Illegal immigrant from Gujarat jailed in US for $1.79 million elderly fraud scam
AHMEDABAD: A Gujarati illegal immigrant from New Jersey,
Pranav Patel
, 33, was sentenced to six years and three months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering. The sentence was pronounced by US District Judge William F.
Jung. Patel pleaded guilty to the charge on December 23, 2024.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of $1,791,301, which was identified as the proceeds of the offence.
According to court records, Patel was part of a fraud scheme targeting elderly citizens in the United States between October and December 2023. Conspirators, operating from call centres outside the country, posed as officials from govt agencies, including the US Department of the Treasury.
They falsely claimed that the victims had pending warrants or legal issues and pressured them to hand over cash and valuables.
Patel acted as a money mule for the operation. He travelled from New Jersey to various locations across the east coast, including Florida, to collect money and gold from the victims. One victim told the court during sentencing that the scam forced him to sell his home and rely solely on Social Security for daily expenses.
In December 2023, Patel travelled to a residence in Hillsborough County to collect what he believed was a box of gold. The operation was monitored by law enforcement. Patel was arrested shortly after picking up the box, which was part of a controlled law enforcement operation.
In total, Patel was involved in laundering over $1.79 million. The scheme caused significant financial harm to the victims. The investigation was carried out by the US Secret Service along with the Pasco and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Offices. The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorneys Jennifer L. Peresie and Maria Guzman.
Officials said the case highlights the efforts to stop financial fraud schemes that target vulnerable citizens across the country.

Woman found dead week ago allegedly gangraped by 5
Rajkot: A week after a woman's body was found on the terrace of a building in Surendranagar city, investigation has revealed that she was allegedly gangraped by five people. On Aug 7, the body of an unidentified woman, later found to be a resident of Dhrangadhra town, was found in suspicious circumstances on the terrace of a commercial complex near the Surendranagar bus depot. Initially, the Surendranagar City 'B' Division police registered a case of accidental death. On Aug 12, her 41-year-old husband lodged a complaint for gangrape under sections of the BNS. Deputy superintendent of police Nikunj Patel of the SC/ST Cell, said that the CCTV footage from the area showed a man carrying the unconscious woman on his shoulder to the terrace of the building. "Further probe revealed that on the night of Aug 7, the main accused and four others allegedly drugged the woman, rendered her unconscious, and took turns to rape her," said Patel. The arrested accused, a daily wage labourer, is reportedly homeless and often stayed near the bus station. Police sources said the woman had married her husband four years ago, and he works as a labourer in Dhrangadhra. On Aug 5, she had left the house for unknown reasons and reached Surendranagar, where she was allegedly assaulted. Police are awaiting the forensic postmortem and viscera samples reports to determine the exact cause of death. "If evidence links the accused to her death, murder charges will be added," said Patel. Families of 10 on-ground victims of AI-171 crash also engage US law firm
Ahmedabad: Families of 10 ground victims killed in the Air India Flight AI-171 crash on June 12 have engaged Beasley Allen, a prominent US aviation law firm that represented families in the Boeing 737 MAX disasters, to pursue legal action. (REUTERS) The firm, led by aviation attorney D Michael Andrews, is exploring product liability claims against Boeing in US federal courts and Montreal Convention claims against Air India in UK courts, though no lawsuits have been filed yet. 'We are presently representing families of 80 victims of the plane crash. They include families of 10 victims who died on the ground due to the crash,' said Andrews who was in Ahmedabad recently. Among them are families which lost medical students who were on the campus at the time of the crash, a man going on a scooter with his wife and two persons who were killed in the medical college hostel's food preparation area, he said, declining to identify his clients by name. A relative of Gujarati film producer Maheshbhai Kalavadia (Jirawala) said the family retained the firm on August 11 after meeting Andrews in Ahmedabad, who had travelled to India to meet families of victims in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Diu and Mumbai. 'These were innocent people who had nothing to do with the flight - they weren't even passengers,' said the relative who interacted with Andrews in Ahmedabad. 