Barry McGuigan calls for Katie Taylor blockbuster bout before retirement
Barry McGuigan hopes Katie Taylor will stay for one more mega-fight and take on Caroline Dubois after she competes in her trilogy bout against Amanda Serrano.
The Olympic gold medal winner turns 39 this summer, and although she has not hinted at retirement, time is certainly ticking on her illustrious career.
A win in Madison Square Garden this summer would certainly be a good time to exit stage left but Barry McGuigan hopes Taylor will stick around and face Dubois.
Dubois boasts an impressive 11-0-1 record and is the younger sister of World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Dubois.
And McGuigan hopes the fight will go ahead and that Dubois has a serious chance of winning.
Speaking to Betway, he said: "I think that's a fight we genuinely believe we can win as she is getting better, improving all the time and she's tremendously powerful for a 135lb fighter. We can maybe talk to Katie about doing a catchweight and have all of the titles (on the line) with Katie's belts at 140lbs and Caroline's WBC lightweight title.
"That would have to be a discussion that we agree with the various different councils, but it is a fight I believe Caroline would have a tremendous chance of winning. She's getting stronger and more confident, and she's incredibly quick and explosive. She is one the best female fighters when it comes to power and can switch her lights off. We have seen Caroline dropping men in the gym so she can hit really hard. The guys in the gym go f****** hell, she can really hit.
"I certainly hope she doesn't retire before she fights Caroline Dubois, but she is 39 years old. She has achieved incredible things for female boxing, Ireland and has been a great ambassador to professional boxing. I hope we can make the fight between Katie and Caroline after she has fought Amanda Serrano. "

Cynthia Erivo and The Vivienne among ‘LGBT+ changemakers' in 2025 Pride List
The Independent's Pride List for 2025 also includes retired Olympic diver Tom Daley, actor Bella Ramsey, artist David Hockney, comedian Joe Lycett and author Juno Dawson. Erivo, 38, who won a Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad) Award earlier in the year, was placed at number four on the top 10 list while The Vivienne, the drag alter-ego of the late James Lee Williams, is seventh. The Vivienne, who won the first series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and spoke publicly about prejudices faced by LGBT+ people and by the drag community, died in January at the age of 32 and is a posthumous inclusion on the list. Topping the 2025 Pride List is Victoria McCloud, a lawyer, former judge and transgender woman who announced she would take the Government to the European Court of Human Rights over the Supreme Court's ruling on the definition of a woman. Dr McCloud said: 'I'm delighted and honoured that The Independent has included me in its Pride List this year. 'In 2025, more than ever before, amidst increasing oppression and segregation at home, with court and state against us, people from the trans community yearn to be bathed in rainbow light. 'These are uniquely dark times but we will challenge those who wish to marginalise us, be they Government or activists with money and the odd mega-yacht to spare. ‘You're truly sick' – Simone Biles in transgender war of words with swimmer
Biles, the seven-time Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnast, called Gaines 'sick' and, as they then exchanged views on X, said: 'Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male'. That prompted condemnation of Biles from the British Olympic swimming medallist Sharron Davies. 'Not defending women's sport after you've had your career, thank you very much, pulling the drawbridge up after you, then comparing a woman to a man as an insult … I thought better of you,' she wrote. The row began after Gaines responded to a photograph of a post by the Minnesota State High School League which showed the Chaplin Park girls' team celebrating the State Championship. Gaines, who competed as a college athlete against the transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, then responded to the picture with the message: 'To be expected when your star player is a boy.' This prompted speculation beneath her post about which of the children was transgender. Biles wrote: 'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports. But instead... You bully them... One thing's for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around.' In a series of posts, Gaines replied: 'Simone Biles being a male-apologist at the expense of young girls' dreams? Didn't have that on my bingo card. So disappointing. My take is the least controversial take on the planet. 'It's not my job or the job of any woman to figure out how to include men in our spaces. You can uplift men stealing championships in women's sports with YOUR platform. Men don't belong in women's sports and I say that with my full chest.' Of the remark about her size: Gaines added: 'And the subtle hint at 'body-shaming' ???? Plzzzz I'm 5'5'.' Gaines had tied for fifth place with Thomas in the 200m freestyle swimming at the 2022 NCAA Championships before World Aquatics voted to change the rules and stop transgender athletes who had gone through male puberty from competing in women's races. Thomas has since failed with a legal challenge to change the rules. Gaines said she felt 'cheated, betrayed and violated' by competing against Thomas and was present at the White House in February when Donald Trump, the US president, signed an executive order excluding transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. In April, the UK Supreme Court ruled that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law. Since that ruling, a number of UK sporting bodies, including the Football Association and the England and Wales Cricket Board, have followed governing bodies such as World Aquatics, World Athletics and British Cycling in changing their rules to base the female category according to biological sex. Following the very public row between Biles and Gaines, tennis legend Martina Navratilova asked to speak personally with Biles. 'I would love to talk to you about this… pretty sure there is more to it than you know at this time…Respectfully, Martina,' she wrote.
