Israel to intensify Gaza bombing ‘without rest' until hostages are freed, warns their Army chief

Israel's top general has issued a stern warning that military operations in Gaza will intensify 'without rest' if ongoing negotiations fail to quickly secure the release of hostages held in the Palestinian territory. This comes against the backdrop of growing pressure, both internationally and domestically, including from many of the hostages' families to resume efforts to secure a ceasefire in the nearly 22-month conflict, AFP reported. Army chief of staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir conveyed that a critical juncture is approaching regarding the fate of the hostages. "I estimate that in the coming days we will know whether we can reach an agreement for the release of our hostages," said Zamir, according to a military statement, adding, "If not, the combat will continue without rest.' His remarks come as negotiations, mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar to secure a ceasefire, stalled last month, leading to calls within Israel for tougher military action. Footage released by the Israeli military showed Zamir meeting soldiers and officers in a command centre, the news agency reported. Of the 251 individuals abducted during Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, 49 are still believed to be in Gaza, while 27 of them are dead, according to the military. This crisis was amplified this week with the release of two videos by Palestinian armed groups which showed hostages looking emaciated and weak. Aid agencies have meanwhile warned that Gaza's population is facing a catastrophic famine, triggered by Israeli restrictions on aid. However, Zamir rejected these allegations of intentional starvation, the news report said. "The current campaign of false accusations of intentional starvation is a deliberate, timed, and deceitful attempt to accuse the IDF (military), a moral army, of war crimes," he stated, adding, "The ones responsible for the killing and suffering of the residents in the Gaza Strip is Hamas." The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides. Hamas's 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to data compiled byAFP. Since the group troops were sent to Gaza, a total of 898 Israeli soldiers have also been killed, according to the military. Israel's campaign in Gaza has killed at least 60,332 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory's health ministry, deemed reliable by the UN.

Turkey starts supplying Azerbaijani gas to boost Syria's power output

ISTANBUL: Turkey on Saturday turned on a supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria, whose infrastructure was ravaged by civil war, with annual deliveries expected to reach up to two billion cubic metres. Syria's Islamist authorities, who toppled Bashar al-Assad in December, are seeking to rebuild the battered country where power cuts can last for more than 20 hours a day. Speaking at a ceremony attended by Syria's energy minister, Azerbaijan's economy minister and the head of Qatar's development fund, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the initiative would help normalise Syria. "In the initial phase, up to two billion cubic metres of natural gas per year could be exported to Syria," Bayraktar said at the ceremony in the southern province of Kilis near the Syrian border. Damascus has said the gas would be used to generate electricity. "The gas will help activate a power plant with a capacity of around 1,200 megawatts, meeting the electricity needs of approximately five million households," Bayraktar said. "We will transport natural gas to Aleppo and from Aleppo to Homs. This will enable the power plants there to be put into operation in the near future," he added. A first phase of the Qatari scheme to fund gas supplies for power generation in Syria rolled out in March via Jordan and provided 400 megawatts of electricity per day.

'Enough To Keep Them Awake...': PM Modi's 'BrahMos' Warning To Pakistan In Varanasi

PM Modi said all BrahMos missiles will be built in UP, and warned that Pakistan would face a decisive response through India's indigenous weaponry in case of another terror act. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday issued a fierce warning to Pakistan after Operation Sindoor, saying any act of terror in the future would be met with a decisive response through India's indigenous weapons systems. After inaugurating several developmental projects in Varanasi, PM Modi said, 'During Operation Sindoor, the entire world witnessed the power of India's indigenous weaponry. Our air defence systems, indigenous missiles and drones have demonstrated the strength of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India)." 'In particular, our BrahMos missiles have instilled fear in every enemy of India. In Pakistan, even hearing the name 'BrahMos' is enough to keep them awake at night." PM Modi said all BrahMos missiles will be built in Uttar Pradesh, and manufacturing is being started in Lucknow. He further said several defence companies are setting up their plants in the state, and the weapons built in UP will bolster the strength of the Indian armed forces. 'If Pakistan dares to commit another sin, then the missiles made in UP will destroy the terrorists," the Prime Minister further said. PM Modi also fired a salvo at the Congress, saying the party and its allies were unable to accept the fact that India managed to destroy several terror camps in Pakistan. 'Many of Pakistan's air bases are still in the ICU. It's clear that Pakistan is upset, but Congress and the Samajwadi Party are unable to tolerate Pakistan's distress." 'When the masterminds of terrorism cry over there, Congress and SP leaders are shedding tears here after seeing the condition of the terrorists," he added. PM Modi inaugurated projects worth Rs 2,200 crore in Varanasi spanning multiple vital sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare, tourism, urban development, and cultural heritage. He dedicated the success of Operation Sindoor to Mahadev's blessing and said, 'The vow I had taken to avenge the sindoor of our daughters has been fulfilled — and it was only possible with the blessings of Mahadev. I dedicate the success of Operation Sindoor at his feet." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
