Cheaper chocolates, cosmetics, soft drinks from UK no threat to India's local industry

Time of India08-05-2025

India's free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK will allow imports of cosmetics, soft drinks and chocolates at concessional duties but officials ruled out any surge in their shipments that could impact domestic industry. However, Scotch whisky imports are expected to grow as India has halved the tariffs to 75 per cent immediately and 40 per cent after ten years of the agreement.
'There is not much concern on chocolates, cosmetics and even Scotch imports. We don't expect a huge rise in their imports that could hurt our domestic industry,' said an official.
India's imports from the UK were USD 7.28 billion in April-January FY25 with those of precious and semiprecious stones at USD 2.2 billion, nuclear reactors and boilers at USD 1.2 billion, medical and surgical instruments at USD 311 million, and beverages and spirits at USD 307.95 million.
'Through this deal, tariffs on soaps, shaving cream, face cream and nail polish will either be removed on day one or removed after staging over 10 years. In addition, perfumes and eau de cologne will see tariffs of 20 per cent halved after staging, increasing the opportunity for exporters and reducing costs,' the UK said in a statement.
As soon as the FTA comes into force, 64 per cent of tariff lines or product categories such as advanced manufacturing such as aircraft parts, and fresh and frozen salmon from the UK will be eligible for tariff-free imports into India, the UK said. After 10 years, chocolate, sweet biscuits, soft drinks and non-alcoholic beer would get tariff-free access into India.
'The FTA will encourage imports but Indian industry would continue to remain competitive in sectors such as chocolates and cosmetics,' said Bipin Sapra, tax partner, EY India.
Scotch whisky exports to India by £1 billion over the next five years from over £200 million in 2022. Scotch accounts for around 2.5 per cent of India's whisky market.
'We are giving signals to the EU that we are open to offer concessions,' the official said.
The next round of India-EU talks is scheduled next week.

Mukesh Ambani says biggest risk of his life was…, failure predicted! still Reliance Industries invested billions of dollars to…

Billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani called his 2016 reentry into the telecom sector with Reliance Jio the 'biggest risk' of his life, emphasizing that even if analysts' predictions of financial failure had proven correct, it would still have been worth for them as its contribution to India's digital transformation was far bigger. In an interview with McKinsey & Co, Asia's richest man shared that Reliance Industries invested billions of its own dollars to deploy 4G mobile networks, despite skepticism from analysts who doubted India was ready for such advanced digital technology. 'But I told my board, 'In the worst case, we will not earn much return. That's okay because it's our own money. But then, as Reliance, this will be the best philanthropy that we will have ever done in India because we will have digitised India, and thereby completely transformed India',' he said. Mukesh Ambani On Reliance Jio Since its launch in 2016, Jio has revolutionised the Indian telecom market by providing free voice calls and extremely low-cost data, compelling competitors to cut prices and driving rapid digital adoption across the country. Before Jio's arrival, mobile internet in India was relatively expensive and inaccessible to large sections of the population. Its entry led to a price war that significantly reduced the cost of data, making internet access affordable to millions of Indians, including those in rural and underserved areas. The result was increased internet penetration — India now has over 800 million internet users, making it one of the largest online markets globally. It hastened digital inclusion as affordable data has helped bridge the digital divide, bringing first-time internet users — many from low-income households — online and fuelling growth of digital services like e-commerce, fintech, edtech, and entertainment. 'We've always taken big risks because, for us, scale is important. The biggest risk we have taken so far was Jio. At the time, it was our own money that we were investing, and I was the majority shareholder. Our worst-case scenario was that it might not work out financially because some analysts thought India wasn't ready for the most advanced digital technology,' Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Ltd, said. Jio today is the country's largest telecom operator, with over 470 million subscribers and a growing footprint in 5G, cloud, and AI services. 'We are believers that, at the end of the day, you come without anything into this world, and you leave without taking anything with you. What you leave behind is an institution,' he said. Mukesh Ambani On Dhirubhai Ambani's Lessons He went on to recall words of his father and legendary industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani. 'My father said to me, 'Reliance is a process. It's an institution that should last. You have to make sure that Reliance lasts beyond you and me.' That's my commitment to him — that Reliance will last beyond us. In 2027, Reliance will celebrate its golden jubilee. But I want Reliance to continue to serve India and humanity even after completing 100 years. And I am confident it will.' Ambani said the mindset has to be to believe in the businesses of the future. 'If you think about the Reliance of the 1960s and '70s, or of the 2000s and 2020s, it's a completely different organisation now. That's because the world changes every five or 10 years. It goes against everything that we learned in business school, such as not integrating across the value chain. 'We have challenged all of those things. What has also happened is that, as we chase the opportunities of technology into the future, some of these opportunities become bigger than our existing opportunities. And we cannot leave them alone,' he added. 'You start off by thinking in terms of what the worst is that could happen, and then you have to survive that. This has been one of my principles.' 'About 30 or 40 years ago, I said that another principle I should personally have is to look any of my employees in the eye. At Reliance, we tell our leaders that it's important to have eye contact because then you express your sincerity. I think we can put all our principles to our top 100 leaders by saying, 'These are our principles. We'll do what is right. Whatever we do, we should be able to look at each other and say we are not embarrassed',' he said. And this is how Reliance built its institutional culture. 'And this institutional culture is our best insurance against any kind of risk.' (With Inputs PTI)