'They were just going about their normal day when this tragedy struck. The firm will seek full accountability by filing a case in the US to ensure those responsible are held accountable for these lives that were lost through no fault of their own.' Kalavadia, known for music videos and directing a Gujarati movie, was in the area after a meeting at Law Garden area before the crash. He called his wife around 1:15 pm, telling her he was headed home. But he never reached. His remains were found within 700 metres of the crash site, and was later identified through DNA matching. The causes for the crash of flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, from Ahmedabad on June 12, are not yet clear. The plane crashed shortly after take-off, killing 241 people aboard and 19 on the ground. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was the sole survivor. The victims on the flight include 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national among the passengers and crew members. Riyaz Chittiwala, 55, whose father, father Abdul Razaaq, 81, was on board Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick on June 12, said he engaged the firm because they had succeeded in getting justice for families of the victims who had died in the crash of a plane manufactured by Boeing. 'Also, there is no risk. The firm is not charging any legal fees from us and they promise to get us the answers. We want the black box data, so we can investigate with the help of experts as to what exactly happened,' said Chittiwala. Chittiwala said that he had received ₹25 lakh as interim compensation from Air India. The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has offered ex gratia compensation of ₹1 crore for families of deceased passengers and ₹25 lakh for ground victims. This payment is in addition to the ₹25 lakh interim compensation provided by Air India. The Tata Group has also established the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust with ₹500 crore, funded equally by Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, to support the long-term needs of the affected families. The Boeing 737 MAX cases that established Beasley Allen's reputation involved two crashes that killed 346 people between 2018 and 2019 - Lion Air Flight 610 in Indonesia and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 in Ethiopia. Boeing ultimately paid $2.5 billion under a 2021 deferred prosecution agreement, including a $243.6 million criminal penalty, $1.77 billion to airlines, and $500 million for crash victim families. Boeing has since settled more than 90% of the claims and paid billions more in individual compensation to families, with the company acknowledging liability for the crashes caused by the faulty Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), US Department of Justice records showed. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of India leads the inquiry with participation from the US National Transportation Safety Board, the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch and Boeing representatives. Andrews has previously disputed the findings in the interim report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB), which suggests potential pilot action. The law firm executive argued that a Flight Data Recorder only detects changes in electrical current, not manual switch movements. This, he said last month, raises the possibility that a computer-triggered fault, rather than human error, that caused both engine fuel control switches to send a CUTOFF signal.

Management, teachers of Ahmedabad school slapped with fine for staff's dharna over salary issue
Days after the staff of Diwan Ballubhai High School in Ahmedabad held a dharna on the campus of one of its schools, boycotting teaching work for a day over salary issues, the District Education Officer (DEO) on Thursday penalised the teachers as well as the management of the school. While the management was handed out a penalty of Rs 10,000, the teachers would stand to lose a day's salary. Citing the Right to Education Act (RTE) 2009 rules, Ahmedabad (city) DEO Rohit Chaudhary ordered the school management to deposit the fine within three days. In separate orders issued by the DEO office pertaining to the school's two branches in Kankaria and Paldi, and both its Gujarati and English- medium schools, the teachers have been slapped with a penalty of unpaid one-day leave for not teaching students and going on a strike. The respective school principals have to inform the DEO office for implementation of this order within three days. On August 11, nearly 100 teaching and non-teaching staff of Diwan Ballubhai High School in Maninagar and Paldi sat on a dharna on the Maninagar campus alleging discriminatory annual increment given to them last week. The DEO, Ahmedabad (city), issued show-cause notices to the teachers and management on the same day. Citing violation of the RTE Act, DEO Chaudhary demanded a reply to the show-cause notices issued to teachers and management by Tuesday. 'Teachers quit their teaching work on salary increment issue and sat on a dharna without prior approval or intimation to this office. For their (the teachers') own interests, students had to suffer. Same goes with the management as to why they failed to resolve the issue and not discuss it with the DEO office,' DEO Chaudhary had earlier told The Indian Express. Though the management, in its response to the show-cause notice, stated that the school has introduced a 'performance-based' increment process from this year, it was penalised for failing to resolve the issue. Earlier, a flat increment used to be given to the staff of the school. This was replaced by performance-based evaluation from this year.
