Tigers Make Historic Announcement After Angels Game

Yahoo05-05-2025

The Detroit Tigers concluded their four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels with a commanding 13-1 victory on Sunday, securing a 3-1 series win at Angel Stadium. This decisive win followed a 5-2 loss on Saturday, where the Tigers' offense struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
In Sunday's game, Detroit's bats came alive, with Trey Sweeney leading the charge by collecting four hits and driving in six runs. Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith each added home runs, contributing to the team's season-high run total. On the mound, Reese Olson delivered 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight, effectively stifling the Angels' lineup.

Detroit's strong offensive performance has been instrumental in its recent success, propelling them to a 22-13 record and maintaining its position atop the American League Central division.

Following the win, the Tigers took to social media to announce a historic achievement—the team has now hit 20 home runs over their last seven games—their most in any seven-game stretch since September 2004.
The Tigers' recent surge has been fueled by a potent offense and solid pitching, positioning them as strong contenders in the early stages of the season. Conversely, the Angels continue to struggle, falling to 13-20 and remaining at the bottom of the AL West standings. Despite a brief respite with a 5-2 win on Saturday, the Angels have lost eight of their last ten games. Injuries have further compounded their challenges, with Mike Trout currently on the injured list.
Detroit will resume action against the Colorado Rockies, aiming to extend its winning streak. The Angels, meanwhile, will host the Seattle Mariners, seeking to reverse their fortunes and climb out of the division cellar.

Tigers Make Big Announcement to Celebrate Historic Start to Season

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers are off to their best start after 70 games — slightly more than 40 percent of the season — since 2006. That was the year the Tigers returned to the World Series after a 21-year absence. Despite losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in the Fall Classic, the Tigers won 95 games that season. After 70 they stood at 46-24. This year, the Tigers are just one game behind that 2006 pace, one of two teams with a 45-25 record, the best in MLB. That's also 11 games ahead of where the Tigers were last year, at 34-36. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: Gleyber Torres #25, Wenceel Pérez #46, Riley Greene #31 and Parker Meadows #22 of the Detroit Tigers celebrate their win against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park on June 08,... DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 08: Gleyber Torres #25, Wenceel Pérez #46, Riley Greene #31 and Parker Meadows #22 of the Detroit Tigers celebrate their win against the Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park on June 08, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. MoreThe only other 45-25 team after 70 games is the New York Mets. But there is one big difference between the two teams. The Mets are paying heavily for their 45 wins, with a payroll of $324.2 million — second highest in MLB, roughly $12.6 million behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Tigers payroll? At $144.1 million, Detroit ranks 18th of all big league clubs and pays out just 44 percent of what the Mets are spending. What accounts for the Tigers' surprising success? Any number of factors, of course, but the most important has to be pitching. At 3.22 Detroit boasts the fourth-best ERA in MLB and second-lowest in the American League. Led by 28-year-old lefty Tarik Skubal, last season's AL Cy Young Award winner with a 1.99 ERA in a league-leading 90 1/3 innings pitched, Tigers starters have the second-best ERA in the majors, at 3.03, behind only the Mets (2.79). And while their overall bullpen ERA is an 11th-ranked 3.54, the Tigers have three relievers who have thrown at least 30 innings with an ERA under 2.00. They are Will Vest (1.83), Tommy Kahnle (1.50), and Brant Hurter (1.75). More MLB: Tigers Urged To Reunite With Familiar Face By Former MLB Executive The Tigers' success extends beyond the baseball field, according to an announcement by the team on Friday. The red-hot club is drawing big TV numbers. "Tigers games on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit rank as some of the most-watched programming across baseball this year," the team said in the announcement. "Through June 9, average household impressions on our linear television broadcasts have jumped 82 percent compared to the same point last season, the largest such increase for any MLB team (excluding Toronto)." The Tigers' local TV ratings, an average of 4.46 per game, rank second among all MLB teams. Streaming numbers are also up — way up — according to the Tigers' announcement, with a jump of 93 percent compared to last season. The Tigers open a three-game inter-league series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday at Comerica Park. Hurter will get the start, only his third of the season, in what is slated as a bullpen game for Detroit. More MLB: Brewers Sensational Pitching Prospect Has Bizarre, Mind-Blowing MLB Debut

'No wrongdoing': Cincinnati Reds pitcher Wade Miley responds to Tyler Skaggs drug report

DETROIT – Cincinnati Reds pitcher Wade Miley said he engaged in 'no wrongdoing' in response Friday to a published report revealing court documents alleging he gave the late Tyler Skaggs prescription medicine more than a decade ago when they were teammates in Arizona. Skaggs, the former Angels pitcher, died at 27 of a drug overdose during a team road trip in 2019. A former team official is currently serving a prison sentence for his involvement in providing drugs to Skaggs. Advertisement Thursday's report in The Athletic included contents of a deposition from Skaggs' former agent in which the agent testified Skaggs had told him he sometimes received prescription drugs from Miley. Wade Miley said he did not engage in "any wrongdoing" in regards to former teammate Tyler Skaggs. The deposition is part of a wrongful death civil suit against the Angels filed by the Skaggs family. It sucks. My thoughts are with his family and his friends,' Miley said during a media session Friday at his locker in Detroit that lasted less than a minute and a half. 'But I'm not going to sit here and talk about things that somebody might have said about me or what-not. Advertisement 'I was never a witness for any of this. I was never accused of any wrongdoing. And I'm not going to sit here and and talk about something …. I'll take baseball questions. That's about it.' He declined to directly answer a question about whether the testimony was true. He said he didn't expect the report to be a distraction as he heads into his second start for the Reds on Sunday. And when asked whether anybody from MLB has contacted him about the issue he said, 'I'd rather just focus on the Cincinnati Reds right now and baseball. And what I have to do moving forward. I have to get ready for a game on Sunday.' Advertisement And when asked a followup regarding any potential MLB process: 'I said what I said about the thing,' he said. 'There's no wrongdoing. It is what it is.' Reds officials say there's no action warranted or planned by the team. Miley and Skaggs were Diamondbacks teammates in 2012 and 2013. Reds manager Terry Francona said he found out about the report 'when everybody else' did. 'From where I sit, other than me caring about Miley and certainly having respect for the sadness of the family, there's nothing for me to say,' Francona said. 'I don't know anything about it. I don't think commenting makes a whole lot of sense.' This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Cincinnati Reds' Wade Miley responds to reported Tyler Skaggs drug link
