless and economical travel option to national highway users, the FASTag Annual Pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year's validity or 200 toll plaza crossings on National Highways and Expressways across the country. The annual pass is applicable to all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra App or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the Electronic Toll Collection system in the country, the statement said. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the National Highways and Expressways more economical and seamless, it added.
