Crystal Palace chairman already gave major Marc Guehi transfer boost to Liverpool - 'Really open'

Liverpool's hopes of signing Marc Guehi have been given a potential boost after Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish made telling comments about the defender's future. Since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in 2021 for $24 million), Guehi has developed into one of the Premier League's most consistent defenders. Over four seasons at Selhurst Park, Guehi has made 155 appearances and scored eight goals, becoming a key figure for both club and country. Advertisement His impressive form has earned him 23 England caps, including a start in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. Guehi also etched his name into Palace folklore last season by captaining the club to their first-ever FA Cup triumph, a 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley. With just one year remaining on his contract, Palace face the prospect of losing him for nothing next summer and may be forced to consider offers in the current transfer window—a situation that has alerted several top clubs, including Liverpool. Palace stood firm last summer in their efforts to keep hold of Guehi, rejecting multiple bids from Newcastle United —reportedly as high as £65 million ($87 million). Advertisement The Reds' reported deal to send Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for a fee rising to £35 million is seen by many as sound business. Replacing him with Guehi would represent a clear upgrade. However, Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is likely to face a tough negotiation. Palace chairman Steve Parish is no stranger to the transfer market and will fight to ensure Guehi doesn't leave for anything below his full value. The Eagles, now preparing for their first-ever campaign in European competition, are aiming high—with the possibility of Champions League qualification through a tournament win not completely out of reach. That said, Parish is also realistic. He understands the need to balance ambition with opportunity for his players. Last summer, he sanctioned Michael Olise's move to Bayern Munich for around £51 million ($69 million). In previous years, Wilfried Zaha, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Yannick Bolasie were also allowed to leave when the time was right. Liverpool are in the race to sign Marc Guehi this summer -Credit:Getty Images Speaking on the It's Called Soccer podcast last month ahead of the FA Cup final, Parish admitted the club 'have to be really open' to allowing players to move up the footballing ladder. He said: "The first thing is we need to stay in the division so that's the first north star and that's obviously not easy as we can see from even Man United and Tottenham this year. Advertisement "They're not really close to relegation, but that's arguably because we have all taken a lot of points this year off the bottom three clubs. Anything that increases the risk of that dramatically, it's very difficult to find a way to do it. After that, then, of course, we will be a trading club. We want to survive and thrive in this division for two reasons: firstly because financially you have to cover the cost of running the club and, secondly, because the kind of players we want to attract, we need to show them a pathway. 'We're a destination for those great pros that have still got a massive competitive instinct, still want to do well, still want to give everything when they cross the white line but they realise they're probably not quite going to get to the level above us. Then there are players that are on a journey and on their way to the Bayern Munich's and other clubs. We realised over a period of time that we have to be really open to it. 'The thing you have to do with clubs like ours is manage that process as well as you can, so not to lose too many. I remember Sir Alex [Ferguson] used to try and bring in two players every summer. He thought any more than that was very difficult to integrate in the squad. That would be the kind of number of your real premium talent that you would be really able to deal with in any one summer so trying to time things so you can manage that is what we're trying to do.'

