Melaka unemployment rate down to 1.8% in Q4 2024
MELAKA: The unemployment rate in Melaka for the fourth quarter (Q4) of last year dropped to 1.8 per cent, down from 2.6 per cent in 2023, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said.
He said the achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of the state government's policies in creating job opportunities, especially for the youth in Melaka.
'Today, Melaka is home to more than 200,000 youths. They are not just a number, they represent the future energy of the state and the country, and are among the most valuable assets that will shape Melaka's future,' he said.
'Therefore, various initiatives have been and continue to be implemented, focusing on job marketability, entrepreneurship, education, personal development, as well as social and religious values.
He said this after officiating the state-level Youth Day 2025 celebration last night, which was also attended by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim and the state Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Committee chairman Datuk V.P. Shanmugam.
Ab Rauf said the state government is focused on empowering skilled youths by strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to meet industry needs and position Melaka as the national TVET centre, ensuring its youth remain competitive and preferred by employers.
He said his administration is committed to involving youth not just in programmes but from planning to policy implementation.
Confident in the strong government-youth relationship, he believes it will nurture visionary and competitive young leaders, and the state government will continue providing infrastructure, opportunities, and guidance to ensure sustainable youth development.
He said the state government established a Youth State Assembly with 33 representatives from each state constituency to provide leadership training and involve youth in grassroots policy-making.
Additionally, the state government introduced the Rumah Belia Melaka (RBM) scheme, Malaysia's first youth housing programme, offering 1,754 units to help young people own their first home.

Melaka allocates RM700,000 for 'Bijak SPM' initiative
MELAKA: The Melaka government has allocated RM700,000 under the 2025 State Budget to implement an excellence programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates through the SPM Smart Initiative, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the implementation of the initiative involved 95 secondary schools and would benefit 12,757 SPM candidates in the state. 'The main goal of this initiative is to support schools in implementing various excellence programmes, including answering technique workshops, final preparation workshops, and the provision of SPM learning materials, to help students face the exam with greater confidence and readiness. 'We will also hold high-tech workshops to ensure students are well-prepared to face the challenges of an increasingly technology-driven world,' he told reporters here today. He said this after opening the 2024 SPM Excellent Student Appreciation Ceremony and the 2025 Melaka Bijak SPM programme, which was also attended by Deputy State Investment, Industry and TVET Development Committee chairman Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zaha According to Ab Rauf, the state government is allocating RM381,100, through the Melaka Education Trust Fund (Tapem), this year for the Bijak Sejarah dan Cemerlang SPM initiatives. He said that under the initiative, students who obtained straight A+'s would receive an incentive of RM1,000 and students who obtained straight A's would receive RM500, while students who obtained an A+ in History would receive RM200. 'This year, the state government also allocated RM200,000 for the implementation of the Free Tuition Programme for SPM and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students, especially those from the B40 group,' he said. In another development, he said that as part of efforts to expand access to education, the state government is taking steps to establish itself as the National TVET Centre, providing more opportunities for Melaka's youth to master high-tech skills aligned with current industry demands. 'Melaka currently has 61 TVET institutions offering various skills-based courses, and the confidence of foreign nations in the potential of local youth was recently demonstrated when the Chinese government offered 15 TVET scholarships to Malaysia, with five awarded to students from Melaka. 'This indirectly proves that Melaka is now ahead of other states in TVET development, convincing foreign countries to prioritise opportunities for our people,' he said.

Green light for RM450mil Melaka flood mitigation project
THE Federal Government has approved RM450mil in funds for the Sungai Baru Flood Mitigation Plan in Masjid Tanah, Melaka, to address recurring floods in the area. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the project would span a 15km-stretch from Sungai Durian Daun to the mouth of Sungai Kuala Baru. He said it would also include the construction of four flood retention ponds in Kampung Londang, Kampung Jeram, Kampung Lubuk Redan and Taman Gamelan. 'This is a long-term initiative to tackle the flood problems affecting Masjid Tanah,' he told Bernama after visiting a Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) pump house as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat engagement programme for the Lendu constituency at Taman Masjid Tanah Ria. Also present at the event were State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, state science, technology, innovation and digital communications committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali. For short-term flood prevention, Ab Rauf said DID was implementing RM3.3mil worth of state-funded projects, including the installation of pumps, construction of pump houses and compact substations as well as carrying out river maintenance works. Two existing flood retention ponds at Durian Daun and Solok Duku were also undergoing rehabilitation at a combined cost of RM1.85mil, which is expected to be completed by December. Separately, Ab Rauf urged the state's stage bus operator to take greater responsibility for safety standards, calling for improved driver training following a series of fatal public transport accidents. He noted that several incidents were linked to negligent driving, resulting in loss of life.

Perak govt unveils two strategic plans to enhance its digital economy
IPOH: The Perak government marked a new milestone with the unveiling of two strategic plans aimed at transforming the state into an inclusive, sustainable and competitive smart state driven by a digital economy. The plans - Perak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 and the Perak State Smart City Blueprint 2040 - were launched by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad on Wednesday (June 4). Both plans are designed to strengthen digital infrastructure, empower human capital and stimulate innovation and technology investment towards comprehensive and high-impact socio-economic development. Saarani, in his speech, said the digital economy and smart city development plans are complementary, with the former providing technology, policy direction, and talent, while the latter supports growth through infrastructure, data access, and demand for digital solutions. He said the simultaneous launch of both plans marks a key step towards building a more efficient, resilient, and high-quality urban environment, with a positive impact on Perak's socio-economic development. 'We are now in an era of rapid digital transformation, and if we act too slowly, we will be left behind. 'That is why the digital economy agenda has been identified as one of the nine main agendas under the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Plan. 'Our goal is clear: to build an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable economy,' he said in his speech before launching the plans at a hotel here on Wednesday. Saarani added that the contribution of the digital sector is highly significant to the state's economic growth. He said this sector contributed approximately 15%, or RM12bil of the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of RM80.2bil in 2022. 'By 2030, the sector's contribution is expected to increase significantly, with projected growth of between RM2bil and RM4.2bil to the state's GDP, in line with the economic transition towards digitalisation. 'This projected growth is aligned with the national target of achieving a 25% contribution from the digital economy to the country's overall GDP by 2030,' he said. Saarani said in fact, it is also expected to create between 3,000 and 6,000 new job opportunities and assist in the digitalisation of 18,000 micro, small and medium enterprises. He said the plans focus on four main pillars: access to quality digital infrastructure, efficient digital public administration, a digitally driven business ecosystem, and a digitally empowered society. 'A total of 21 programmes have been identified, with five catalyst projects given priority. 'To ensure the success of both plans is felt broadly, the development of the people, especially youth, must not be overlooked. 'The state government is committed to inclusive and competitive youth development across various economic sectors. 'We aim for 55% of SPM leavers to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) by 2025,' he said. Saarani said he believed the vision of making Perak a resilient, inclusive, and advanced digital state would become a reality. 'Let us continue strengthening this synergy for the benefit of both current and future generations,' he added.
