TSG take on World Tour giants in Spain
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) began their Spanish classics campaign on a mixed note at the Terres de L´Ebre Classic yesterday (July 22).
TSG's foreign riders achieved decent results with Stefan de Bod coming in 24th (+2:01s), Mathias Bregnhoj was 33rd (+2:59s), Vadim Pronskiy was 36th (+3:05s) while Anatolii Budiak was 51st (+5:28s) from over 120 riders who started the race.
TSG's local trio Kee Zhe Yie, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff, however, did not finish the 185.8 kilometre race which started in Roquetes and ended in Tortosa, featuring a brace of category three climbs.
The pace was strong from the start as the UCI 1.1 race featured UCI WorldTeam squads from UAE Team Emirates, XDS Astana Team, Movistar Team and EF Education-EasyPost.
Team Emirates' Isaac del Toro - runner-up at this year's Giro d'Italia - claimed victory in 4:23:58s. Astana's Christian Scaroni came in second (+46s) while EF Education-EasyPost's Lukas Nerurkar (+51s) completed the podium.
Davide Formolo (8th, Movistar) and Diego Ulissi (9th, Astana) were among the other big names in the top-10.
TSG riders will next head to the Basque Country for the Ordiziako Classic (167km) on Friday (July 25).
They will conclude their campaign in Spain with the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race (172.2km) on Aug 3. All three events are UCI 1.1 races which are part of the UCI European Tour.