Revealed: Marc Guehi's Stance on Potential £40m Liverpool Move

Liverpool Eye Defensive Reinforcements as Quansah Nears Leverkusen Move Liverpool are closing in on the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal expected to exceed £34 million. While the move hasn't been fully finalised, according to Sky Sports, 'final discussions are ongoing between the clubs and the player is ready to push ahead with the move once a full agreement is reached.' Advertisement Quansah's likely departure marks a swift rise for the young centre-back, who made just one Premier League start at centre-half before Liverpool's title-winning campaign under Arne Slot. His value has soared, aided by Liverpool's ability to showcase academy products, even if only briefly. Photo: IMAGO Guehi Deal Complicated by Assurances and Competition Marc Guehi has re-entered the conversation as a long-term Liverpool target, but a transfer this summer appears to be out of reach. Sky Sports report that 'any prospect of signing him this summer is currently at a distance,' due to both financial considerations and competition from other Premier League sides. Advertisement Arsenal and unnamed clubs remain active in their pursuit of the Crystal Palace captain. Guehi, for his part, 'would want to be assured to be a regular first-team starter,' should he make a move. That request poses a challenge for Liverpool, who already have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez battling for starting roles. Securing Guehi would likely cost around £40million. Palace are under pressure to sell, with Guehi in his final year of his contract, and Liverpool are reportedly not willing to overpay for a player who may not be a guaranteed starter under Slot's evolving system. Konaté's Future Adds Another Layer While Guehi might not be seen as a direct replacement for Quansah, his potential arrival could hinge more significantly on Ibrahima Konaté's situation. The Frenchman has one year remaining on his current deal, and negotiations over a new contract have yet to bear fruit. Advertisement If an exit for Konaté becomes likely, Liverpool's pursuit of a higher-tier centre-back like Guehi may intensify. As Sky Sports note, Guehi's fit would 'lend weight to the idea that he would not be someone Liverpool move for to replace Quansah,' but rather as part of a longer-term reshuffle depending on Konaté's decision. Photo: IMAGO Alternative Options Still Being Explored Liverpool's strategy in the market appears patient rather than panicked. The club continue to explore options that match their profile — young, high-upside defenders with resale value. Interest in Leny Yoro last summer and Dean Huijsen this year, who ultimately joined Real Madrid, shows the type of player the club is seeking. Advertisement Sky Sports make it clear that 'Liverpool are relaxed about their defensive options even if Quansah leaves,' suggesting confidence in the depth and balance within the current squad. Still, if the right opportunity arises, particularly one that suits Slot's tactical preferences, the Reds will act decisively. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis The Quansah news is bittersweet. He's a local lad, showed promise in flashes, and you never like seeing one of your own move on. But £34 million for a player who barely featured during the title run? That's excellent business. You have to respect the way Liverpool develop and sell talent with such precision. Guehi would be a classy signing, no doubt. England international, Premier League tested, and still with room to grow. But would he really get minutes over Van Dijk or Konaté? Unless there's movement on Konaté, it makes sense not to throw £50 million-plus at Palace for a fourth-choice defender. Advertisement There's also the Slot factor. He's not Klopp, and he won't rotate for the sake of it. He'll want players who are technically sharp, versatile, and comfortable in transition. Guehi fits that on paper, but the price and guarantees might be dealbreakers. Trust the process, but let's hope there's clarity on Konaté before pre-season kicks off.

West Brom tie down exciting prospect to new deal

Highly-rated Alfie Maughan has marked his 17th birthday by penning professional terms with Albion. Maughan's development has been rewarded with a two-year deal after a successful maiden term in the scholarship group, which saw the right-back provide 14 assists and help the Under-18s reach the last eight of the FA Youth Cup. Advertisement The defender, from Tamworth, first joined the club's youth system aged six, progressing through the development sides. READ MORE: Championship clubs told to pay £1m for ex-Birmingham City wonderboy READ MORE: Birmingham City have created a new role for Lukas Jutkiewicz after retirement Capable with both left and right foot, he can cover either of the wide defensive positions and is a key attacking outlet down the flanks. A regular set-piece taker, Maughan also featured for the U21s last season, playing a handful of matches across both Premier League 2 and National League Cup competitions. Academy manager Richard Stevens said: 'Alfie's another boy who's been in the system since pre-academy, is Albion through and through, and loves everything about the football club. Advertisement 'He comes in every day like it's the most important thing to him and, as a footballer, he really has developed. 'When I first came in, Alfie was in the Under-12s and even then he was a standout, but ever since he has really maintained that growth and quality throughout his schoolboy years. 'During his first year as a scholar, Alfie has continued that development. He's been excellent, impacting games with his deliveries with both feet from crosses, set-plays, moments in the final third, and that aspect is a strength of his. 'At the other end of the pitch, he's improving all of the time with his defending and is another who can take his football career as far as he can. 'This club can help him do that and it was really important we offered Alfie this contract.''