Cashify reimagines wedding traditions with ‘Phone Wala Shagun' campaign

Cashify , India's e-commerce platform to buy and sell used smartphones , has launched its latest campaign, ' Phone Wala Shagun ', which focuses on unlocking the business potential of India's idle smartphone inventory. The campaign takes a humorous yet strategic turn on the traditional wedding cash, replacing it with something far more valuable in today's digital-first world: old smartphones. Live across Instagram, YouTube Shorts, and Meta, the campaign is designed to drive new user growth, trigger first-time resale behaviour, and embed the idea of resale into India's cultural fabric — all ahead of the high-upgrade festive season. India has over 300 million users eligible for smartphone upgrades yearly, yet millions of old devices lie unused — kept as 'backups' or forgotten. Phone Wala Shagun addresses this behavioural inertia and nudges consumers toward a more innovative, value-driven alternative. At the heart of the campaign is a short film set in a vibrant Indian wedding, where the dulha arrives wearing a garland of old phones instead of cash, and guests gift used phones in place of the traditional lifafa. What follows is chaos, laughter, and one simple realisation that old phones aren't junk, they're uncashed currency. Nakul Kumar, co-founder and chief managing officer of Cashify, said, 'With this campaign, we're not just flipping a cultural tradition, we're reframing how people see value. Our long-term vision is to embed resale into everyday decision-making. Resale shouldn't be reactive, it should be reflexive. A default part of the digital ownership journey. This campaign is the first step in making that shift mainstream.' To bring the concept alive with authenticity, cultural nuance, and humour, Cashify onboarded Dhindora Media , a content and creator-led storytelling studio known for building relatable narratives for Gen Z and millennial audiences . Jai Sahni of Dhindora Media shared, 'Cracking this idea was no easy feat. Phone resale is a tricky category. It doesn't naturally lend itself to everyday, relatable moments. We kept digging until a simple, quirky thought clicked: weddings are full of cash exchanges... what if, instead of cash, people started gifting their old phones? That became the spark for this film. It was a joy collaborating with the team at Cashify to bring this idea to life, right from scripting to execution. Always exciting when a brand is willing to have fun while solving a real problem.' The 'Phone Wala Shagun' campaign signals Cashify's evolution from a resale platform to a circular living brand that combines speed and trust with relevance and storytelling, the company stated in a press release. Phone Wala Shagun marks the beginning of a long-term cultural storytelling platform that Cashify will roll out through 2025, it added. Watch the video here:
