AHMEDABAD: A Gujarati illegal immigrant from New Jersey,
Pranav Patel
, 33, was sentenced to six years and three months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering. The sentence was pronounced by US District Judge William F.
Jung. Patel pleaded guilty to the charge on December 23, 2024.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of $1,791,301, which was identified as the proceeds of the offence.
According to court records, Patel was part of a fraud scheme targeting elderly citizens in the United States between October and December 2023. Conspirators, operating from call centres outside the country, posed as officials from govt agencies, including the US Department of the Treasury.
They falsely claimed that the victims had pending warrants or legal issues and pressured them to hand over cash and valuables.
Patel acted as a money mule for the operation. He travelled from New Jersey to various locations across the east coast, including Florida, to collect money and gold from the victims. One victim told the court during sentencing that the scam forced him to sell his home and rely solely on Social Security for daily expenses.
In December 2023, Patel travelled to a residence in Hillsborough County to collect what he believed was a box of gold. The operation was monitored by law enforcement. Patel was arrested shortly after picking up the box, which was part of a controlled law enforcement operation.
In total, Patel was involved in laundering over $1.79 million. The scheme caused significant financial harm to the victims. The investigation was carried out by the US Secret Service along with the Pasco and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Offices. The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorneys Jennifer L. Peresie and Maria Guzman.
Officials said the case highlights the efforts to stop financial fraud schemes that target vulnerable citizens across the country.

Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground. Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims. The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters. Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong. There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.

Three days after an Air India flight bound for London crashed in Ahmedabad, authorities have identified 47 victims through DNA testing. Of these, 24 bodies have been handed over to their families, according to an official statement issued on Sunday. 'We have established contact with the next of kin/relatives of all passengers and crew members, expressing our condolences and helping them with the next steps. Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 15 (ANI): Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said that former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among those who died in the tragic Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. His identity was confirmed through DNA matching. Rupani was one of the 241 passengers who lost their lives after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. 'Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost his life during the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has been matched. He worked for the people of Gujarat for several years. The mortal remains of Rupani will be handed over to his family, and the authorities will decide on the final rites,' Sanghavi said. Union Minister Nimuben Bambhaniya expressed her condolences, saying, 'The plane accident that happened in Ahmedabad is truly sad. Former CM Vijay Rupani died in that accident. He knew every BJP worker very well. We won't be able to fill his void of work. Every worker has tears in their eyes.' Earlier, Sanghavi also shared details about the overall identification efforts. 'Update as of 1.00 pm- From 9 PM last night to 1 PM today, our teams have worked tirelessly to match DNA samples. Earlier, FSL Director HP Sanghavi stated that DNA testing was essential for victim identification due to the extreme heat from the crash and subsequent fire, which rendered the traditional methods ineffective. On Saturday, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Rajnish Patel said, 'So far, 31 victims have been identified through DNA matching. Twelve bodies have been handed over to their respective family members. We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives.' Air India, in a post on X, announced an interim financial assistance package of Rs 25 lakh (approximately GBP 21,000) for the 'families of the deceased and to the survivor' of the tragic crash. In a post on X, the Tata-owned airline stated that the package was in addition to the Rs 1 crore support already announced by Tata Sons. The crash claimed 241 lives out of the 242 people onboard, which included 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
