TSG take on World Tour giants in Spain

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) began their Spanish classics campaign on a mixed note at the Terres de L´Ebre Classic yesterday (July 22).
TSG's foreign riders achieved decent results with Stefan de Bod coming in 24th (+2:01s), Mathias Bregnhoj was 33rd (+2:59s), Vadim Pronskiy was 36th (+3:05s) while Anatolii Budiak was 51st (+5:28s) from over 120 riders who started the race.
TSG's local trio Kee Zhe Yie, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff, however, did not finish the 185.8 kilometre race which started in Roquetes and ended in Tortosa, featuring a brace of category three climbs.
The pace was strong from the start as the UCI 1.1 race featured UCI WorldTeam squads from UAE Team Emirates, XDS Astana Team, Movistar Team and EF Education-EasyPost.
Team Emirates' Isaac del Toro - runner-up at this year's Giro d'Italia - claimed victory in 4:23:58s. Astana's Christian Scaroni came in second (+46s) while EF Education-EasyPost's Lukas Nerurkar (+51s) completed the podium.
Davide Formolo (8th, Movistar) and Diego Ulissi (9th, Astana) were among the other big names in the top-10.
TSG riders will next head to the Basque Country for the Ordiziako Classic (167km) on Friday (July 25).
They will conclude their campaign in Spain with the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race (172.2km) on Aug 3. All three events are UCI 1.1 races which are part of the UCI European Tour.

Farizal hopes every keeper in JDT gets chance to shine via smart rotation

Set for kick-off: Players and officials at the official launch of Astro as the Super League's broadcaster for a third consecutive season yesterday. KUALA LUMPUR: Former national goalkeeper Farizal Marlias is backing Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT)'s deep goalkeeping unit to shine this Super League season, provided there's smart rotation and healthy competition between the posts. With Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubiaurre and Spanish-Malaysian prospect Christian Abad joining the squad, and national No. 1 Ahmad Syihan Hazmi already in the mix, JDT's goalkeeping department is stacked with quality. For Farizal, who played for a decade at JDT from 2015 to 2025, this is an ideal scenario but one that must be managed well. 'I see it this way - I hope the goalkeepers can be rotated. I'm really hoping for that,' said the 39-year-old, who also previously featured for Perak and Selangor. 'Syihan is performing at a high level and represents the national team. With the volume of matches and competitions, rotating based on form and match needs would be the most effective approach.' Farizal was speaking at the official launch of Astro as the Super League's broadcaster for a third consecutive season, held at Marriott Hotel yesterday. Now transitioning into a punditry role, Farizal will be a key voice this season as he offers insights from the studio. When asked about JDT's chances in 2025, he did not hesitate. 'Every team must be physically and mentally ready for the season. At JDT, the squad depth is exceptional. They have the quality to compete in every competition they enter. The team are ready.' Farizal also weighed in on the broader landscape of the Super League, particularly the challengers looking to dethrone JDT. 'Selangor's recent pre-season form has been a little worrying, but I hope they can bounce back and have a positive impact on the league,' he said. 'Matches between JDT and Selangor have always been fiery and entertaining. We miss that intensity and quality - I hope to see it again in the Charity Shield on August 8.'

NSC awaits MNCF's final plan for 2025 SEA Games cycling funding

THE National Sports Council (NSC) has yet to finalise funding for the national cycling team's 2025 SEA Games preparations, pending an official decision from the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF). NSC Director-General Jefri Ngadirin stated that MNCF's Council Members' Meeting this Saturday will determine the final plans, cyclist selection, and budget requirements. 'MNCF has shortlisted four cyclists each from TSG (Terengganu Cycling Team) and MPC (Malaysia Pro Cycling), plus one from the national team. Once confirmed, we'll discuss funding with NSC,' Jefri said after the 39th ASEAN Malaysian Women's Amateur Open Championship closing ceremony at Templer Park Country Club. When asked about MNCF's requested budget, Jefri emphasised that clarity in planning is crucial. 'Without a solid plan, funding decisions are difficult,' he added. Earlier, TSG and MPC warned they wouldn't release cyclists if their RM250,000 budget request was denied. NSC, however, ruled out additional funds for MNCF. - Bernama

Funding Not Finalised, Awaiting MNCF's Plan

RAWANG, July 31 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) is still awaiting an official decision from the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) before finalising the amount of funding to be allocated for the national cycling team's preparations for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. NSC Director-General Jefri Ngadirin said the delay is due to MNCF's scheduled Council Members' Meeting this Saturday, where it will finalise its plans, list of cyclists, and funding requirements for the biennial games. 'MNCF has already made an initial selection of four cyclists each from TSG (Terengganu Cycling Team) and MPC (Malaysia Pro Cycling), and one from the national team. bootstrap slideshow 'MNCF will make the final decision and confirm the list of cyclists. Only after that will discussions be held with NSC regarding preparations for the national team's participation in the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand,' he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the 39th ASEAN Malaysian Women's Amateur Open Championship at Templer Park Country Club here today. Meanwhile, when asked about the amount of budget requested by MNCF from NSC for the 2025 SEA Games, Jefri stated that it would all be determined after the meeting. 'Most importantly, their planning must be clear, and only then can we translate it into funding. Without a plan, it's difficult to make a decision,' he said. Previously, TSG and MPC had stated that if the additional RM250,000 budget they requested was not approved, they would not release their cyclists to represent the country at the games. However, the NSC had earlier announced that no additional budget would be provided to MNCF and only the remaining allocation of RM196,000 could be used – an amount deemed irrelevant given current costs. -- BERNAMA
