700 kg of explosives looted by Maoists recovered from Saranda forest
Bhubaneswar: The security forces have recovered 700 kilograms of explosive materials from the Saranda forest located near the Odisha-Jharkhand border, a week after 4 tonnes of industrial explosives were looted by Maoists.
A senior police official of Rourkela said the recovery was made during an intensive combing operation on Wednesday, days after a large cache of explosives was looted by Maoists in Sundargarh district.
The joint operation carried out by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Special Operations Group (SOG), and the CoBRA unit recovered the explosives in dense forest.
Earlier, the security forces had recovered 2.5 tonnes of explosives in the Saranda forest on Monday. With this recovery, the total quantity of explosives confiscated has climbed to nearly 3.2 tonnes out of the 4 tonnes looted by Maoists on May 28.
On May 27, eight armed Maoists had hijacked around 4 tonnes of gelatin from a truck from near a forested stone quarry at Banko of Sundargarh district in Odisha and drove the vehicle to a nearby forest where they unloaded the explosives and allowed the truck driver to go. The truck driver told the police that another 10-15 persons waiting inside the forest then looted at least 150 packets of explosives each weighing 15 to 25 kg.
Police have arrested the owner of the explosive warehouse from where the explosives were on their way to the stone quarry and the driver who drove the truck. Police said the owner has two explosive licences including one in the name of his wife and owns a warehouse at the remote Itma in Bargaon block of Sundargarh district.
On May 27, three trucks carrying explosives came out of the warehouse. One of the trucks was looted by Maoists while the owner kept the other two trucks hidden and lied to police that the explosives were delivered to clients.
Police said over 25,000 pieces of gelatin sticks, 400 detonators and 22,500 metres of detonating fuse wires were seized from the vehicles. Rourkela SP Nitesh Wadhwani said the accused failed to produce any valid document for the explosives. Agarwal kept the trucks hidden with the intention to sell the explosives later at a higher cost.

7 Maoists surrender in Dantewada
Dantewada: Seven Maoists, two of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Friday, a police official said. The cadres turned themselves in before police and CRPF officials citing disappointment at the growing differences within the outlawed CPI (Maoist), the harsh forest life and the movement's hollow ideology, he said. Body of second Maoist leader recovered from Bijapur site
Top Maoist leader Bhaskar was killed in an encounter with security forces in Indravati National Park area in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday and his body was recovered from the site of the operation on Friday, officials said. A statement from Bastar range inspector general of police Sunderraj P confirmed that the deceased was identified as Mailarapu Adelu who was popularly known by his alias Bhaskar, a top functionary of the CPI (Maoist)'s Telangana State Committee (TSC). Bhaskar also served as the secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division and held the rank of special committee member (SCM). The encounter was part of the same anti-Maoist operation underway since Wednesday by personnel from the state police's Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) as well as the CRPF's specialised unit CoBRA, Inspector General of Police, Sundarraj said. 'After the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a Naxalite along with one AK-47 rifle and other explosives, weapons, and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. Preliminary identification suggests the body is of Bhaskar alias Mailarapu Adellu, a special zonal committee (SZC) member of the Telangana State Committee (TSC) of the outlawed Maoists,' he said. 'Bhaskar, a resident of Adilabad district in Telangana, was the secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the TSC of Maoists. He carried a reward of ₹25 lakhs in Chhattisgarh and 20 lakhs in Telangana,' the IG added. This is the third big success in the past fortnight for security forces pushing relentlessly against the Naxals with the aim of ending the menace by March 2026. On Thursday, senior Maoist leader Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar, who had a bounty of ₹40 lakh on his head, was killed in an encounter with security forces in the same area, police said. On May 21, Communist Party of India (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70) was neutralised by security forces in Narayanpur in Bastar region. 'With the killing of both Bhaskar and Sudhakar in back-to-back operations, we believe it is a significant setback for the Maoist presence in the region. The search for other cadres is still underway,' the IG added. According to Chhattisgarh police records, Bhaskar, 53, hailed from Pochera village under Boath mandal in Telangana's Adilabad district and belonged to the Scheduled Caste (Madiga) community. He discontinued his intermediate studies and was earlier engaged in agriculture. Bhaskar was married to Kanthi Lingavva alias Anitha, who was a Divisional Committee Member (DCM) in the same division and was killed in an encounter on December 22, 2022. Records claimed that Bhaskar was fluent in Telugu, Hindi, Gondi, and GothiKoya and was known to carry an AK-47. Since January last year, more than 403 Maoist cadres have been neutralized so far in the Bastar division in separate encounters, according to government figures. Sundarraj reiterated the appeal to Maoist cadres to surrender. 'We are committed to restoring peace and development in the region,' he said. MEERUT: A day after the headless body of a 17-year-old girl was found in a canal in Partapur region of Meerut, her mother and four other family members, including a juvenile, were arrested on Friday for allegedly killing her and severing the head using a bolt cutter, said police. Those arrested include Rakesh Devi, 40, Monu, 26, Kamal Singh, 56, Samar Singh, 54, and a 14-year-old minor. Another accused, identified as Gaurav, of Hapur, is absconding.
