Melaka unemployment rate down to 1.8% in Q4 2024
He said the achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of the state government's policies in creating job opportunities, especially for the youth in Melaka.
'Today, Melaka is home to more than 200,000 youths. They are not just a number, they represent the future energy of the state and the country, and are among the most valuable assets that will shape Melaka's future,' he said.
'Therefore, various initiatives have been and continue to be implemented, focusing on job marketability, entrepreneurship, education, personal development, as well as social and religious values.
He said this after officiating the state-level Youth Day 2025 celebration last night, which was also attended by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim and the state Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Committee chairman Datuk V.P. Shanmugam.
Ab Rauf said the state government is focused on empowering skilled youths by strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to meet industry needs and position Melaka as the national TVET centre, ensuring its youth remain competitive and preferred by employers.
He said his administration is committed to involving youth not just in programmes but from planning to policy implementation.
Confident in the strong government-youth relationship, he believes it will nurture visionary and competitive young leaders, and the state government will continue providing infrastructure, opportunities, and guidance to ensure sustainable youth development.
He said the state government established a Youth State Assembly with 33 representatives from each state constituency to provide leadership training and involve youth in grassroots policy-making.
Additionally, the state government introduced the Rumah Belia Melaka (RBM) scheme, Malaysia's first youth housing programme, offering 1,754 units to help young people own their first home.

Its chief minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said any incident carried potentially huge risks that could threaten safety, interrupt business operations and affect power supply to the public. "Melaka is a state that is part of the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) grid and has the Sungai Udang Regasification Terminal that channels consistent and safe gas supply, not only for the state, but also the northern region and west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. "We cannot turn a blind eye to risks and threats that exist if safety aspects are neglected and we don't want an incident like the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Selangor to happen,' he said when officiating the close of the state level Safety Forum: Public Awareness on Utility Facilities here today, which was attended by utility agencies such as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Petronas Gas Berhad and Gas Malaysia Distribution Sdn Bhd. The Putra Heights explosion served as an eye-opening lesson that utility facilities were not merely infrastructure, but critical assets that could bring huge risks if not controlled well. As such, the state government has asked the Melaka-level National Security Council to hold engagement sessions with all utility companies and ensure safety advocacy reaches the grassroots level, Ab Rauf said. In a related development, he said that based on TNB records, there were 193 cases of electric meter tampering in Melaka this year compared to 521 cases last year, and seven cases of infrastructure trespass and theft this year compared to three last year. -- BERNAMA

Bersatu's Hilman Idham to face charge over video remarks on political arrests
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief Muhammad Hilman Idham is set to face prosecution tomorrow over remarks made at a protest last month. According to the Royal Malaysia Police's Classified Crimes Unit, the Gombak Setia assemblyman will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements deemed likely to cause public alarm. The charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest here, in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. The offence is punishable by up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Bersatu responded to the news by condemning the plan to prosecute Hilman and alleging it to be political intimidation.

TVET graduates key to high-value industries, says MOHE
IPOH: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates are being prepared to lead high-value industries, according to Datuk Dr Megat Sany Megat Ahmad Supian, deputy secretary-general (Policy) of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). He stated that these graduates contribute significantly to socio-economic balance and a competitive workforce, beyond just filling job positions. 'Five strategic thrusts under the National TVET Policy 2030 provide a strong foundation for comprehensive implementation,' he said during the 53rd Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) Convocation Ceremony at Dewan Jubilee Perak. The event was attended by PUO director Dr Salmi Che Meh. Megat Sany emphasised the ministry's focus on structured governance and international-standard education to boost global competitiveness. Industry collaborations have been strengthened to improve TVET programme quality, he added. Sustainable funding is also prioritised for facility upgrades, faculty development, and industry-aligned research. 'MOHE aims to reposition TVET as a top career choice, shifting public perception from a last resort to a strategic skills-based pathway,' he said. Initiatives to enhance polytechnic and community college facilities are underway under the JPPKK. The government has allocated RM431.9 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan for 111 upgrading projects. These include lab constructions, workshop upgrades, lecture hall improvements, and digital facility enhancements. A total of 1,820 PUO graduates received diplomas and certificates at the convocation, running until Thursday. - Bernama
